Title: Things we should know
Post by: The_Seeker on July 20, 2006, 08:50:21 AM
Due to some work in Congress, there may be some huge impacts on the very internet itself.  One of the issues is the extremely cryptic and enigmatic Net Neutrality.

But nobody explains it better than Senator Ted Stevens in this video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iMDRVzMfEM)

Now I understand what the internet is! So when it gets slower, it's because the tubes are clogged? Oh man that was funny!  *<:)

I swear if they try and ban/regulate online gambling you will see me naked infront of the white house burning a flag and protesting 'peacefully'.

As long as the senate doesn't mess with my life or my families life, I don't really care. I don't care about online gambling, and most of things will only effect me when I'm older so I don't care as long as I'm young andI enjoy it. :)zzz

the only gambling i do, is with my soul, i suppose.  ;)

but generally this is my attitude for life, but if they start and are successful with online gambling, how long before they start attempting to regulate other, aspects to internet freedom?

there are just some things one can not easily find in a small town...

They must control everything, don't they!" Oh no, there is still a place where people can do what they want and enjoy themselves! Quick! We must do something! " :gun:   :gun:  :gun:

two more years...and hopefully things will get better, but what happens when a world leader comes that does make it all, better?

Actually, you've all confused the message and the messenger  :|
The tube analogy he uses is a good one. The amount of internet traffic "flowing" along the "tubes" at any given time does cause it to slow. And an awful lot of the "stuff" in the "tubes" is cr*p -  porn, spam, junk, etc.

Here in Europe, one of the biggest annoyances on the internet is when America "wakes up" and goes online each day. As you (and US businesses etc) all log on and check your emails, the net slows dramatically.

That Senator in Alaska may not be able to speak techno-geek, but he is right nonetheless.

Theres still no right to ban online gambling.

I don't see that they will be able to, even if they wanted to. After all, you can take your credit card and purchase a bunch of pics and movies of little girls being raped and they don't seem to be able to ban that, so how are they gonna ban Tom and his Texas Hold 'em?

edit:that image was too large  :|

The poker sites will just go "off shore"  :-)

And thanks for the concern about our data transfer speeds. Perhaps you could all arrange it among yourselves to log on by state, alphabetically, at 30 min intervals?

devious may have a point...it'll all just go underground, they haven't yet been able to stop illegal downloading, i work in a movie theatre and my hacker brother in law sees movies that aren't even open to the public yet.   :|

We understand the message but if they ban one thing, they will ban much more and one day we will not be able to put on the net anything that is more or less politicaly correct or weird...so bye bye freedom of speech. Yes, there is alot of c**p on the web that may cause the systems to slow down. But they just have to be more severe in their punishments and keep on improving protection against spam, viruses, spyware etc...

As for porn and gambling, the consumer is resposable for his or her actions. No one puts a gun on their head!

but people expect the government to make it so they can't put the gun to their own head...

Off shore can be regulated by the country that shore is in, and I cant pay taxes. :-) Also, us poker people are not the most active bunch. We sit at home and hit a few buttons and make money. Once the US pulls the plug, there will only be 1 to 4 programs underground and with the numbers of people who play, you would never be able to log in.

If we did that, you guys would never see me.  :-D

Damn the government for not letting me put the gun to my head!

How are they going to stop it, exactly?? This is smoke without fire, trust me!

Simple. Shut it down or you will get fined. Pay the fine and we will send the SWAT Team to your house, shoot the server, burn the peices, and tell you to have a nice day.

Ooops! I forgot to mention something, when I was mentionning online gambling, I was thinking of compulsive gamblers. Because in my country, once they were talking about banning internet poker and all other online gambling because of people who were compulsive gamblers. Sorry! My mistake!

they don't do that for drugs, child pornography or a half dozen activities that are more criminally destructive...all it'll do is send people to casinos...maybe it's a conspiracy by casino lobbyists?

around here, canuk is usually reffering to canadians...he's definitly not their president.

i like the bumper sticker i've seen around town

"i voted for the other guy"

Maybe. I dont think this will pass (though it probably will) because the poker programs have enough money and support from the pros of poker to influence the other way.

Yup, me and the Canucks (Shadowling and Weirdelicious) definitely didn't vote Bush!

And when WW3 hits, I'll be waiting for the Big Guy on the white horse (and I don't mean Clint Eastwood)

depends on how much kick back the government gets...if they're not making any money, what's the point in keeping something, free?

It won't be a huge uber war, the US or some other allie will nuke the baddies into submission.
