How about an Egyptian one:
When a rebellion against Ra occurred, he called upon Sekhmet to aid him. She did, and savagely mauled the entire army. For fear of the human race, Ra devised a plan to stop her slaughter. On the battlefield, he put seven thousand jugs of beer and pomegranate juice. Mistaking these for blood, Sekhmet drank them all, and became too drunk to continue the slaughter. While she slept, Ra turned her into a lion. Ra then told the humans to celebrate their lives by having a feast, where lion was to be served. From there on, they had a celebration that day, where all people were able to become drunk, for seven thousand jugs had to be drank, and a lion to be feasted on. Granted that they could hardly, if ever, find a lion to feast on.

That one will always be a favorite of mine.

I've never heard of that one, & I love Egypt. Is it a famous story? :?

Ruayda

It is not one of the better known stories...but then again, it seems that if it isn't part of the Auset-Asuar-Heru-Setekh myth, it is not really known anymore. Sad times, sad times.

Probably the most horrible myth of punishment I can recall is from Greek mythology:

The hunter Actaeon came across the goddess Artemis as she was bathing in pond. He was overcome by her ravishing beauty. As he approached for a closer look, he snapped a twig underfoot, alerting the goddess to his presence. For his affrontery, Artemis transformed him into a stag, and his pack of hunting dogs tore him to pieces.
