THE campaign to save an historic Grade II listed cemetery chapel from being turned into a private flat is taking an unusual step today with protesters taking to the streets dressed as zombies.

Plans have been submitted to Sheffield Council to turn the derelict Anglican chapel in the city's General Cemetery in Sharrow into a luxury home for one family.Developer Steve Wilkinson, who was behind restoration schemes at the city's Glossop Road baths and the jailhouse at Hillsborough barracks, has submitted a planning application to turn the building into a six-bedroom home, which he aims to move into with his wife and children.

But this angered the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust, which over the years has been trying to find the funds to buy the building, which it wants to save and restore.

The trust has now teamed up with Sheffield Music Services in the hope of turning the chapel and the nearby unused Nonconformist Chapel, also Grade II listed, to form Sheffield Music Service's new home from 2008.And today campaigners are taking to the streets of Sheffield dressed as zombies – or "living dead" – in order to highlight their campaign.

The zombies are intending to march from the cemetery to the town hall where they will handover a 3,000-strong petition to council leaders.

A spokesman for the trust said: "The Anglican Chapel and surrounding area has been used by the people of Sheffield for over 150 years and it should remain this way. The trust has been working towards buying the chapel and converting it for wider community use.

Any other development would destroy access to parts of the cemetery. It will also mean the end for a number of successful community events which have taken place at the site."
The council is expected to hear plans for the chapel in the next few weeks.

I hope their protesting does some good. It's horrible that they would cause such a tisk to house only one family. I'm sure other property could be found. %&$
