Title: A Lost World...
Post by: thneedly on September 23, 2008, 01:58:01 AM
I am a big fan of the Hollow Earth idea, since it is one of the oldest subjects in the studies of esoterica and the paranormal. Sadly, this section of the site doesn't have much padding to it. I figure I may as well fix that problem.
Say you were to find your way into a world inside of Earth, whether it was an enormous cavern or network of caves, a subterranean portal to another dimension, or an actual world inside the hollow of our planet...What would you hope to find there? What creatures would live there? What would the environment be like? What would the weather be like?
Use this thread to create your own "lost world" inside the Earth.

The usuals, with my own added flare.  Lush tropical weather, jungles, luminescent pools and oceans of youth-giving god-water, cattle cause I'll want steak, a relic population of relatively tame tyrannosaur descendants that won't eat me nor my cattle cause they prefer to hunt lesser dinosaur descendants.  And a tribe of hot gorgeous women with a constant sex drive and no male tribe members.

God, how I'd love to screw a chick on the back of a T-Rex! :-o :-D

Wow, that is awesome.

Mine: I want a world deeep down, heated by hot water geysers, so we can bathe, with lush tropical jungles of special fungi so they can survive the lack of sunlight. With a large, healthy ecosystem of varied species of deep cave fish, bugs, crabs, & bats. & our own domesticated cats, dogs, pigs, & cows. Plus some battle velociraptor/birds.

I will be queen of my own tribe of sexy human mutants. & we shall battle other tribes, for plunder, slaves, & territory. We shall use summoned creatures, our special mutant powers, & magic to light up, & keep hidden our special world from stupid surface dwellers.

A lot of neat ideas here. I think the reality would be somewhat more prosaic though. Giant, drab fungi that subisist on underground deposits of water and the rotting remains of dead organisms, for example. As for the fauna, it would consist of a myraid of grubs and incests that have completely lost the ability of sight due to the eternal darkness that pervades the depths. I would make a tidy proift from farming the grub and fungi and selling them to surface dwellers desperate to find new sources of food on an increasingly unsustainable planet.

I'd want a little bit of everything we have up here to be down there as well. I love all the seasons too much to want to lose everything completely. But I would be Goddess of my own world and create each season when I desire it. What's the point of being there if I'm not in total control? Crikey.. that is a lot to do though... Maybe I should recruit a certain God to help me...

Being an enormous nerd, I've actually thought long about this...Being the strange person I am, the way that I've imagined this "lost world" is both fantastical enough not to be boring, but scientifically feasable enough to not be outright fantasy.
I imagine some sort of incredibly large network of huge caverns, all of them lit by luminescent gas that gravitates toward the ceiling of the cavern. Along with this, I can imagine species of bioluminescent plant and fungus that synthesize sunlight. As far as fauna, there are many species that are descendants of long-extinct animals from the surface world, as well as many creatures that evolved unique to the ecosystem in these caverns. There might even be some species of modern animals from the above world that managed to accidentally find their way down there the same way the previously-thought-extinct animals did; natural disasters, pressure due to lack of resources, or simply curiosity.
If there were intelligent beings, they would most likely be human, or descended from hominids that had found their way into the caves the same way the animals might. Again, I can imagine more than one culture or tribe of humans if the cavern were big enough, resources were plentiful enough, and the circumstances leading to their migration there were just right.
Again, I like to make it crazy, wild, and fun enough not to be mindnumbingly dull *cough*blow_fly*cough*, but still within the realms of scientific possibility, given that things happened just the right way.

Well that was rude and unnecessary..

Was that really necessary? I mean, that does seem rather rude and quite unwarranted. Are you really so desperate to prove yourself?
I wasn't really aware that this was a competition, either. Had I known, I most definitely would have made my post much more flamboyant and completely unrealistic to compete with your "tribe of sexy mutant humans" and "special mutant powers".

Well I'm glad you find it funny when someone is offended. That's nice.

Let's dissect this, shall we?
First of all, you start your post with "Lol", meaning you find it funny that you offended me.
Secondly, since when does the jester emoticon mean anything? Plenty of people here, you included, make unnecessary and disrespectful comments and find them absolutely hilarious. Use of that emoticon does not mean you are joking, it simply means you lack the class and maturity not to laugh at your own disrespectful remarks.

Giant mealworms that I'd domesticate and ride. I'd also have a captive population of abducted surface dwellers that are forced to cultivate my fungi crops and rear my giant grubs. Form time to time, I'd launch new slave raids to provide fresh material for the genepool of my slaves. I'd also capture and breed giant luminiscent grubs to provide illumination for the operation of my farms and bug ranches.

This reminds me of journey to the center of the earth...I would expect to see a plethorah of extinct plants and animals.
