This thing (http://cryptozoo.monstrous.com/the_giant_squid.htm) was caught on tape, alive.

Coming from a fishing community, I have heard stories but a real tape? Has it been proven to be an un-edited tape?

Yup. Gen-U-wine article. Caught on camera by a Japanese research team I seem to recall. It eventually lost one of its tentacles which was recovered and is being studied.

That's awesome. Are they going to eat it?

A 60 ft specimen was discovered off New Zealand in 1851 - it would have provided enough calamari to feed 2000 people

Another giant squid has just gone on display at London's Natural History Museum. Thirty feet long, caught alive by a trawler fishing at depths of around 700 ft, off the Falkland Islands (South Atlantic) in March 2004. Nicknamed "Archie" (the species' scientific tag is Architeuthis dux ), his full story is available at HERE (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/about-us/news/2006/feb/news_5255.html)

I love the Giant Squid (good ol' archie). It is the cryptozoologists dream come true, an almost fantastic beasty with little to no proof of existence is proven true. The unique thing about the Giant Squid, however, is that there have been bodies of rather large squid for a long time. True giant squids (like the one in the video) don't appear, but rather massive ones are still found all the time. That and beaks (about the only hard part of a squid) are also regularly found, from which size can be infered. But this video is just too freaking cool.

The giant squid is by no means the largest known. Several other species, including the colossal squid Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, are thought to grow larger.

WHOOOAAAAAAA!!!! Colossal squid! Awesome

Tonight on Discovery they are doing a show on the Colossal squid including live video. The original video in this thread was filmed in 2004 by a Japanese researcher & is in fact the first footage of a live giant squid in the water. While it would seem a boon for calamari lovers, the ammonia in the animal makes the flesh totally unedible.
