Title: luffys anime and manga talk
Post by: Lord Pisces luffy on June 11, 2006, 04:57:56 PM
Interesting enough I,ve come to love the Japanese culture.

First before I begin with my ramblings I must explain what a Manga and Anime are.

Manga--Traditional Right-to-left black ink graphic novel or "comic book" for better understanding.

Anime--Tradition Japanese cartoon very unlike american cartoons, refined animation.

I perfer the Manga over the anime for the reason animes in america are mostly what is called "dubbed"(dubbed meaning, parts taken out of show, changing names, words, characters themselves.  example someones ciggerate is turned into a loolipop)

Mostly I,ll be doing something like working out, studying, or just anything and I will stop just to read one which is odd for my age I believe.

I would like to know others who share my like as well.

Let us start out with Fullmetal Alchemist since it seems to be known here. The Anime(which i believe was not dubbed as horribly for the late time it comes on) seems to have ended and a movie is coming correct? how would that work out for the manga i wonder?  and does anyone know of when this movie is coming out?

That is correct. I dont think it works exactly with the Manga, but it will have similar questions and answers. The movie will be dubbed and come out in September of this year. I, personally, CANT WAIT.

I am 1/4 Japanese, and some people worship me for it.

I like anime/manga to an excetent, but I really hate it when they make Star Wars, Harry Potter, and other things into anime. It makes me angry.  :x

Generally, I don't have a problem with anime or manga, i just think they're silly.

Just please do me a favor and don't use it as any sort of reference for stuff discussed on this site. There have already been a couple of discussions in the mythology section in which someone confused the Japanese corruption of a myth (a type of dragon) for the proper myth. For example, if some one asked, "Who is Virgil?" and the reply was "Dante's half-brother" I would be inclined to become upset.

Over all I just think its dumb, but I'll be the first to admit I still enjoy some of the shows (Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Inuyasha). I just get bored with the plots so quickly that I can't ever get into the shows.

Cowboy Bebop is pretty awesome, but I believe the series was based off a crappy movie or video game.

Believe me man I keep these two things seperate. Those people annoy the hell out of me specially If your trying to get facts straight. This is also a reason I made this topic to discuss it here.

Been busy last night because I found a baby raccoon in my backyard near the woods, not sure what to do with yet or how to feed it, its so small......

I can,t put much up for anime on this but manga you read.  So I would say they could help readers who have a hard time reading?

Outlaw Star was great but was very short (1 season I believe?) Around the time Adult Swim finished the series they lost the rights to show it.  Inuyasha......I,d say it would be better off if they did not have all the filler episodes.  My girlfriend personally like Inuyasha but I think its way to long not to mention If you buy the manga, the manga series is 42? books long which means your spending over $400 dollars US money.

To Lord M:

I,ve never heard of a star wars manga or harry potter manga are they not here in the US yet?  I,ve heard of a Devil May Cry manga which is based off a game...

To Wolkos:

Why not post what its about and see if someone can identifiy it?

To Phantom:

What would the movie be about?  I did not see the last few episodes of Fullmetal.

GitS is pretty f-in awesome. The finale was great, in my opinion.

Basically, it will answer all the questions the last episode filled out. Would you like me to fill you in on what happened? Anyone else object?
(If only we had spoiler tags)

Yeah if you ever want to read it I suggest to read the manga, for the anime is badly done but not as bad as One Piece which was taken apart.

As far as anime goes, I own the full series of Cowboy Bebop (and the movie), Furi Kuri (FLCL), Trigun, Full Metal Alchemist (and the movie - Conquerers of Shambala), Serial Experiments: Lain, Haibane Renmei, Hellsing, Angelic Layer, Escaflowne, Neon Genesis: Evangelion, and a few others I don't quite remember.

For manga, I own Trigun, Hellsing, and Shutterbox.

I enjoy anime even though I rarely take it seriously.

Yes, we do have spoiler tags. Quest came up with the color code (thanks!)

A way of hiding spoilers:
[ color=#4D4D4D]Place text here.
Highlight the text to read the spoiler

Just don't place the spaces in with the quote  and color and it's brackets

It looks like this

Quote
The spoiler is in here.
Highlight the text to read the spoiler.

The text blends in with the background color of the quote box.

I love an anime with a good plot or at least makes you think a little.  Or sometimes you just need some simple nonsense humor to relieve yourself from a stressful moment.

FLCL was great.  At first, it seems like complete and utter nonsense and it is.  But usually in the end, there's a greater message.  It might be comforting or deep but it's always there and it can be a great message indeed.

Samurai Champloo is excellent.  A unique blend of a traditional Japanese journey with modern hip hop.  Complete opposites that seem to harmonize beautifully.  What truly amazes me is the extreme depth of characters that won't last more than a few episodes max.  Their compassion (or lack there of) is stunning as it shines through and the effect on the main characters is obvious, especially on Fuu.

Of course there are more I like and many more that I just can't really stand.  Some that can completely change your outlook on everything (even if for just a precious moment) and those that you just couldn't complain enough about.  And all of those with bad dubbings or translations don't exactly help (Speed Racer anyone?).

Amazing enough, it did it in six episodes, which I do not think, has ever been acomplished again.

Another great one was Trigun which it is still one of my favorites.

Edited to add: As i was typing this I was killed playing Space Station 13(a multiplayer online game) by a guy named Edward Elric waving a sword around screaming that he was a sith lord.

Last Episode of FMA:

Quote
Laws and Promises
The episode opens with Edward being impaled by Envy while Rosé and Alphonse look on helplessly. The scene then changes to just outside the Führer's estate where Riza is being taken to Central Headquarters to be interrogated about what's going on with Mustang. The car Riza is in crashes with an oncoming car driven by Archer. He exits the vehicle and sees Riza there in the car and opens fire on her. She is hit in the shoulder and she fires back. Meanwhile Mustang and Pride are fighting in the blazing wine cellar. Pride stabs Mustang's left shoulder with his sword, pinning him to the wall. Just as Pride is about to finish Mustang, Selim, Prides adopted Son, barges in. Selim reveals from his bag the "treasure," wrapped in cloth, and Pride chokes him in anger and throws him across the room. Mustang frees himself, finds the skull of Pride to be the "treasure", grasps it with his left hand, and draws a flame circle on the hand holding the skull using his own blood. Pride is held in place by the skull and repeatedly burned by Mustang.

Back in the underground city, Gluttony is feeding on Al. Alphonse uses alchemy to activate the stone, causing Gluttony's jaw to partially dissolve. Alphonse then moves over to Edward's body and states that Edward's soul is probably still at the gate. He then prepares a transmutation to heal Edward's body and reattach his soul. Six giant transmutation circles appear on the wall. Envy leaps toward Alphonse in a futile attempt to stop him. The transmutation carries both of them away.

Back at the estate, Mustang has reduced Pride to a pool of liquid (liquified Red Stones that Pride had consumed). He sets the liquid on fire and then drops the skull into the flames. Mustang takes Selim and leaves the building. Archer has just arrived to the mansion and aims his pistol at Mustang. Riza runs to the estate and sees Archer. She shoots him through the chest (which is still flesh and blood), killing him. She continues running to the building and sees Mustang collapsed on the porch in a pool of blood. She arrives there and calls out his name several times and begins to cry and scream in despair.

At the gate, Ed's soul briefly sees Alphonse's armor body appear and then disappear as the Philosopher's Stone is exhausted. Then Envy appears and meets Ed's soul at the gate. Ed reveals where the gate goes and that Hohenheim is still alive on the other side. Envy goes into the gate to kill Hohenheim, but the creatures inside the gate attack Envy and start to dissolve him. He gets them off of him by transforming into Ed. In his anger, he transforms again, first to his true form, and then to a giant serpent, which may be interpreted as either a Leviathan or a literal Ouroborus. The gate closes and Edward's soul departs the area of the gate.

Ed reawakens in the underground city, with Rosé trying to wake him. His body is healed, and he has all of his limbs. Dante, meanwhile, flees to the surface in the elevator to Pride's office. She expects to find him there and plans to have him go down to the underground city to kill Ed. Suddenly, a mindless Gluttony breaks into the elevator by chewing through the floor. Dante attempts a transmutation to defend herself, but when the elevator reaches Pride's office, it opens with no one inside. Ed asks Rosé to return to the surface with the now-helpless Wrath, and then begins a transmutation with the aim of pulling Alphonse's body and soul from the gate by sacrificing himself.

The episode then moves forward several months and Scieszka, writing a letter to Winry, narrates, summarizing what has happened since. Since the death of Führer Bradley, Lt. Colonel Armstrong and the General who commanded the Eastern Headquarters organize a ceasefire. They jointly organize the handover of political power from the military to a National Assembly. Roy Mustang has lost his left eye and is in bed, slowly recovering from his injuries. Riza is taking care of him, as always. Riza blames herself for not arriving in time to protect Mustang, but Mustang tells her that nothing is perfect, not even the world, but that is why it is beautiful.
Alphonse Elric, restored to his original body.
The Ishbalans have been allowed to return to their city and rebuild it. Alphonse is shown to now be alive. He has returned as a ten-year-old boy with no memories beyond the day he and Edward transmuted their mother. Izumi, Pinako, Winry, Scieszka, Rosé and her child, and others meet at Pinako's house, where Alphonse is staying. Izumi attempts to explain to Pinako how Alphonse could come back in terms of Equivalent Exchange. Pinako tells Izumi that she and Winry constructed automail limbs (originally intended for Edward) for Wrath, but that Wrath has run away. Later, during dinner, Alphonse asks that Izumi train him in Alchemy again so that he can find Ed. Alphonse leaves by train with Izumi and says goodbye to Winry, Rosé, and Pinako.

The scene then shifts to our Earth. It is now 1921 in Munich. Hohenheim is working with an occult organization known as the Thule Society in an effort to reach Amestris/Shamballa. In reality, Hohenheim is working with the group in an effort to find a way to return Edward to his world. Ed has reconciled with his father and has been living with him. Ed's body is missing an arm (and probably a leg too), which he has replaced with prosthetics, since automail does not exist in our world. Edward is studying rocketry in an attempt to get home. He is about to leave for Transylvania (modern-day Romania) to work on rockets with Hermann Oberth, to reach space, in an attempt to return to his world and Alphonse. He and Hohenheim discuss Equivalent Exchange and how it relates to his attempt to restore Alphonse. Hohenheim offers the idea that their Equivalent Exchange was their journey and the four years of hard work that they put into restoring themselves.

We see Edward and Alphonse in different worlds on different trains. Alphonse narrates a montage sequence revisiting many characters. These include Tucker, still trying to bring back Nina; the Ishbalans, rebuilding; Mustang and Hawkeye, shopping at a market; Wrath, lying on the ground under a tree; Gracia and Elysia Hughes, with Scieszka, laying flowers at Hughes's grave; Pinako, with Rosé and her baby, at their house; Russell and Fletcher Tringham, working in a lab; Winry, working with Dominick and Paninya in Rush Valley; and finally Armstrong and Breda, entertaining a group of soldiers that includes Fuery, Falman, and Havoc. Al explains that while he and Ed used to think that Equivalent Exchange was a fixed law that could explain anything in the world, they no longer believe this to be the case. The world is too complex and imperfect for one law to ever explain everything. But in spite of that, they still believe in Equivalent Exchange in a slightly different sense: that no one can gain anything without giving something of themselves, and conversely that anyone who works toward something will be rewarded, even if it's not in the way that they expected. Al says that he no longer thinks of Equivalent Exchange as a law of the world, but rather as a promise between himself and Ed that they will someday find each other again. The series concludes with Edward and Alphonse reaching out to the sky towards one another.

I always bring this up to my friends who watch anime: what is the obsession with amnesia? Why is there always at least two or three characters who have it? Big O, Trigun, Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, etc. all have some level of amnesia. It always bugged me because I felt it was a cheap plot device. your thoughts?

Amnesia Thing:

First off, I want to point out that Big O played the amnesia thing brilliantly. But to the Japan, anime can be compared to our soap operas. And in any and all soap operas, they have someone with amnesia (A few months ago on General Hospital, Jason had one but fully recovered from it.) pop up. If played correctly, it can lead to a good story line.

Though it kinda annoys me how amnesia is played in the media.  I don't think I've seen single movie/show/comic/book/whatever that portrayed amnesia as it really is.

Kind of, I think Japan should make characters that look more like themselves. (If you havn't noticed they like to make their cartoons and comics more of a forgein topic. Like Knights and Pirates.) Naruto is good because it actually feels like it fits the culture.

I think LPl meant the re-showing of Anime here is very different.  And yes, that's extremely true.  Looking at some bad dubs like (the worst I can think of here) Groove Adventure Rave (here known as Rave Master).  There are just so many errors that actually kill some of the original plot.

And M Sidhe, there's other anime than the ones they show on Cartoon Network.  Try popping into a store, you'll find there's a huge variety of anime and manga.

The worst dub ever made in America as of now is "Dub Piece" (One Piece)

Of course what do you expect from 4kids..... :x

They skip over 30+ episodes

Replaced all music with rap and other crap that does not give the same emotional as the original

Did not do the Little Garden Arc for they were in a hurry to the Alabasta Arc and the made a rather large plothole in the story.

Rather stupid named changes

Ace is now Trace

Whiskey peak is now Misty peak

Many attack moves had name changes

Some Devil Fruit had name changes (ha, Tweet Tweet fruit)

No blood except for the times 4kids gets slopy

changed all beer and wine to root beer or water or juice!

Sanji who smokes constantly had his cig turned into a tootsie roll pop

Any deaths have been rewritten completey instead of a person being killed in a important way they are instead thrown in the dungeon

rewritten most of the dialouge with bad american puns

smoker was changed to chaser

lougetown was changed to rougetown

turned a whale into an iceberg(which by the way, that whale was an Arc in the story 4kids skiped)

Took at ALL religious references (Zoro tied to a cross....Swatska)

Quote
The famous impalement of luffy by crocodile was completely redone to show him just gravity defying hanging in the air.

Quote
Many people are wondering if they would dare to even show an edited Skypeia Arc for theres no way to get around so many relgious references, Up in a cloud, everyone dressed as angels, more wondering how they are going to explain why the four priests murder people and God killing people from above....of course Luffy finds out the so called God really just ate the Thunder Thunder fruit and sinces rubber can,t be beaten be electricity beats the crap outta of him in the end.  Wondering how they are going to show this if they do show it at all.

My personal favorites when it comes to anime are Outlaw Star, Yoroiden Samurai Troopers, Full Metal Alchemist, Gundam Wing, Yu Yu Hakusho, G Gundam and the list could go on. I like most anime. I'm not a huge fan of Inuyasha or other anime/manga that go on FOREVER, but I like most others. When it comes to manga, I'm pickier. I like action and gore (W00t! for Hellsing), and I don't like manga that I have to buy 20 or so volumes to get to the ending unless it's REALLY good.

Quote

Um...I know this was posted a long time, but I think there was some type of spin off from Outlaw Star, but I think it was a show about a bunch of girls. I'm pretty sure that it was fan service most of the time. I could be wrong.

(And you can call me what you want, I'm an all out anime/manga fan.)

Does anyone else get angry at the way some anime has been dubed to be more "americanized"?

It's annoying. I hate when they redo an anime and then when it comes out on dvd, you find out you missed something, because they 'just didn't want to have that person say it'. The really old anime Ronin Warriors or Yoroiden Samurai Troopers is a good example. There's an entire scene explaining where the boys come from that was changed in the American version. :P

............. this was such a great topic...... too bad i missed it.

Me, too, Raz. Me, too.

Plus have you ever gotten your hands on Anime's that just have closed captions, or whatever they're called, in them? They aren't altered in any way, they aren't in English, but they make up for it by not being dubbed. I heard that even Pokemon has been altered. they supposedly have tons of gore in it!!! Dead annoying Pokemon!!! Whooot!!! :-D
