AND, Calif. -- A Davis man caught stealing hundreds of human body parts from the University of California, Davis, and then dumping them into the trash faced his punishment Monday.

On Monday morning, with his wife sobbing, David Beale -- an admitted "mad scientist," according to court records -- was sentenced to two years and eight months in state prison.

Beale is a former Yolo County and UC Davis autopsy technician who stole more 157 pounds of human bones from autopsies over an 18-year period.

Ever since those bones were discovered in a Davis trash bin, Beale has offered all kinds of explanations for why he did it. In court records, he blamed mental incompetence, calling himself a "mad scientist" who wanted the bones for witchcraft and sorcery. He even told friends a ghost haunted him in the autopsy lab, according to the records.

"Now, that ghost has followed him to my apartment. I swear," said Steve Roland, Beale's friend.

Under oak in court Monday, Roland tried to substantiate Beale's claims, saying that the same ghost that haunted Beale is now haunting his home games of solitaire.

"I play solitaire at home a lot. I live alone, and I'm old, and I don't have anything else to do. The ghost took to stealing the 4 of Diamonds out of my deck," Roland said.

In the end, Woodland Judge Michael Sweet didn't buy the explanation and handed down the sentence.

Prosecutor James Clark said he was just "happy we could put this case to rest. Justice was done."
