Title: Military Interview
Post by: Ryobi on July 09, 2009, 05:47:51 PM
Okay so, I don't know if in the US you guys have the same thing but over here ADF runs a gap year for 600 kids over the 3 forces. They got 7000 applicants this year, I was one of them. What the gap year does is introduce us to the different jobs available within a specific force aka, Navy, Airforce and Army. I'm going for the Navy because unlike the other 2 you actually get to have a go and gain experience in every single job offered by the navy to people with basic credentials (Yr 12 Cert.). They also pay $40 000 over the 12 months to each person taking the gap year.

Now I'm up to the 3rd stage, if I pass my psych. evaluation, medical, fitness test and interview and do better than what? 6400 applicants then I get $40 000 and may be earning a 6 figure salary by the time I'm 24. Which is more than my parents have possibly ever earned or had in the bank ever...

Anyone got any tips on how to get fitter, healthier and how to pass a god damn interview. Or some info on army/navy lifestyle? (logically this would be similar for most defence forces).

This is in a possible 3 WEEKS and decides the majority of my future so it is an emergency. To me at least.

Easiest way to get ready physically is do get ready for the USMC boot camp.  No offense to any other service members but we do have the longest physical training tests.  Try to get up to 20 pull-ups with no time limit without getting off the bar or whatever you choose to use,  100 crunches in 2 mintues, and try to shoot for an 18 min 3-mile run.  Not many people can do the 18 minute 3-mile run but average is around a 20 minute and 24 minute 3-mile.  As far as a psych. eval just don't tell any deep dark secrets or thoughts, keep it "Normal" and you should pass it.  Medically, tell them no more than 3 of your worst allergies, only 2 attempts at any illegal drugs and don't say anything about any minor broken bones fractures or sugeries.  If it was serious don't tell any more that 3 surgeries.

YES= Your Enlistment Stops  NO= Navy Opportunities.

At least thats what I was told. I agree with Syris. I think the Marines have the best physical fitness program. Hell, we even send some of our squids over to train with marines. Mostly the medical people. You have to be able to keep up with them to treat them.  :-)

Before you make any big decisions with your money make sure you get it in writing. I can only think of 3 programs where you would be able to get that much pay coming in. Seabee's, Doctor, or (whimpy, whiny) Sea Cadet Program. Are you going for Officer are Enlisted when you go?

The psych eval is not all its blown up to be. You sit in a room with a guy who will pretend that he is your long lost grandpa, and he will ask you a couple of questions - like if you have ever tried to hurt yourself or thought about it. Are you depressed often? This is how they weed out the friendly firing crazy's.  For the med eval its  turn your head and cough, walk like a chicken in your underwear, and have someone grope your legs and back to make sure you are "nice and strong." Much like is done with horses.  The interview is not a big deal but means the most if you've ever had any trouble with the law.  Just go in be respectful, professional, and motivated. No biggy. Hope this helps.

Get running. Run run run run run.

Next thing is to get a long handled broom

and stuff it up yer ass till the brush end touches your cheeks.

This will do two things.

1) Improve your posture no end, which they will love in an interview
2) get you used to the feeling of being the butt of someone elses orders/jokes/neurosis/bad day/bad ideas/idea of foreplay

It is the Navy you are interested in after all!!!!!!!!!!!

Ask for help sooner so that you have more time to put said help to good use.

Get off of this site, and concentrate on your physical fitness.

Remember that everyone is doing electronic background checks now, so your membership here may be found out. If that's something you don't want them to know about, I suggest that you do something about it now.

This plus everyone else's suggestions should help... well, except maybe OldBill's tongue-in-cheek suggestion of using a broomstick....

Good luck!!!!

  For the Physical part, follow Syris's advice.  Pretty much you will need to push yourself every day till you drop, then do it some more.  I would also like to add that you need to start swimming along with running as that is something the squids in the US have to do also, you will after all be surrounded water, breath exercises will come in handy also.

  Psch eval, you have nothing to worry about really, just give them the answers they want to hear, not what you want to say.  That's the easiest way to pass any psch eval, and I have been through a few of em over my career.  You will do fine Ryobi, the biggest thing I think you should worry about is the physical portion, that and the 6999 other applicants.

Thankyou Miyako, I shall think about that...

Okay, the physical fitness level you need to get into the australian navy is;

- do a beep test and get a score greater than 6.1

the physical fitness level required for australian army is;

- do a beep test and get a score greater than 6.5
- 8 pushups
- 40 situps
- 12 minute 2k run (or something similar)

I guess those requirements would go up because many people are going to beat them into the ground. So I will run every day, walk or ride everywhere, start swimming again (there was once a time were I could do 140m without breathing, I'd like to be able to do that again) and practice my pushups and situps.

Will try to eat more bananas and milk etc and get my serotonine levels higher, go for more sessions and if I work really hard, maybe I'll be able to say to that psyche, well I do have ocd however it only affects a small amount of the things I do. How badly is having a condition going to affect my chances? I don't want to outright lie if a question comes up because chances are they'll find out later.

Wolfsong, AUD being a weaker currency than USD, the money i'll be getting is more like $31 150, which is only $600 a week, wow, okay... maybe I didn't do that correctly... yes I will get that checked out. That's seems a strange rate to be paying 600 gap year kids, for a year, in the middle of a recession.

Moloch, I doubt they would do such a deep background check while they have 6999 other applicants to process. All they get is the info ASIS has to offer. I've never been in trouble with the law. Alright, so you guys may not see me as often for a while, if I end up getting this thing, probably won't see me for the next year, but I will be back.

What things should I be promoting in the interview, honesty? ability to adapt to many conditions? practical mind? logical mind? fast thinking? I need a fool proof profile from men with much more experience handling with this kind of situation.

  In the interview, honesty is fine, as long as you have nothing to hide, but don't be too eager to show how smart you really are.  They want soldiers/seamen who can follow orders, not ones who will likely question them.  Just be professional and answer their questions.

Because at the time I was freaking out about a situation that could possibly decide my future. In fact, I'm still freaking out a little about it, do you have any suggestions as to how I could improve my chances of passing this military assessment?
