Title: Posthumans
Post by: KubeSix on July 30, 2009, 03:26:15 PM
I felt like discussing the topic :) I was reading about how different people thought posthumanity would be... To those who don't know what posthuman means... and aren't too talented in the domain of basic etymology... posthumanity would be a part of our history when, in a distant future, we'd have evolved so much that we don't fit the 'human' criteria anymore. Here' a couple theories I've heard about:

- When humans are born, their consciousness, so to speak, are transplanted to a different, cybernetic body. Stuff like enhanced senses, temperature-regulating skin, etc.

- When humans are born, every single one of their neurons are replaced by highly advanced micro-processors. Imagine having billions of supercomputers instead of a single brain! :O

- We've just evolved organically and don't fit humanity's criteria. (Not likely, since because of technology, our evolution has been halted, or so many scientists think...)

- One I've thought of myself, [insert pride here], is we've evolved to a higher state of mind, making our bodies useless. Basically, we'd be those god-like, ethereal, beings who can manipulate their environment as they wish...

- Others think we might get so advanced that we can hack reality... Wake up, Neo.

- Also, what about vampires, etc. being the next step in evolution? :D

Let's hear your theories, monsters! How are we gonna be like in a couple hundred thousand years?

Those are some interesting theorys.

I wonder if we would all evolve the same or if we would evolve into different classes, kinda like the way ants have workers, soldiers and queens.

there is one thing Ive been wondering about, they say we all evolved from apes, if thats the case, why are there still apes?

Well ya kinda answered your own question there :-P

The same way we would most probably evolve along different paths because by then there would be hundreds of billions humans most probably scattered across the galaxy...

No imagine the galaxy is in fact a planet. The human/ape group A on planet/continent A evolve to a higher being. (humans/posthumans in this case) While at the same time, the human/ape group B on planet/continent B have a different culture and don't have the need to, say, have stronger limbs or move differently, stand upright to have a better line of sight and be able to watch for predators. Maybe human A would do the thinking on his own, therefore, the brain modifications, while human B would rather have machines do the work for him, so he'd remain human in nature.

That's how we'd probably evolve differently and why humans are only a branch of the ape family.

Also, you know those tortoises with spikes on their backs? They're a prehistoric type of regular tortoise, except they needed to keep those spikes in order to survive in that environment...

But there are also those who don't think we, at least not entirely, come from apes. Some think we're mixes of apes and aliens and stuff like that...

And about the ant classes... That's pretty much already in our society I think... We've got the world leaders (queens), the working class (workers) and those who aren't considered 'civilians' like the military, etc. (soldiers)

Every generation we evolve. You may not see it, but it's there. The eggheads compared DNA with a sample from the 1800's and the change was evident.

Cool, good to know someone's more up to date than I am :-P I only loosely follow scientific progress, so I probably just didn't hear about that... But it is cool to know that humans might one day be completely different from what we know now. (that is if we don't cause the Earth to self-destruct by then...)

What about the theory; when technology advances so much that 'mind-uploading' becomes possible. While this is happening serious progress in neuroscience and artificial intelligence is under-way, and eventually we're able to isolate individual cognitive modules and connect them up to modules from other uploaded minds. If all these modules conformed to a common standard you could in theory make the individual mind kind of like a block of code, you could take certain traits out or add new coding where wanted.

Want to learn Japanese? Hire a professional language module to articulate your thoughts for you! Why learn arithmetic? Buy some time on Arithmetic-Modules Inc. whenever you need to work out a few nasty calculations. Don't bother making decisions, get some certified executive-modules that can scan your goal structure and manage your assets to the best of your programmed capabilities for you.

Some uploaded minds might want to keep with some of the old ways though, learn japanese through research and taking lessons, do the sums on paper etc. They'd end up more like hobbyists right? Like people who cultivate their own herb gardens, or make their own clothes. Less efficient than regular uploads with their frequently changing base-mind and soon outdated.

Gets the gears turning in the old modules brahs

What if you download a virus?

I dont like the idea of having a computer brain, yeah you could remember everything youve ever learned or seen, but alot of us have things we would rather forget.

If you think about it, most or mabey all of our major achevments are due to a few people, not all of us. And then, most of them drew upon knowledge that was already here, left by older generations. Im sure we have evolved some, but mabey some more than others.

What if you download a virus?

That would be a big issue... Because knowing myself I'd pirate every single program possible and learn every last one of 'em as fast as possible... XD Pirating is bad, m'kay? What would a mental adware look like? O_O Would you have random thoughts that don't belong to you? "MUST... BUY... NOW!"

In every species there are those that exceed at the traits inherent in that species. Falcons with larger wing spans and lungs and sharper claws etc.

Maybe gettting a virus within a module would sort of be the same as if mental illnesses became contagious. Still curable, you might have to reboot the system though and the media would have to constantly be putting out new lists of infected software. Adware would work in the same way, everyone would invest in some kind of anti-virus/adware and at night just take it like a pill from the old days before going to bed.

Ravinclaw, that's why modules are better, you can take out whatever you don't want anymore, like memories and fill in the gaps with self-esteem boosting speeches or a sex scene maybe...

Hmmmmm.  Human evolution.  Let us take a look at that shall we.  Physically we have evolved as far as we can go, oh we might grow to a larger stature, or smaller as befits our environment, we are after all an organism like everything else, and will adjust to our environment.

Now if we are to evolve any more, than it's bound to be mentally, and I am not only referring to how smart someone is, I am referring to greater mental powers.  ESP, telekinetic, ect.  As we evolve along this rout we should soon be talking to one another mentally, and sooner or later we will evolve a physical consciousness.

AS this point who knows, perhaps we will shed our physical bodies in preference of pure mind, lets take it further and say once we reach pure mind we meld together as a whole, once we have done this who knows, maybe we will become a new god and recreate the world we once knew out of nostalgia, and then those we recreated will all sit around for a few 100 thousand years asking "Why did god create us" and "How do we know he created us in his own visage?"

Wow, Muerte, that's a really good theory! Never thought of it that way... Who knows maybe that's what happened before us... So it's kinda like the 4th one I gave in the first post. I liek it!

They say we are evolving mentally, behavior, etc. And physically, but in small ways, immunnities, etc.

Yeah, I heard a couple years ago that our pinky's getting smaller D: And yeah, every new virus finds an immunity, evolves, finds a new immunity and then you get epidemics, then SUPER MUTANTS. JK.

But, yeah, I think the mental capabilities evolving and all is something that could change humanity radically. I mean, if all our descendants become powerful psychics, maybe some long-lasting problems can finally be fixed. Who knows...

so is the y chromosome and if the next step in evolution was indeed Vampirism what the hell would make us evolve that way aaaaaand what woud we feed on???
