What the Heck is a Korrigan??
« on: August 10, 2006, 07:44:30 AM »
English Wikipedia says...
In Breton folklore, a Korrigan is a female fairy or dwarf-like spirit. Korr means dwarf and ig is a diminutive and the suffix an is an hypocoristic.

Korrigans have beautiful hair and red flashing eyes. They are sometimes described as important princesses or druidesses who were opposed to Christianity when the Apostles came to convert Brittany. They hate priests, churches, and especially the Virgin Mary. They can predict the future, change shape, and move at lightning speed. Like sirens and mermaids, they sing and comb their long hair, and they haunt fountains and wells. They have the power of making men fall in love with them, but they then kill the ones who do. In many popular tales, they are eager to deceive the imprudent mortals who see them dancing or looking after a treasure, and fond of stealing human children, substituting them with changelings. On the night of 31st October (All Souls' Night), they are said to be lurking near dolmens, waiting for victims.

Hope this works. Its a translated wikipedia from some other country.
(Copy and past the url into Google and click translate.)

They say they are Goblins! Our Monstrous Faerie Gallery (On the site, not the forums.) Shows them as what #2 says they are, I want to find out more about them, but its kind of weird if there are two differnt Faeries named after them. :x

According to:
'A Complete Guide To Faeries & Magical Beings' by Cassandra Eason.
Corrigan/korrigan is a Breton maiden faery sometimes associated with former pagan princesses or Druidesses who were beautiful by night, but hideous by day. They live near sacred fountains, in grottoes and in woodland groves.

Sorry, I can't be of anymore help here. I'm not familiar with korrigans.

'A Complete Guide To Faeries & Magical Beings' by Cassandra Eason: has a huge listing of mystical beings, but I dare say that it falls short on being a complete guide. There are no pictures at all. It doesn't give specifics such as sizes on most of the listings. It rehashes alot of the fluff that alot of us have become familiar with since childhood. I noticed more than a faint resemblance to Grimm's fairytales.

I just read this old thread called Korrigans and Stuff.
It's interesting and has other definition of Korrigan/corrigans.

So, now I would like to know the answer to your original question...
What the heck is a Korrigan???

Maybe korrigan is a catch-all word like fairy for wee beings in certain countries?

I'm sure I read somewhere that Korrigans are basically a more powerful version of other faeries, more mischevious, but more skilled, and probably wiser.  :-)
