Writing Tips - Interested?
« on: March 13, 2007, 11:33:14 am »
Would anyone be interested in me creating a writing tips section?  I could address a different topic like every week and talk about narrative writing as well as expository writing.  I know that a lot of people would be interested in improving their writing for fun, their arguments, and their academic writing (since this is also a site filled with articles).  Being able to sit down, think about, and write about these subjects would aslo help me greatly to become a better writer as well.

I would be interested, but we can always do that in person if no one else is.  Narrative writing advice would be wonderful to have here as the majority of things posted are either narrative or poems.  Academic writing advice may be better to have somewhere a bit more prominent for those who wish to just write articles or avoid logical fallacies in their thinking or posts.

In any case, I think it is a great and welcome idea.  Your rhetoric classes will be of good use if you can help spread the literary love and skills to us! I'd say you should start a topic about this soon, and we can topics whever the dicussion dies down.

Some thoughts of things to discuss:
Writing style (what's good, what's not both acedemically and based on personal opinion of the board)
How to keep things interesting (avoiding long, boring passages in prose)
Meter and other important poetic devices (for the beginning poet, so they can make their poetry "flow" whether it be free verse or not)
Good description (Because adjectives make the world 3-D and colorful)
Developing characters (Always tough not to go a bit crazy here)
Developing worlds (Again, a tough point because of the complexity required)
Developing plot (storyboarding through the conclusion before starting to avoid plot holes)
How to get over writer's block (Always my worst nemesis)
Getting from point A to point B (When your plot suddenly hits a hitch and you can't figure out where to go)
Dialogue (This can make or break a good story, so it's important to understand it!)
Speaking to the correct audience (Don't talk down to your peers or talk over the heads of the younger)
Symbolism and motifs (making memorable reoccuring signs can make for a memorable tale overall)

There's probably more I can think of, but that's just the basics.

Okay, I'll do some research this afternoon and see if I can come up with a good place to start.

I'd like to help with this idea. Are you thinking of giving tips concerning grammatical structure or content?

Who said I was in the closet? Oh wait... that's right, I have Raz in here with me... and his dress was caught in the door... DAMN! Oh well, I swear I was just experimenting with Catholicism and soft, hairless little philippino boys.
