Boy convicted of Goth park murder
-Sophie Lancaster

Anger of attack survivor
Darker side of Goth life

A 15-year-old boy has been found guilty of murder after he kicked a woman to death because she was a Goth.

Brendan Harris set upon Sophie Lancaster, 20, in a Lancashire park after he and four other youths assaulted her boyfriend Robert Maltby. Ryan Herbert, 16, had already admitted murdering Miss Lancaster in Stubbylee Park, Bacup, last August.

Det Supt Mick Gradwell, of Lancashire Police, said it was one of the most violent murders he had seen.
He said that Herbert and Harris, who were named when the judge at Preston Crown Court lifted an order banning their identification, did not recognise how violent the attack was. Mr Gradwell also criticised some of the parents of the boys involved, saying their attitude had been "appalling".

Miss Lancaster, a gap year student, died from serious head injuries two weeks after the incident while 21-year-old Mr Maltby survived.

I am convinced Sophie was killed simply because of the way she looked

Prosecutor Michael Shorrock had told the court the gang, who had been drinking, had turned on the young couple simply because they were Goths and were dressed differently. Harris admitted punching Mr Maltby once in the face, but claimed he played no further part in the attack.
Both Harris and Herbert pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Maltby, along with three other males, two aged 17 and one 16, who still cannot be named.

Judge Anthony Russell QC praised the families of both Miss Lancaster and Mr Maltby for their dignity "during what must have been a very, very harrowing ordeal".
He also thanked witnesses who had helped the victims and had given evidence in court. He ordered them to be awarded £250 each.

The judge said that he was duty bound to give Harris and Herbert life sentences but that he would set the tariffs on 28 April.

In a statement released after the verdict, Sylvia Lancaster said her daughter's death was a tragedy to both the family and wider society.

She said: "First, obviously, I have lost an adoring and adorable daughter. She was intelligent, brave, courageous and had a social conscience beyond her years.

"Her death has also ruined the lives of those responsible as well as the lives of their families.

"On a wider scale, it is a tragedy for a society which, in the past, has prided itself on its tolerance. I am convinced Sophie was killed simply because of the way she looked. She did not necessarily conform to the ideals of those who took her life."

Det Supt Gradwell said it was one of the most violent murders he had come across in his lengthy career.

He said: "It was a totally unnecessary and appalling set of circumstances.

"I do not think Herbert and Harris have recognized how violent the attack was.

"They have just done it without thinking but they have seemed to have enjoyed it and carried on remorselessly kicking at two very defenseless people who were unable to protect themselves because of the level of violence inflicted upon them.

"There was a total lack of parental control.

"I am very critical of some of the parents involved. I really don't think they have taken completely seriously how repulsive this incident was."

He said that when Harris was initially interviewed about the assaults he was "laughing and joking" with his mother.

Goths emerged as a youth subculture in the early 1980s.

Although initially used to describe a form of music, it has evolved to encompass literature, art and fashion, with its exponents typically dressing in dark clothing.

Yep, prejudice are far from over. If more people decided to beat up others to death just by their appearance, I guess the world wouldn't be as overpopulated, sad but true.
And now my friends for poor Sophie a respectful minute of silence, she's in a better place.

Why is it so bad? Cause people tend to fear differences, they lack education and normal parents. If their parents were normal, educated and wide minded people, they wold teach their children better than that. This way, it leaded to a most discus ting murder, sad rest of her parents life, and committing the young ones in jail for stupid, stupid thing.  :x

The most sad part is that it is unfortunately like we still live in farking dark ages, and when one points a finger screaming: "Witch, witch!" the mob still does what mob is..... this world really needs some huge disaster, and I dont mean just poor far from site people..... although, stupid people will always be stupid people, and wouldnt recognize a right choice even if it hit them in their bloody nose....

Poor girl.....

I fell very sorry for Robert too, her boyfriend, to be knocked out, having Sophie hold him in his arms and seeing her being beaten was the last thing he woud see before blacking out, in an interview he described as "sickening". He had awoken days later with the only desire to see her and only when he saw her funeral was when it all came to his head. He wished it happened to him instead, he had even wore a pair of black wings in the last farewell.

Now I realize why we're goth, because summing it up we are against the cruel people who judge others by their trends or beliefs. For those who had participated in the killings before and in Sophie's murder: F*** YOU, BASTARDS! Let fate punish them for their inhuman deeds, I say, let's hope they'll one day pay screaming for mercy. The dark ages were never gone, it was ever-present, eternal, carried on for centuries and somehow still pointing accusing fingers yelling "WITCH!"but you know what, my friends? They were the murderers! All of the members of the nocturne subculture should have joined together in protest and in unison say "Their were the witches all along, they were evil, they deserve to be burned at the stake!"

Maybe one day they'll pay, maybe not. But I'm proud of being myself now more than ever, especially when an angel of darkness is looking down at us from heaven - and I just stop and wonder what she would have wanted or done.

Whoa I had to look up what eunuchs was  :-o and now I realize that it's a great option. But they should be separated by the society anyways, and it doesn't guarantee to prevent other young haters running amok the world, these types of things happen everyday in many places, and it could happen to me, you, a boyfriend or anyone we know, fact is that no one is exactly safe, goth or not.
What upsets me most is how people can commit such crimes and never have a hint of remorse, shame or guilt. They never regret and act as if it was completely normal to kill and ruin another person's life, in fact they even do it for fun.

Did you watch on news how to very young boys (again) killed a girl just two years old? It really doesnt matter to that type of humans (?) they really dont need an excuse to do what they want. They simply enjoy in torture and murder, and one day when they grow up they certainly wont be normal human beings. I like the idea of castrating those and not allowing such a sadistic genes to spread ever again.

And we think we are monstrous....
Title: Re: A Goth has been murdered
Post by: Sick_Angel13 on May 25, 2008, 06:30:15 AM

And we think we are monstrous....

Then again, fictional stories like Frankenstein show that some humans are to be proven more monster, because Frank was never evil. When Dr. Frankenstein created him, the story says that the scientist had realized this creation was hideous and ran off even if the monster grinned at him at first sight, Frankenstein's creation only decided to go against natural humans because everyone was scared of him and didn't want to be his friend.

Moral of the story: some humans are the true monsters, things are never what they appear to be, especially serial killers who have a behavior and appearance so normal you wouldn't suspect they're hiding corpses in their closet. And hardcore rock thuds who look like hell in human form but are the most wonderful people you could ever meet. It all depends.
Ok there goes my two cents. :-D

Shame and remorse is not required, you do not ask for shame or remorse when you put down a rabid dog, you just do it............... or send it to scientists to experiment on, or a glue factory!

Hey maybe we can like "forcibly" convince these bastards, to donate thier organs! :-D

Still, there must  always, always be a chance for redemption...... if only to educate us on what monsters truly seek....

About the organs: I really doubt anyone would want to live with peace of ruthless murderer inside

About redemption: let God be the judge, he is known for cruelty as well, even more than humans can imagine  <^>

I was watching tv today and there was a comercial fro some company and this woman went to this store where this goth worked and got freaked out and went to the store being advertised. I'm not a goth, but i would find that very offensive. its insinuating that goths aren't nice people and you should be scared of them. idk it just makes me mad.

Title: Re: A Goth has been murdered
Post by: Kadesh on May 27, 2008, 02:38:10 PM
No, actually. My personality and who I am are what commands respect. Not how I look. I dress the way I do to make sure I get looked at though. I enjoy it, no matter how I'm dressed.
Title: Re: A Goth has been murdered
Post by: Sick_Angel13 on May 27, 2008, 02:57:08 PM
Yeah but you dress for yourself, not for the others. If someone's trying too hard to impress others that isn't good, the main reason why we goths are like this is because we won't care what other people think, it makes us feel good or/and it is a way to express ourselves. <^>

It depends on what is the definition of "good" is, obviously a goth can choose a dark outfit and still look decent, but I choose to paint purple streaks on my hair and choose to wear a black-something that is good for ME but is not exactly the thing most of the others would admire. Some favor wearing as horrible  possible which could be to call attention or receive the desired "freak" label, while others are the way they want to be not caring to the impression they are giving, good or not.
Does anyone have thought of something different?

I believe the people that dress to impress (as the saying goes) are what you call 'posers.'

"posers" the right word for it, posers would do that or posers who do it to fit in a crowd.

Gosh that's only for someone who has socializing problems, I guess most like you won't understand, take for example a place like high school (where many cases like these happen) for being unpopular and an outcast are one of the main things feared by teens (you can see that a lot in movies "Speak" "Thirteen" etc) because everyone has their clan. And being poser is mainly the result of wanting badly to be accepted in a group.
Oh wait, just because I find it difficult to interact with others doesn't mean everyone else does. never mind.

meh, we live in a world where people judge you by the way you look. so? just because its popular doesn't mean its automatically bad.

you can dress trendy and s**t and still like what you wear right? and even if you don't, you know your much better than those guys that "pose" for the masses, sheep. Leaders are those with thier own style, those that don't bow. those who stand with each other because they are equals, not because they are dressed the same.

So are you a leader?  will you be deceived? do you show the world who you are? do people want to piss you off because they are too afraid to show themselves?

Will you shun and ignore them as you are shunned and ignored? will you educate them or will you hate them?
Will you act like a saint, an honorable warrior, or a common drunk?

Will you let them get to you?

ask yourself....... am i any different from those that i hate?

But are we making a statement when we look different? or are we being ourselves? do we dress differently so others will notice that we are different or do we wear what we wear because we like it because of how it looks?

This is what separates a king from a peasant, from a merchant, from a knight, from a priest.

the king leads, the peasant reveres and bows, the merchant asks for endorsements, the knight serves, and the priest begs.

The king is not a king because of his possessions or his position , he is king because he does not bow, because he serves as an example, as an ideal. as a symbol of his people, his will, and his justice.

Are you your own king or will you bow to others and give them kingship over yourself.

(note: we are not talking about god and religion here so do not bring them up. this is a bit of my own personal philosophy, my stand on religion has nothing to do with this. nor does this have anything to capitalsim or stuff like that)

((note 2: What REALLY i'm trying to say is if people like you, then they like you, if not then they can suck themselves off. and that kissing ass is for losers and sheep..... unless you like the taste of as in which case go for it!...sicko!))

When I was in school, I'll admit I wanted to be 'normal.' To just be someone that went unnoticed and didn't get made fun of. But, now that I'm a woman... I'm perfectly happy the way I am. I don't dress the way I do because it's in style. I put it on because I like the way it feels.. I like the way it looks. If other people like it, than they just recognize what fabulous taste I have... if not... blow me.  :-D But this confidence has been hard-won... and some days I just don't have the energy to keep it up. I let everything go and just put whatevers closest on, not caring what it is. Those days are becoming fewer and farther between the more I learn about myself and the more I mature. (I say mature, because I'll never actually grow up. I refuse to.)

What does it mean to REALLY grow up anyway?.......... does it mean that we stop whining ever time we feel the need to do so? does it mean that we are free of childhood memories and immaturity? or is it just a phase?

we do get a second childhood ya know? :-D

Why does everybody wanna fit in so badly? fitting in with a society of idiots is not the way to go...I guess the reason people try to fit in is so they can actually be somebody (even if it is just being a sheep)

Now me i got different motives, i hate society, and most of the idiots in it, I love not fitting in Gives me one more reason to say I dont give  a f***

I be the opposite from everybody, why? cuz its so much more fun being a "rebel" to the rest of our precious little society than a puppet that bends to everybodys will, Everybody trys so hard to fit in...Why try to change for somebody elses oppinion? I dont see why people try to be something there not, Around where i live there is Emos, Skaters, and wannabee Gangsters, Now im not any of those yet i love to skate, i sometimes get sad or mad over something, and i dress sometime wannabee-ish, But yet im opposite from all of those at the same time, i love dressing grungy on perpous, everybody looks at me and thinks to themselves why is he wearing that its out of style, and i reply well im wearing it cuz i dont wanna look like a fool and when you guys start dressing grungy ima start dressing differently, i like to be my own person, not a follower/sheep/puppet

So yall just got my view on everything shall i go into governmental stuff now? *<:)

Ha,its no longer an enigma. No longer puzzling in it's nature because it's a group that doesn't offer invations but Is a group of collective peoples that share a commonality.Therefore,unifying.
No matter what makes us "different",we may think we are unique and void of a cohort. Our antisocialistic view of blending in with society brings us that much closer together.
Think of it:
Serial Killers all share a group now matter how they kill their victims they all share an urge to kill.Whether it be voluntary or involuntary.

When I looked at it in that perspective,I saw countless parallels in mostly all groups.I dare you to point out one that doesn't make sense for as humans,we all share a common bond with at least one other person in this world.
