Title: Dr. Who
Post by: Devious Viper on November 01, 2005, 08:46:53 PM
I thought this last season of "Dr. Who" was awesome. Dealt with some rather paranormal subjects, too, as well as being chock full o'monsters. I'd like to have seen Christopher Ecclestone stay in the role a while longer, but I guess we'll just have to get used to David Tennant instead. Waiting with baited breath for the Christmas Special... Any other fans out there? Or did you just loathe the whole thing?

I'm a big fan of Dr. Who.  I've greatly enjoyed the new season.  Likewise disappointed that Chris Eccleston didn't stay on beyond the single season.  Still, the story ideas for season two sound great and I'm looking forward to seeing Sarah Jane's appearance (along with K9).

I SOOO had a crush on Sarah Jane when I was a kid
I think that the first time I ever went to the flicks to see a movie was a Saturday matinee, to see a Dr. Who film (with Peter Cushing and Bernard Cribbins, I think. And daleks!)
Over the years, I can't really decide which has been my favourite of his foes... The ones from my very young days always seemed to be scarier - Sea Devils, for example.
Interesting how the Cybermen went Trans-Atlantic and became The Borg...
From the last season, one memorable moment - "The Empty Child"... For weeks afterwards, that quote ("Are you my mommy..?") was everywhere!
Well scripted, well produced, well acted, decent SFX. Great stuff.

What did you think of the one-off with (Paul?) McGann?

I liked the new series and I too was disappointed when eggleston quit

Favorite episodes were

End of the World
The Unquiet Dead
Dalek
Empty Child*
The Dr Dances*

Good 2 part above*
 Parting of Ways

The Paul McGann was OK, thats about it.... nowhere near as good as any of the series or the movies with cushing

i lost all interest in watching lost, when i saw the first episode...i loved it, and i'm not even into sci fi...but the actors did a fine job...the new doctor doesn't look like he'll be able to pull off the rogueish charm of ecclestian's dr. who, but my husband got his dalek fix, and is still a "tom baker is still the best doctor";constantly comparing the two...but he enjoyed it as much as i did...even if they made the new doctor a bit more, reckless than he felt a proper doctor should be.

i liked how they presented ghost situations as being extraterrestrial, it's a theory i've heard before, but never quite as enticing...any news on the release of the second season yet, i'll probably have to wait until sci fi gets done dealing for rights.  *pouts*

I remember seeing the Sea Devils.  It's been a while but I think they first appeared in a Jon Pertwee serial, then later on in a Peter Davison one if I'm not mistaken.

I really liked the Daleks and the Cybermen.  And of course, the Master, too.

i'll agree, we saw it last night...i still liked ecclestien for the doctor, this one is okay, but seems a bit more goofy looking to really pull of the charismatic bravado of the first season.

but he is younger...any one know the reasons why ecclestein couldn't do season two?

Eccleston listed the worry of being type cast and also said that he felt the shooting schedule was too rushed and hard to do.  So he departed at the end of the first season (or was it season 27?)

Tennant does seem as if he's going to be a more humorous Doctor.  I liked his first appearance and I'm looking forward to his return.

Okay, I know of the Dr. Who phenomenon but not very familiar with it.  He is a time changing, body changing, alien who flies around in an English phone booth.  How close is that?

It's currently strictly brittish, but apparantly the sci fi channel is working out a deal with bbc to carry it over here in america...

"Okay, I know of the Dr. Who phenomenon but not very familiar with it. He is a time changing, body changing, alien who flies around in an English phone booth. How close is that?"

actually it's more of a time/space travelling alien(timelord) that has a limited number of lives...so he does't really change bodies, when he dies he just sort of regenerates a new one...in the new series they have it completely devoid of any other timelords, with the new series there was some great war between them and the daleks...supposedly wiping out both races...leaving the dr. as the only one still in existance.

my husband finds it fascinating that it seems they only have two lives left for the good doctor, hoping that they may lead a series up to the master,(the final regeneration of the dr.)

...and apparantly not a very nice person...historically.

Technically I think the Doctor can die under certain circumstances.  The Peter Davison Doctor indicated this when he got poisoned.  He said to his companion Peri when she asked if he was going to die "I don't know.  I might regenerate.  It feels different this time..."

In the Paul McGann Fox movie pilot the Doctor (Sylvestor McCoy) got shot by a street gang.  He was taken to a hospital and they put him under.  He fought it and told them the anestetic might interfere with the regeneration process.  In the movie the Doctor apparently died on the operating table.  In the hospital morgue he regenerated into the McGann Doctor.  The was the only case in which the Doctor was actually pronounced dead and regenerated.  But was he really dead?  Being an alien Time Lord who really knows?

The Eccleston Doctor regenerates as well, telling Rose "We have a little trick to cheat death".  He has a great line in this episode.  "This is the last time you'll see me Rose.....the last time you'll see me like this".  This indicates that he doesn't actually die.  The regeneration process is apparently an instinctive one.  In many cases the Doctor was not conscious when he regenerates.  In fact, in the cases of Pertwee, Baker, Davison, (Colin) Baker, and McCoy he's out like a light when he regenerates.  Eccleston is one of the few Doctors who regenerates standing up and is full awake.

This season came out a couple weeks ago here in America for the Science Fiction channel, I must say that I am addicted to Doctor Who! I never thought I would even get into the franchise till I saw the commercials for it and I decided to give it a shot.

Me and my sister watch it every week on friday and we moan and groan during the credits because its over, we only have two more episodes left till the 9th Doctors carnation comes to an end, and what I've read about the other Doctor incarnations that I can relate to the 9th the best, bitter and sweet.

Ex-ter-mi-nate!

I do think that David Tennant  is a little to young looking to play the Doctor, all the others were older men and Davids... Well young looking which kind of makes me feel uneasy, I havn't seen him in action since I'm still on the first season of 2005.

Airs on BBC1 here, every Saturday, with a start time of anything between 6.35pm and 7pm (well, it is supposed to be a kids' program!) I'm an avid viewer, and everything stops in my house so that I can watch in peace. Even the phone gets taken off the hook. Tonight was episiode 7, "The Idiot's Lantern".

The previous 2 episodes were pretty nostalgic for me, featuring as they did the Cybermen (on whom, witha bit of Dalek, Star Trek's Borg are clearly modelled.)

I'm not entirely comfortable with Tennant yet, but that might be because I've seen him in so many other roles recently:
Cassanova, wotsit in Harry Potter, et al. Still, I watch for the plots, not the actors.

I'm eagerly awaiting the spin off, too ... "Torchwood"...

How old is Tennant now?  Peter Davison was 29 I think when he started playing the Doctor.  At the time he was the youngest actor to play the part.

Tennant is 35, but he just looks to young for me, or maybe I just don't like how he "looks" as the Doctor, but I can't just a book bye its cover, I'll just have to wait for the last two episodes to see the 9th Doctor die and see the 10th to come up. :-o

I mentioned in my previous post that I believed the Cybermen were the direct inspiration for the Borg (my fave Trekkie "monsters"); I spotted this on wiki:

Quote
The Cybermen can be seen as a slightly more individualistic forerunner of the Borg from Star Trek. Similarities include converting their victims into Cybermen (a process known as "cyber-conversion", although unlike the Borg there is no way to reverse the conversion) and the use of the catchphrase "Resistance is useless/futile" and promises or threats of assimilation, such as "You will become like us." ...The first episode that hints at the presence of the Borg ("The Neutral Zone", 1988) features, as a briefly glimpsed background detail, a computer screen which displays the names of the first six actors to play the Doctor; showing that at least some members of the production team were aware of Doctor Who. Coincidentally or not, the first on screen appearance of the Borg was in the episode "Q Who?" (1989).

we watch it with my brother in law over dinner on sunday nights, it's something the three of us can enjoy together...

i like tennet, i was unsure at first, he wasn't ecclestian...but he brings a certain character to the doctor, my husband likes that they seem to be clinging to the original concept of horror that he saw the first time he watched dr. who...i'm not too clear on who history, but i now know who he is.  :D

Your husband and I sound as though we have similar taste. The aspect of the last two series that has hooked me most is its return to the style of early British sci-fi/horror (eg The Quatermas Experiment {released in the US under the title The Crawling Horror I seem to recall} and Quatermas And The Pit.)

Coincidentally (or not - the producer and writers are all of my generation!), the last episode, The Wire, tipped its hat on several occasions to ...Experiment, and the current storyline is The Satan Pit (part 2 of 2; part 1 was entitled The Impossible Planet.)

I saw the last episode of season 1, 'twas great, too bad Jack got left behind. I laughed when the Dalek's eye stalk got shot and it yelled "MY VISION IS IMPAIRED, I CANNOT SEE!" Perhaps one of my favorite Who quotes ever. My sister seems to like the 10th Doctor, but I'm still not sure...

You are the eighth Doctor! Friendly and warm, you are the most human of all the Doctors. Your sense of style is a bit old-fashioned. You have a bit of trouble figuring out exactly who you are at first, but no worries. Eventually you'll find your way.

Might have to remove the picture?  :?

i missed the last half of the first part...i had other things to deal with, but fell in love with the second part...i suppose that's no suprise, but the thought there's something out there that the doctor can't explain...it sort of leaves hope for the universe.  ;)

the l.i.n.d.a episode was cute, i guess it shows that love can overcome any, obstacle.

I loved the soundtrack*;  the way that the main character was portrayed as geeky but in a genuinely affectionate way; the humour; Peter Kay (an incredibly funny comedian and it made a nice change to see him 'out of character'); and the way that it showed the script can stand not having the main characters once in a while. Oh, and loved the sly fellatio reference at the end

Billie Piper is leaving (see story HERE (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/5082668.stm) but not until the end of the season. In The Satan Pit, she was forewarned that she would die in battle... I guess she will be killed off, then.

I haven't liked her so much this season; she is too "in yer face" for a Dr's companion. (Natch, Sarah-Jane was/is my fave...)  Plus she really needs to sort out her eyebrows!! I can't watch her without staring at them. I keep expecting them to crawl off and hide behind her ears in the scarey moments. She is also a lousy actress. We joke here when watching it about which of her three expressions will be used the most in a given episode. And my final dig at her... In Wired she started the episode wearing 50s dress and a pair of groovy shades.... And all I could hear in my head was

One banana, two banana, three banana, four
Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more.
Over hill and highway the banana buggies go

Ref Billie Piper's replacement, the fansite reports:

From Outpost Gallifrey
Today's issue of The Sun states that "Former Crossroads stunner Freema Agyeman (http://static.sky.com/images/pictures/1417279.jpg) was last night revealed to be the front-runner to replace Billie Piper in Doctor Who. Freema, 26, will appear in the final two episodes of the BBC1 sci-fi's current series playing the character "Adeola". She joins the Timelord — played by David Tennant — and his sidekick Rose Tyler in battle against the dreaded Cybermen. Insiders say Freema, will join the Doctor in the Tardis full-time in the third series after her appearance in the episodes called Army Of Ghosts and Doomsday ... The highlight of Freema's career so far has been playing seductress Lola Wise in doomed ITV soap Crossroads in 2001. She said: 'I loved playing Lola. She was an 18-year-old girl with a lot of angst. She wanted to sleep with all the boys and have fun.' The Londoner, who left Middlesex University with a BA Honours degree in Performing Arts and Design, also appeared in TV shows Casualty, The Bill and Silent Witness. Last night a BBC source said: 'Freema is a fantastic actress. She is great in the final episode. And she is more than capable of stepping into Billie's shoes to play the Doctor's new cohort. No one knew Billie could act before we gave her the job [Viper says - We still don't know she can act!!] — and she has proved to be a sensation.' Freema, who also studied at Radford University in Virginia in America, could join the Timelord in new adventures that will see them meeting Shakespeare in the third series. Filming starts in just five weeks. ... Last night a BBC spokeswoman refused to confirm Freema was taking over from Billie as Dr Who's sidekick. Other names linked to the role include former EastEnder Michelle Ryan (http://cul.jschina.com.cn/gb/jschina/culture/node8119/node9194/images/00208822.jpg). She is believed to have auditioned with show bosses for the part."

The Daily Express has the next rumour - the paper reports that Nikki Sanderson (http://www.chinchat.net/TheCCLTeam/coronationst/nikki%20sanderson.jpg), who has appeared in Coronation Street, is in the running for the part. The Mirror, which has been running "Billie Quits" stories for 15 months, today takes her to task for telling "lies" about staying in the show ("Who's been a Silly Billie", "Looks like Billie's been giving Pinocchio a run for his money in the longnose stakes. Tut, tut.")  The paper also says that Piper has "stunned TV bosses" who "begged her to stay" but she "did not want to become typecast". (The Daily Star is also claiming an "exclusive" today that Billie Piper will leave Doctor Who at the end of Series Two, despite it being reported widely yesterday)

There is no word on whether any of these are in the show's plans for future episodes; however, several sources have told Outpost Gallifrey that, as noted yesterday, the departure of Billie Piper has been in the planning stages since last fall (so there would have been ample time for the show to replace Piper, if such an event is happening in the final episodes... though no word as yet on whether a new companion would be introduced this year or next.)

Seems Freema's the fave, but I'd like to see more of Michelle Ryan...

Freema Agyeman, I have never seen on TV. Her appearance in Dr Who in 2 weeks will be the first time for me.

Michelle Ryan is a well-known character actress here; she's got a good range. She's definitely the sultriest of the three

Nikki Sanderson is the prettiest easily; I've seen her acting many, many times and she is on a par with Ryan. She will, however, be the one carrying the most significant "typecast" curse, having appeared on our screens three nights a week since she was about 14 in the same role.

Ryan will be associated with her former role but she may just be able to pull off the transition the easiest.

I just got a Doctor Who DVD from the library with Tom Baker as the Doctor, it was great. Though it was a bit cheesy. I heard that ol' Tom is asking the people that run Doctor Who if he can come back as the latest reincarntion of the Master. Hmmm...  :?

It's a tough one on appearance... I like both michelle and Nikki. Ideally, if it wasn't such a terrible sin, I'd take Nikki as my wife, but keep Michelle on as my mistress.  Acting talent... I think Michelle Ryan would be the best for the part.
It seems pretty much in the bag that Agyeman will breeze it, though.

I agree with you there, she looks mature and would make a good companion

We will have to see who it will be???

Check this link Dr Who Confidential (http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/love-commentary.mp3) for an mp3 of Russel T. Davies, Phil Collinson and Susie Liggat discussing that "Love & Monsters" episode. It will open in Windows Media Player (well, it will if that's your default player - otherwise it will open in whatever you use  :-) )

"Fear Her"

I'm not going to post a spoiler, because if you're anything like me the temptation will be too great, hence spoiling it!  :-D

But I will post the synopsis...

"When the TARDIS lands in 2012, the Doctor plans to show Rose the London Olympics. But ordinary children are vanishing, seemingly into thin air, whilst a mother living in a seemingly ordinary British household is trying to hide her daughter's unnatural powers from the world. Why has the girl got drawings of the missing children on her bedroom walls? What's lurking in the cupboard? Can the Doctor defeat the evil nestled in the heart of London..?"

Incidentally, you guys over the pond that are seeing it on the US Sci Fi channel, are they showing "Dr Who Confidential" too? Awesome little programme, plays here straight after the main episode, gives a lot of insight and behind-the-scenes stuff.

Next Saturday is part 1 of the 2 part season finale... just saw a trailer - its gonna be good!!

well, we watched the episode of the little flower alien that possessed the girl and made her draw pictures snatching up, friends...and it looks like the next episode is the one that starts the end for rose...

some speculation?

is the blonde lady of torchwood under alien influence or just a crazy human?

I'm going to miss the show in 2009.  I know they're doing a few specials, but this was one series I always looked forward to watching.

Planet Of The Dead has already been shown here, it was a bit s**t IMO. Entertaining, but definitely not among the better episodes, it had no suspense whatsoever and some really awful lines. :(

I'm not a fan of the first two series of Torchwood at all (formulaic sci-fi bollocks IMO), but I'd recommend the s**t out of the Children Of Earth Torchwood mini-series. It built up mystery and suspense brilliantly.
