Title: THE TECHNO THREAD
Post by: Ryobi on August 24, 2009, 02:04:18 PM
Alright so in memory of MB I'm going to try and keep this forum a little bit alive... with the music I know well, techno.

First band of the week will be the 89ers as they are a personal love of mine. Here's some of their sound:

Anyone got any similar bands?

Ryobi, thanks for the link, this is some great music!

I actually saw your thread when I was about to make a techno thread myself :-P

My favorite techno groups are REDALiCE and GainGauge. I recently started listening to both of them, REDALiCE's "CRIMSON HARDCORE" and GainGauge's "DIZZY in Ass-Ault Empire" They're actually two Japanese techno bands. REDALiCE I know is self-published, making it doujin music, but I don't know about GainGauge. They've got some good stuff, especially GainGauge, they also do ambiance.

I found them because one of my favorite artists is the one who draws the cover art for both's CDs.

There's also Tune Up! with their song "Raver's Fantasy", which I like and DJ Dean who's got some nice stuff too, like "Play it Hard".

I use them all for inspiration for the story I'm putting together right now.

I'm listening to GainGauge on youtube right now, interesting name makes me think of biotechnology for some reason  :-P. And REDALiCE, is that the group that did 'Still Alive' at the end of bioshock, if so I already love them! If you like Japanese or more obscure 'asian' techno have you checked out Exit Trance? Sort of like the asian version of Ministry of Sound, except much more underground.

Maybe you should check out Infected Mushrooms or Angerfist? They do a lot of the more 'instrumental' stuff as well...

Personally though I like vocals in my techno, meaning more pop stuff  so DJ Dean's "Play it Hard' is a pretty freakin' sweet suggestion thanks.

As for the techno band for this week, welcome to DeejayRT, a remix/trance artist who should be much more well known than he is. However, his songs tend to either be excellent or pretty dire and he never seems to get it in between.

Here's his version of Fallen Leaves which is my favourite remix of his:

Yeah, well, about GainGauge, look at Redjuice's deviantart profile (http://redjuice999.deviantart.com (http://redjuice999.deviantart.com)) He's the cover artist for all their albums and his drawings fit the biotechnology theme a lot (Stuff like people with robotic limbs, etc.) As for Still Alive, it's at the end of Portal, not Bioshock XD And in the credits, it lists GLaDOS as the artist, but it's really Ellen McLain who sings it. REDALiCE doesn't really have any songs with English lyrics that make any sense, it's just hardcore techno with a bit of Japanese lyrics here and there and a few lines in English. Various remixes of another song called Still Alive are used as the main theme for the game Mirror's Edge.

I checked out Exit Trance; I like it. One of their remixes is actually from my favorite TV show to date.. The song is Lilium, it's the theme for Elfen Lied. Anyway, yeah, they're good!

And DJ Dean's Play it Hard is really one of the songs that got me into techno. After that I started looking around and found more and more artists that I liked...

And wow, I already like Billy Talent when I'm in the right mood, so I really enjoy the remix. Thanks for the suggestion!

Another one I just found while watching a vid on Youtube: Metric. It's not really techno... Actually it's not techno at all, it's a Canadian indie rock band, but I find some of their songs fit well in my Techno playlist. "Succexxy" is one of them. Actually my Techno playlist has industrial and indie mixed in...

Whoops, I always get my games mixed up heh, portals, bioshock they both have mechanical stuff in them? Right?

Strangely the version I have of 'Still Alive' says the artist is REDALiCE o_0 so I'll have to fix that.

I think the groups that first got me into techno were Basshunter and DJ Splash, I'm starting to come to terms with the fact that at least basshunter is a lying, tune stealing player. It hurts because I still love them.  And that's awesome about Exit Trance, I find it's just so good for upbeat, short tracks that get the blood pumping.

If you liked DeejayRT, maybe you should check out Pendulum? A sweet as perth techno group. Or Riverside, which is an ABSOLUTELY HUGE track over here at the mo...

Hmmm I looked for a possible remix of Still Alive by REDALiCE, but nothing showed up.

Nice, Pendulum are great. Riverside's awesome, btw.

Yeh, I reckon it was a mistake in the torrent... so thanks for pointing it out. I've got GLADOS as the artist now.

And I'm glad to know you like Riverside, at first I just listened to it for the video but then I couldn't get the tune out of my head  :-P.

So what else are you listening to at the moment, techno wise?

Not much, I reformatted my PC and forgot to backup my music :P So I'm trying to remember the other stuff I used to listen to...

PS: I just came back from the store where I bought myself new earphones... Earplugs actually, whatever... Riverside sounds great when it comes from inside your head =D

Haha, we use it for backyard raves mostly.

When it gets to a point where people have put out the barbecue and started to seperate into friend groups, on goes Riverside and suddenly everyone is dancing and can't stop.  :-D

Why didn't you back up any of your music btw?

*sigh*... I felt lazy and didn't want to back it all up... My music is scattered across my computer, from my 'downloads' folder to 'documents' and I didn't want to search for every single song...

Search 'file types; mp3, wma, mp4, etc'?  :-P

Ah meh, have fun remembering... I guess it's a good way of cleaning out Windows Media, I have so much stuff I don't want to listen to here and if you're anything like me, you probably had the same.

Wait, I don't think you realize how long it would've been to scan my whole PC looking for those files with my junkyard processor... :-P

But yeah, I'm like that too... My Winamp library tends to fill up with stuff I don't listen to...

Haha, well your fault for having a stupid processor gawsh.  Nah, I reckon I'm going to start clearing a lot of my virtual junk out as well... soon, to make more room for the techno people suggest on here.

This thread seems to have suffered a serious case of chronic sudden-forum-death, so I'll revive it.

I just remembered another tune from DJ Dean: Kick Off. Along with Play It Hard, this is one of those that made me want to listen to more techno... (I just found the torrent from which I had gotten pretty much all my old techno :-P)

This DJ Dean keeps getting mentioned by people, any other tunes you like of his? Might just download a torrent for him  :-D.

Something I did download recently was Armin Van Burren - Imagine Remixes, he reminds me of the Bloc Party remixed stuff (the best of which can be found on Intimacy remixed), it's all really good tune out trance, some sweet ass vocal tracks and the rest at least have a very, very, very decent beat. I reccomend.

Im sorry to say ladies and gentleman but i really REALLY dislike most techno...boardering on hatred of it...i just dont see what the attraction is....it's basically the same thing time and time again. just with differant sound effects and tones...its almost always even the same beat... again im sorry lol

Hehe, I like it because it really gets me going every day. It's like a mini-rave going on in my head :-P (Also a source of inspiration for stories when I want to write something sci-fi or just modern)

But I'll listen to mostly anything, from metal, to punk rock, to hip hop, all the way to techno.

You can head bang in a rave!  :-P

Nah, I like more melodic, trance style techno, doesn't have to have a doof, doof, doof beat at all. Just uses different synth pads instead of instruments.

Then you'll love these two:

You Make My Dreams (DJ Dean Remix) by Angel Beats meets DJ Merlin
and
Into Your Eyes (DJ Dean vs. DJ Reelay Remix) by Angel One

It seems that if it's by DJ Dean, I'm going to like it before I hear it.

I'll check them out.

Been listening to Kylie by Akcent recently and Mojo by Peeping Tom, to very nice vocal techno tracks.

Here's another one: Whistle Song by Pulsedriver (I think On A Whistle Trip is by him too) Both are really good, unless you absolutely want lyrics
