Vlad the Impaler was Vlad Dracul. His father was a Dracul as well, which was actually just a special army, sort of like our Delta Force today in America. The ring he gave his son was just the symbol of that station, and it could be passed from father to son. Vlad was no more barbaric in his day than any other ruler, he was just much more efficient in his barbarism than they were and this terrified them all.
