The Thing is an upcoming (possibly October, from what I hear now, although originally slated for April) movie directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and written by Eric Heisserer. It is a prequel to the John Carpenter awesomeness that is
The Thing (1982), and concerns a Norwegian scientific team who first discover - 3 days before the events of Carpenter's movie - the alien vessel in the ice and unleash its bio-mimic occupant. It is being pitched as a "tribute" to Carpenter's original, rather than a remake, although for pretty obvious reasons (we even know already how it will end!) don't expect a great deal of difference between the two.
Probably worth a watch just to see how they can capture the atmosphere of the original - one of the finest sci-fi horrors ever made. I'm intrigued to see how they depict the shape-shifting creature - as they have said they will - in its original, natural form. Probably a good popcorn movie.
Universal have kept it under tight wraps and there is currently only a very poor quality bootleg of trailer footage doing the rounds. But just to get you in the mood, here's where the original starts (and thus the prequel ends)
