Title: Masochist Bird?
Post by: Alayla on April 13, 2009, 02:20:06 PM
A bird has been flying into my window for over a month now - just banging on the glass. First, it started in the front of the house, but later, when I was in my room, I heard it, and looked over to see it flying repetetively into my window in my bedroom. It doesn't fly into any other windows except the window in my bedroom and the window in the front of the house near the kitchen. When I am in my room, it will bang on the window there, and when I am in the front of the house, it will fly to the kitchen window.

It doesn't seem to want anything other than to bang on my window because when I opened it, the bird wouldn't come back and fly into my room. I left an offering for it the other day (a crust of my peanut butter sandwitch :] ), and it ignored it. It simply flew into my window and chirped at me - I doubt it didn't see it, as it perched on the window sill next to it, but it ignored it.

My sister came in, saw the bird and told me I just had to scare it away. I told her it wouldn't work, but she walked across the room and tapped on the window until it flew away. "See, that's how you do it," she told me, and left, but as soon as she was out of the door, the bird was back. It seems to only want to be around me. My family thinks nothing of it - just that it's funny, I think it's funny as well, but there's got to be something else. This isn't the most urgent request for help, but I'd like to know what my bird friend wants. Any ideas?

Just one question: What kind of bird is it?

I think he may have to look that up.

In the mean time here is a suggestion, look for openings in your eaves and find out if one is blocked or two. They can be stubborn about a good spot to nest. Or look for something out place in your life, or something that needs attention. something you would'nt have noticed off hand. It could be a spirit guide sending the bird for those reasons.

Or it could just be a stubborn bird, thinking it can get to its nesting spot it from that way. And was leery of doing it with open invitation.

I think it is a cardinal, but I can't be sure because it is a female and the coloring isn't as prominent as it would be on a male.

The nesting situation would make sense, but I have opened the window, and the bird has just flown away and not bothered coming into my room.

It sounds like it is trying to find a place to nest.

A quick thought here.  Has anyone close to you died recently?  Dosen't have to be family, just someone you knew, someone whom you made an impact with.

Actually, yes - A girl at my school named Sarah - she was a year older than me and I didn't really know her that well, but I am on the newspaper staff and she is on yearbook and our tasks sometimes mingle - also she was on my sister's tennis team, but i believe that the bird started flying into the window before her death - she died in a car accident one or two weeks ago.

I don't really think the two events are related though. Also, the bird hasn't been bothering me for a few days now... I'm actually starting to miss her.

Must have found another spot to nest.

certain times of the season birds get territorial, i had an  issue with a blue bird attacking my window and looked it up on line, as long as there's a nest and a mate it'll perceive it's reflection as an intruder, some bird breeds are more aggressive.

put up something in your window to break up the reflection, out of site, out of territory, there's not much else you can do.

Or maybe it finally got through its little birdie brain that repeatedly flying into a window is accomplishing nothing.

I thought it was strange that it only seemed to be attracted to me. It came around when I was around, and it ignored any expiriments; ie. opening window, putting out food. It would go either to the front of the house or to the window in my room, but either depends on if I was there or not. My window has a light, see-through blue curtain over it, and a blue glass cross, also.

you've never been in a mating mood, have you?

if you really insists it's something spiritually special to you;  look into what the bird symbolizes, see how it applies to your life and figure out the message it's trying to deliver...it's not brain surgery.

how do you know if it's knocking against a window if you're not there?

A very valid point.  A camcorder or similar device would get an answer to that question.  Just pick a time of day that it usually visits ( if such a time exsist ) and set up 25 min or so prior.  Then walk away for about 2 hours.  Come back, rewind, then watch on FF.  Should give you dencent results.

I don't know if it knocks on the window when I am not there, but I do know it knocks on one of two specific windows in the house depending on where I am in the house.

Cardinals tend to like to nest towards trees or bushes that are close to houses or buildings. We had a couple in our kitchen window for the longest of time but they were so sweet and kept to themselves and would eat the berries from the tree. It was sad because we had to cut the bush down because it was growing into our house and damaging it (I would have rather kept looking at the bush with the cardinals then the lousy weird neighbors that only come out at night and are loud). Another cardinal couple lives in a tree near my work at school and will go to a near bush that has berries. A question would be is there a berry bush of some sort or a bird feeder close by. Cardinals are very nice creatures and get along with humans pretty well. Its that time of year where cardinals start nesting. You can tell if its a girl cardinal if it has the rising head ridge like the boy cardinals and they make a certain sound that only cardinals make (kind of like a squeek noise that you can make on a hand held bird caller which looks kind of like a whistle).

I would be surprized if it was a deceased loved one though. I feel like I had that experience with the great grandfather (except it was a cowbird which are pretty but not pleasent). But I would go with my first idea first. I would just not feed it and just leave it alone. It probably is mad at you for some reason maybe you scared it or something one day because birds are really smart and hold grudges for a long time (reminds me of my parakeet named stupid gosh that bird is nuts).

*shrug* Maybe - that does sound like a reasonable explanation. Are birds really that smart to hold grudges like that? She left me for a while and I actually started to miss her... but after a week or so she came back.

Then there would be bird poop in the house.

Already tried that - my bird friend just flies away to the fence post or something and chirps at me, but ignores the window.

At this point I think just living with it would be the best option.

I don't really mind it - I even missed it when it went away for about a week. I was just curious if it could be anything I needed to look into. I don't really mind her banging on my window, though I'm not sure if it's good for her health to continue.

Not so.  We have alligators and crocodilians.  Also sharks, though not dino's, have been around for just as long.  Sorry to interupt.   :focus:

Point taken Angelus, but I think we are getting slightly off topic here.  If you want to talk about nessi ( which I do also ) please start us a new thread in crypto, now  :focus:  I look forward to your new thread.
