Platinum Dunes producing partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form told SCI FI Wire that their upcoming reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street is moving fast into production, expected to commence in about 12 weeks in Chicago, and that they are currently looking for a director, though likely not one with whom they've worked before.
The screenplay by Wesley Strick has been rewritten by Eric Heisserer (whose Inhuman is in development), and the story will track Wes Craven's 1984 original. "It's a little bit of the same story, but, you know, we always end up going off into our own kind of weird world, and this will be the same," Fuller said in an interview on Saturday in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting Friday the 13th.
Fuller added: "[Heisserer's] done a fantastic job. And we're out to directors, and hopefully we land our director in the next week or so."
The producers say they are seeking a director who is a visual stylist and likely not someone the duo have worked with before on such reboot films as The Hitcher or the upcoming Friday the 13th.
As for casting, the duo said that the original Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund, has said he doesn't want to be in the movie, but that other high-level actors have been calling about playing the iconic character with the razor-fingered gloves.
"We have received some very encouraging incoming calls for the role of Freddy," Fuller said. "I mean, real, real high-level actors," both American and British. "I think we'll be able to land a real thespian in that role," he added.
An A-list actor?
"It's not a requirement," Form said. "It's just nice that we have interest at that level."

I recently purchased, cheaply, the complete 'Nightmare on Elm Street Collection'. While I'm up for another sequel, it has to be intelligent and NEW. So many of these movies have just gotten stupid, regurgitating old ideas, knowing they'll get an audience just because Freddy or Jason is in the film. "Hey! Let's put Jason in outer space! What a great idea!".
The thing about Freddy that's kinda cool is that he's become "interdimensional", not just in terms of dreams, but in spilling over into other realities (such as 'New Nightmare', 'Freddy VS Jason' and the comic book series 'Freddy VS Jason VS Ash'). He's getting more powerful and expanding his powers and influence with each new movie or tie-in.
I haven't seen the new 'Friday the 13th' remake, will probably wait for DVD.
Now... If I could just find a very cheap collection of the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' television show. Remember that? There was a 'Friday the 13th' TV series too, but it wasn't quite as good, IMO.

I also wish they would come out with "Freddie's Nightmares" on DVD. It's been a long time since I've seen that show.

Quest, Freddy's Nightmares is on Chiller Network. As for the remake, making Elm Street without Robert Englund is like remaking Silence of the Lambs without Anthony Hopkins, absolutely ridiculous. Englund brought that character to life in a way no one will be able to replicate. Remaking & recasting the Jason movies is easy since Jason is pretty much a blank slate no personality; but only Englund can bring Freddy to life & if he says he is dead then Freddy is really & truly dead.

How dare you?! I mean, sure, he wasn't actually even in the first movie, and then he covered his face with a burlap sack, and then a hockey mask, and he never talks, but...

I haven't watched the Chiller Channel is a while. I'll have to check it out and see if I can catch a few episodes.

I can't wait!!! As far as classics go, I've always like Friday the 13th better than A Nightmare on Elm Street, but I wasn't all that impressed with the remake, but maybe the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street will surpass my expectations. :D
