Title: What phase of the moon were you born under?
Post by: phyrrestar on December 15, 2006, 07:55:29 AM
As I'm sure you all know, one of the very famous myths about werewolves is that a child born under the new moon will become a were.  Another common superstition is that a child born on Friday under the full moon will become a werewolf as well.  That made me wonder what phase you all were born under and if there is even a corrolation between the two.  If you don't already know, check it out here:

http://www.paulsadowski.org/moonphases/default.asp

I was born under a nearly new moon, 28 days old, with only 0.83% illumination. How about you all?

This is my first post in this forum, other than the introduction. I don't use the term were, but Therian. I hope this doesn't bother anyone, but I'd rather not be associated with a hairy Hollywood character ^.~ once again. No offense.

However, in my case, the theory is almost correct:

First post. Whether were or therian, I born under a full moon with perfect visibility, under the zodiac sign of Pisces (water) which corresponds with the native american sign of the wolf in the chinese year of the water monkey, so the moon has a strong influence upon me. But that's not all. I also have vampiric tendencies and am a practicing Wiccan. Any suggestion how that is possible?
Title: Re: What phase of the moon were you born under?
Post by: Jake on December 10, 2011, 02:21:32 PM
Any suggestion how that is possible?

Approximately nine months earlier, your parents had sex and you were successfully conceived.

full moon ... zodiac sign...  native american sign... chinese year...

You commit a combination of logical fallacies: first by presupposing that any of those "signs" actually mean anything real, and second by assuming an underestimation of the probability of someone being born under those ... "signs". As it happens, approximately 357,000 other people were born the same day as you.

I guess 714,000 people were having sex about nine months prior to that. That's a lot of whoopee.*

*You disagree? Imagine it in your living room.
Title: Re: What phase of the moon were you born under?
Post by: whitedemonwolf on December 11, 2011, 09:39:11 PM
Logical fallacies or not, myself and other Wiccans hold true astrology in high regard. And I also understand that I wasn't the only person born the day or the hour that I was. And either you misunderstood what I meant when asking how it was possible or you simply overlooked it. Congratulations on being the first to mock me on this site.
Title: Re: What phase of the moon were you born under?
Post by: Jake on December 14, 2011, 03:52:18 AM
Logical fallacies or not, myself and other Wiccans hold true astrology in high regard.

A group of people, no matter how large, holding a belief in high regard is not evidence that the belief is correct. That is simply argumentum ad populum. And what exactly is "true" astrology? Babylonian? Ptolemaic? Hellenistic? Siddhanta? Samhita? Vāstu Shāstra? 紫微斗数 ?

And I also understand that I wasn't the only person born the day or the hour that I was.

Are they all the same as you? Everyone in the world born between Feb 20 and Mar 20 1992 is "Imaginative and sensitive, compassionate and kind, selfless and unworldly, intuitive and sympathetic"? (Piscean "traits") If asked, probably most would agree - that's how Confirmation Bias (http://youarenotsosmart.com/2010/06/23/confirmation-bias/) works... Or do you think they would choose instead to describe themselves as "Dull and insensitive, uncaring and cruel, selfish and greedy, slow to catch on and unsympathetic..."?

Besides, (ignoring the discovery of new planets in the solar system), the precession of the equinoxes and solstices has moved about 30 degrees in the last 2000 years, making any predictions about personality irrelevant as those alive today were probably born under completely different astrological signs than those around when astrology was being formulated.

Why does the moment of birth matter anyway? Why not the moment of conception? Or the moment your unborn body reached full formation prior to actual birth? Were you protected from planetary and astral influences by the womb, like a kind of "meat shield", until you were fully out of your mother's body? If a thin layer of muscle and tissue protects from those influences, why not the brick and concrete walls of the hospital?

Congratulations on being the first to mock me on this site.

I'm not mocking you, I'm poking a stick at your theories. There is a huge difference.

I read the attached article ad I must say it's quite interesting. You also raised some questions and trains of thought I hadn't considered. For that, I thank you. You are certainly well informed or well researched. Astrology of any kind is based on the belief that the stars and planets affect the basis of an individuals characteristics. And a theory on why it's the day of birth and not conception is that the date for conception is much harder to pinpoint in contrast to the time of birth.

I would prefer to live in a universe where we are all about as unique as we possibly can be given our, way back, common ancestry, rather than one where my whole life and personality was predetermined by what phase of the moon I was born under. I prefer the tug of nature/nurture deciding my personality over the notional gravitational tug of the tides or the position of some stars which don't really look anything like the animal whose traits I might supposedly develop =)

I'm glad that you found that article thought-provoking, by the way.
