"Dawn of the Dead", and why was it scary?

Okay, I have seen the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" and i can honestly say I like it. Some may agree and some may disagree, but one thing most people would admit is that this movie was in fact scary, even if for a moment. Now I believe that this movie was bone chilling due to three very important qualities the movie possessed.
One: This movie wasn't based on in some old abandoned house on a hill or in some remote area, but in suburbia. I feel it adds a certain level of realism compared to a house in the woods. Now the suburbs scare me anyway but with the idea of flesh craving zombies running around everywhere really makes me shake, and that's my second point.
Two: The zombies in this flick can Run! You may think that that particular fact is pointless but think back to all the other zombie movies made. All the undead were slow moving, dim witted creatures who could be avoided if you quickly walk around them. But in "Dawn of the Dead" these undead mofo's will climb, break glass, and run after you until they make you into dinner. And if that doesn't scare you a little then all I have to say is everyone shoot for the head!
And Three: I know this probably falls back on the first one but I still find it important to mention. And that is that the movie sticks to it's title and begins on some random, average morning. I think this fact scares me the most. I mean usually some unexplanable storm rolls in and blocks out the sun until the end or it's always night time, but this time it's different. In the beginning, and I don't feel that this will ruin the movie for those who haven't seen it yet, but in the morning scene where that guy's daughter rips out a chuck of his neck, it shows us that anyone can turn on us, and really beginning the movie with a resounding, AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
But that's may opinion and I stick by it, what do you think?

Haven't seen it yet but plan to.  I'm a big fan of the original and the remake looks good.  It seems to be the growing trend in zombie movie that the undead move quickly and have animal cunning.  28 Days Later followed this format (and was a good movie too!)

Your attitude is the only thing they can't take from you.

Hey Beast! I thought Dawn of the Dead was great as well. I am/was a huge fan of the original, and i thought that the remake held up really, really well. It wasn't as powerful as the original, in my opinion, but was still an excellent film.

And, i think you did a nice job in pointing out what made this movie so good and unique.. Set in suberbia, running zombies, and the fact that this happens on any random morning or day of the week..

Also, the plotline was very well written, as well as the acting and special effects..

Zak, if you liked 28 days later, i think you'd love the Dawn of the Dead remake..It's a lot more fast paced with a lot more action and zombie insanity!!

i like this movie becuase of the "jump" factor, and i agree that the running zombies make a diffrence. i like the way it balanced horror, suspence, action and comedy.........8.5/10
Music may tame the savage beast, but not as fast as a brick to the back of the head.

I didn't think it was scary, but I really don't care for Zombie movies. I'm a Classic Monster girl.

I've got some classic favorites as well Whitewind. Dementia13, the Last Man on Earth, Carnival of Souls, White Zombie, Freaks, A Bucket of Blood, and of course all the more well known classics like Dracula, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, ect.. There were also a lot of great Sci-Fi films made in this early era.. Though, i'd have to say that my favorite piece of nostalgia from this period is with the 1960's Twilight Zone series. I own every episode of Twilight Zone in 5 box sets which i've purchased over the past year or two.. Nearly every episode is a masterpiece of story telling..

There's also some good stuff from the 60's and 70's, like Rosemary's Baby, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Phatasm, and many others. And then with the 80's horror kinda got reinvented and revived for the pop culture, with a million movies that all saturated the movie theatres and video stores.

Mythological monsters and entities is extremely facinating research as well...

Anyway, what did you guys think about the Night of the Living Dead remake from the early 90's? I re-watched it recently and think it held up pretty well in comparison to the new version of Dawn...
