So, I plan on building my own Ouija Board, and was wondering if there were any specifics to designing it - like is one type of wood better than the other? Is there a design layout that works the best? And what would make a good planchette?

Really anything would work but I'd highly advise against creating and/or using a Quija board. It too often ends up being an open doorway to whomever or whatever wants to come through & creates more problems.

that being said you should keep your ouija bored in a spiritualy blessed and  warded place or like tarot cards within a cedar box.
and iw ould recommend you make it out of cypress wood because its wood and poplar wood and yew wood all have alot of lore when it comes to death.
the wind that chills the night, the fire's golden light
the oceans call to you, the earthen fated tune,
I am the ivy binding tight i hold the spells all through the night, i am
nightshade's fated swoon of deaths kiss and witches broom
