The earliest reports of Vampires originate from middle/eastern Europe (mostly Romania) about the same time as a large rabies outbreak.

One can find many logical connections between basic Vampire stories and rabies symptoms. Rabies causes aggression, feral behaviour and is transmitted through biting and braking the skin. Rabies is also a fairly visible condition that affects most animals and humans.

You see a man in the woods foaming at the mouth one day and a dog foaming at the mouth the next. Why couldn't it just be that the man changed shape? Then, when the man's body is found dead it is bleeding from the mouth and bloated (natural build ups of glass and fluid cause this to happen) giving the appearance of having gorged itself on blood and has enlarged teeth and nails (due to skin tightening post death.)

I think we covered the main traits of early Vampirism there, so you can see how the Vampire myth would have evolved from something as simple as an outbreak of rabies and poor medical knowledge. From there, it was a simple case of word-of-mouth exaggeration and horror writers slowly transforming Vampires into the more modern types we see in fiction today.

Anyone claiming to be a real life Vampire of any type is either twisting the definition (usually into something believable but unprovable) or just full of it. If you want the true definition of a Vampire the just go with your favourite; you can make them what you want.

I prefer the classical, monstrous, Dracular style Vamp. I don't like these new-age, romanticised Vampires. Anything that goes from being nightmare fuel to being a young girl's love fantasy can't be good.

Actually, it's an effective ploy if you ask me. The vampires realized they weren't going to get a bite if they actually looked undead, so they started dressing themselves in designer clothes to attract young victims girls. Just add sparkles and you can directly tell people you're a vampire and they still won't run away screaming. All a matter of trading scariness for effectiveness.

Second, as I must inquire, what's worse nightmare fuel than young fan girls?

i like the white wolf vampires, they're manifested from your own mind, you give them a life, a character and they have rules they need to follow...to be spedific, the Tremere, the only vampires not considered real vampires in that world because they derived their vampirism from the occult rather than unnatural descendants of cain, the first vampire.  The system makes sense and roleplaying is the best place for "real" vampires to exist in a society.

In reality...trendy people that think it's cool to be unsupernatural, supernatural creatures...except maybe the energy feeders, but that has less to do with vampirism and more to do with existing, natural energies that i do believe people can control all being made from the same stuff, whatever you name it to be.  Some are overflowing with it and others have to resort to parasitic behavior to attain it.

Easy - bear with a chainsaw! :-P

I think if I were Dracular and someone said to me "Okay, you can't be a terrifying abomination in the eyes of God and man anymore. You can't control minds, enthral whole communities or exube an aura of terror in anyone within a ten mile radios. Also, no more shape shifting, defiling, murder, torture or general badness. Instead you have to a twinkling, teenage, metro-sexual that young girls will fall in love in. So start learning to write poetry or play piano or something." my response would be "Uh, I'll just starve to death, thanks."

Not that I would personally say no to becoming a Twightlight style Vampire, mind you. Immortality, obscene attractiveness and a super power? Yes please.

The energy feeders had me going for a while, basically for the reasons you say; natural energy, we're natural, sure, why not? I can believe it's possible.

But some of psedu-science I've seen spouted about it convinced me otherwise. This culminated when a founder of one of these communities, who had written several "scientific" articles on the subject, tried to tell me that the energy transference they experience is "instant." Not "nearly instant" or "practically instant", but in direct contrast to the natural world that supposedly supports their existence, just flat "instant."

Yeah, whatever buddy. The laws of physics didn't break themselves just for you. Maybe I'd just stumbled into a large group of idiots, but there's only so much bs I'm willing to humour.

The "laws of physics" have been know to change a lot in the last 500 years. Do you really think we know EVERYTHING?

The "laws of physics" haven't changed at all. That's why they are the laws of physics: the clue is in the name /wink

Our understanding of these physical laws - our scientific theories explaining the how and why of them - has changed as the body of available experimental data and analysis develops.

Sounds like a bit of a nightmare? It was – literally. Owen Davies explains that "sleep paralysis" is relatively common, occurring in 20-45% of people. More rarely (about 5-20% of people), sleep paralysis can be combined with a nightmare. This is no mere bad dream. It might include hallucinations and a powerful sense of an alien presence in your room. One soldier, who had fought for 13 consecutive months in Korea, stated of his single nightmare attack: "Never, before or since, have I experienced the fear of that night."

A pattern emerges... My educated guess would be that the night is dark and full of terrors.

And they are all sleep paralysis.

The laws of physics never change, we just find new ones sometimes. :) If energy were capable of instant transference then the universe would never have been created. If it somehow had still come into existence then, by the current definition, all of time would have stopped immediately.

To quote a physicist friend of mine, who has conducted research all over the globe, including at the LHC: "Entropy is a b***h."

If one were to develop a way of (directed) instant transference then this would have little practical value beyond making things blow up, disintegrate or briefly catch alight.

And no, I am not willing to accept that spontaneous combustion is caused by Vampires. But that's a discussion for another time...

To further add to this - teberculosis is believed to play it's part in the Vampire myth. People would dream of a recently deceased person suffocating them, as above, and it is thought this dream was brought on by problems breathing due to TB. People would then rush out to exhume the body and find the previously mentioned 'Vampire corpse'.
