Title: The God Particle
Post by: chaoticpsyche on October 10, 2010, 09:53:19 AM
So I am not sure exactly where to post this. This is a continuation of my post from http://www.monstrous.com/forum/index.php/topic,7299.msg122087.html#new (http://www.monstrous.com/forum/index.php/topic,7299.msg122087.html#new) . But here goes. :)

The Higgs boson is a hypothetical massive scalar elementary particle predicted to exist by the Standard Model of particle physics. The existence of this non-zero vacuum expectation plays a fundamental role: it gives mass to every elementary particle that couples to the Higgs field, including the Higgs boson itself. In particular, the acquisition of a non-zero vacuum expectation value spontaneously breaks electroweak gauge symmetry, which scientists often refer to as the Higgs mechanism.*

The Higgs Boson is also known as the God Particle in particle physics. I don't quiet fully understand it, however, It is interesting none the less. 'The reason It is called the god particle is because all other particles are dependent on it for mass.' **

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:CMS_Higgs-event.jpg) This is a simulated event of the god particle, since it hasn't actually been observed.

As in my last post I brought up a TV show called Numb3rs. However, I can't seem to find any clips showing them actually working on the god particle >_< even though I am sure that there are some. I am interested in what you think about this, I hope that it will be an awesome and enlightening.

As i understand it they have kinda guessed it is there, guessed what it does, guessed how to find it. Now they are looking to find evidence of all their guesses.
Sounds like a scientific version of intuition to me.

I dont know why it has the 'God' moniker though. Its just a further more detailed set of definitions about stuff. The 'God' word is just muddying the waters.

Where is Vivid when you need him. He actually was a quantumn physicist.

I think the reason they have the 'God' moniker was because it's what gives the particles mass... However, I could be completely off base with that one.

Really? There was a quantum physicist here? O___O wow That's awesome! :)

Yes we had a quantumn physicist as mod and guardian for a while.

I think he is now in a secret bunker somewhere dreaming about time and doing insane maths equations.

Re the higgs-bosun thingy, I still dont see what God has got to do with creating mass. Might as well say God is neutrinos or oxygen.

Everything has mass..... and everything has energy...... what else does everything have?

what else does everything else have........potential?

(though i am tempted to name people whose mere presence disproves this)

Do you really think God has mass though?
Personally I think its a mix of descriptions of reality that dont translate perfectly. 'Chalk and cheese' an all that.

Perhaps God is potential and energy and mass......... or rather is something that determines these things........................................no that does not make sense.

Perhaps something as yet undefined.. Perhaps that could be what god uses to order the universe.

I read the article **http://www.christianpost.com/blogs/creationvsevolution/2010/02/what-is-the-god-particle-all-about-12/.

I love his statements.
"It does serve to prove just how alike Christians and Scientists are when it comes to faith in their respective "religions".

Both are based on faith in the existence of an unseen force that controls the universe."

Nice little article. Short too, which is good.

Long rambling posts with too many links are a dead give away of mental imbalance.

Put in more scientific terms     lrp  = nuts
