The controversy was that many of the cadavers are "unclaimed corpses" provided by local authorities in China and Russia. Which removes the "donor consent" concept. Also, China isn't well-known for its regulatory attention to these matters, and it has been suggested that some were the corpses of executed criminals, which, along with the controversy about convicts being executed for their organs to be harvested, kinda leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
However, controversy aside, it is a fascinating exhibition. I saw it in London, quite a few years ago. Enthralling, if gruesome.
