Title: Games that freaked you out
Post by: KubeSix on August 03, 2009, 07:57:31 PM
Okay, games that made you not sleep at night!

Mine was American McGee's Alice. I was about 9 at the time and I was scared sh*tless by the Cheshire Cat... It's smile and long, spine-like neck freaked me out... I don't know why the smile scared me, though, as it's the same as the real Cheshire's, but I guess the mix with an almost skeletal body did the trick. (Maybe the blood on his teeth on one of the concept arts, too? Just maybe...) Plus, my brother had the good idea of putting his face as the background on our computer at the time... That didn't stop me from enjoying the game, though! I'm playing through it again, as they're making a sequel along with a movie...

For those who don't know what it is, it's a sequel to Alice's two other adventures. (Wonderland and Behind the Looking Glass.) Her house burns (If I remember well, she's the one who starts the fire, but I might be mistaken) and her parents die. Afterward she goes crazy and is put in a psychiatric hospital where she sinks into Wonderland once more, but this time, since she's become insane and Wonderland's a creation of her mind, it's warped into a reflection of her mind and so are the characters, hence the scary Cheshire Cat. The locations of the new Wonderland include a school for insane children, which you can see rolled up in corners, laughing or sometimes crying as you'd expect an insane child to do, a warped maze modeled after the real-life asylum where the real-life Alice is sent at the beginning and many more. Thumbs up to American McGee on this one.

Can't wait for the sequel! That game marked my childhood! (In many ways, for better or worse :-P)

Another game, more recent, is Dead Space. I played for a while in spring... Why did I play it with the lights out at 3 AM, I'll never know, but I was scared as hell O_O It's not the monsters or anything, but the sounds around you and the feeling of isolation. You're alone, on an abandoned spaceship with all the crew turned into mutants. The camera is an over-the-shoulder one, so the feeling that you could get attacked at anytime is just greater. I've spent more time standing in a room, wondering if I should go through a door or just close the game for longer than I've actually played it... Not as good as Alice, thuogh, which i to be expected since the graphics take over the importance of a good story... (And making a horror-themed sequel to Alice really was a good story)

What are your games that made you restless?

Ah, Silent Hill... Another one that scared the living crap outta me... I remember this room in the third one... It was a public washroom and you could see a trail of blood going under a door, into one of the stalls. In the stall, there was nothing left, just blood splashed all over the walls and traces where the person had put their hands, trying to pull themselves up. Creepy stuff... That's the thing with Silent Hill, it's that it's just plain disturbing. Also, the nurses are always something that's marked me in those games...

Yeah I remember the giants with the big arms! They were creepy o.O There were also those weird dog-like monsters if I remember correctly...

Another game that scared me (Well the video when you pop in the CD was scarier, in my opinion, but anyway) was Parasite Eve... All those animals, twisted and mutated... The rat... Damn, the rat... It was stretched so that the skin after its chest was ripped in half, so you could see its rib cage and everything, then its tail opened in three and got really long... Its face too, its lower jaw was ripped in half the whole length... (I haven't seen those for years, so I might be going a lil crazy and adding details, but from what I remember that's what they looked like) Why the opening cinematic scared me so much was because you actually saw the rat morphing into this twisted form. So you had the rat running along a hallway then it would start squirming and growing as its skin ripped open and you got to see it all in detail. Then again, I was like 6 when that game came out, so anything that gory would've scared me. From what I remember the game was really good, though. Too bad Eve wasn't scary... They could've (should've) made her all warped like the animals were... Instead she just got those huge claws and after a while, she turned into a huge blob thing.

I didn't remember the split heads, but it was long ago, so I don't remember everything exactly. Yeah, Cerberus, entering a nightmare world, it all makes sense.

No, it wasn't sarcastic XD Sorry if that's what it looked like. I just said that 'cause I hadn't seen the symbolism behind the Double Heads before. (although I do remember hearing something about it I think)

No, it's okay, I was being sarcastic. :-D

XD you're evil, moon...

I think I read about it on wikipedia... I had nothing to do last year and decided to look up Silent Hill and ended up reading every single word of the articles :-P There really is lots of hidden stuff in there...

For me it's The suffering 1 & 2 when you play them for the first time your not expecting the random evil visions.

So has anyone played Metro 2033 yet? If not, do so. It probably won't freak you out, but you'll get those "I really REALLY don't wanna step into that dark hallway." moments.

I will never call games like Doom 3, F.E.A.R, Left4Dead and Resident Evil as horror games. But Action-Horror games.

As they are totally easy to venture and nothing much on the FEAR factor. You got the guns'n'blazin and action filled world.

Games like Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark -put another PC game here-  We find that most scariest games are on PC only.

These games are what we call as Psychological Horror. These types of games are interlocking on the Idea scaring the gamer through emotion and feelings; this is from where we score such games as real horror games, and not some shooting zombie game.

I think I wrote one like this somewhere, no? Yeah... I did... may be not.

If you want the "Survival" part of survival horror games, you'll love it. It's not Left 4 Dead-ish where you can just go in guns blazing and kill everything in a few seconds; ammo, for example, is extremely rare (it even serves as currency in the Metro)

It also adds stealth to the genre, which really makes the whole dark tunnel + mutants creeping around a lot more interesting, as you don't always want to risk another fight. (You don't have that much health either.)

Actually, it's not good. It's great.

I never played RE1, just saw others play when I was little...

Yeah, Dead Space is creepy. The whole ambiance of the ship is just unsettling.
