Anybody got advice for writing down our dreams? I know that when we talk about them in here that it's important to type up as much detail as possible.

So does anybody have any advice?

I as cuz I have a half formed hypothesis that the physical act of trying to find the right words to describe it all, & either writing them down, or typing them up, has an effect on our minds that helps us order things & brings it all up from the subconscious mind & into the "light" of our conscious thinking processes.

Wow, I hate it when I sound smart or use big words. >.<

I kind of agree with you here.
Its a bit like focussing our awareness getting it ready for it to cross over into......

Do you actually keep a dream journal?

Regina Terra

Nope, I can never remember enough about my dreams to write anything down. There have been a couple exceptions lately, but I got those typed up before I could forget them.

I used to keep a dream journal. I started it because I was trying to remember repressed memories.

I would meditate for about a half an hour before going to sleep to keep myself relaxed. I kept the notebook right by my bed so I could write down my dreams as soon as I woke up, when my memory was still fresh. I stopped I got very close to remembering those memories, just a feeling, not because they came back to me. It started really freaking me out and giving me anxiety. I figured I didn't really want to have those memories back after all.

How about having the memories but without the anxiety?
That should be easy enough to organise.

I tried hat last night!!! I even dreamed, & I had the journal right under my pillow with a pen & everything. BUT I STILL FORGOT IT ALL before I could write it down. >.<

I'm so pissed right now.

Would it work any better for you to instead write down how you're feeling when you wake up instead of trying to recall specific events? Maybe if you try to write the feelings down first, the events will come after.

Regina Terra

Huh, good idea. I'll try that. Thanks!!! :-D

i only write down my dreams when something really good or bad happens. I have to to keep from forgetting. usually thinking about my feelings usually does help me remember my dreams. I think it is good advice.
Insanity is a fun state of mind. I can amuse myself and have my friends wanting to get me a straight jacket and a padded room.

Recently Ive been writing down my dreams in a journal I keep by the side of my bed.
I've found that even after a few goes I am remembering more and more of my dreaming.
Even if I dont remember everything as soon as I have woken up, they start to come back to me during the day.

Just by sticking to the simple technique of writing in it everyday I have quadrupled the number of dreams I am remembering. Thats after a week!

I do have a small but potentially useful piece of advice for those wanting to keep a dream journal, write their dreams down, but are having difficulty remembering them.

The fact that you really do "want to remember them" and "write them down" on some level already means that you are remembering them, if only unconconciously, and realise their importance to the extent that you want to write them down.

When I was writing my dreams down, before I had the type of automatic total recall of them that I have now, I did experience some difficulties at the beginning, This was usually because I would try and write the dream down in linear time order, the start of the dream into the middle of the dream and then to the end of the dream. I soon found it much easier to write them down in point form, starting from the end of the dream, the "last thing" in the dream that I remembered and then work my way backward in time, in point form back to the start of the dream. I would then later reconstruct the dream in real time order going from point to point forward in time. Often I would recall details of the dream that I had completely missed duing this "reconstruction" phase. Thoughts like "Oh!! Thats right, now I remember! This happened after this before that happened" I found that my mind would automatically recall so many details during this reconstructiuon period.

So if I were you, as soon as I woke up, I would instantly write down the last thing I remember happening in the dream, quickly going backwards in time with the major "points" or "events" in the dream and then later go through them in reverse, writing the "story" of the dream down from the start going forwards in time until the end. This should open up a whole stack of dream memories that you did not even realise you remembered.

Try it and let me know how you are going!

All the Best!

Thanks!

That's great Regina! Are you trying to recall something specific or just testing out your theory?

I think your theory is pretty right on. I haven't written down dreams for a long time, but do remember that when I was dreaming it wasn't all actual events and I had to also take the time to try and interpret what they meant. Even then, it did work and what I was trying to remember started to come back to me. That's when I quit.

Regina Terra

A little bit of everything, I am mainly starting a dream journal to help myself remember my dreams, also, I want to start Lucid dreaming as well, & everyone says the place to start is a dream journal.
