Title: The last horror movie you saw?
Post by: Phantom Stranger on August 15, 2006, 02:43:33 PM
Hey gang,

Well, I'm going to be nosy and ask What was the last horror/monster  film you saw? Be it classic or modern, excellent or grade z cheese. . So crank up the DVD/VHS players or head on down to the local theater and lets see what everyone is watching. Here's my list for the last couple of weeks:

Horror Express-Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing
Between Two Worlds (1944) John Garfield
The Descent (2006)
The Fog (2005)
Creature From The Black Lagoon
Godzilla: Final Wars
House Of Dark Shadows

Pulse"

Not a bad movie, but not great either. kind of a modern "B" movie. I've never seen the original Japenese film so I don't know if it's better or worse, but it was a decent film.

"The Return Of Dracula" (1958)
- Francis Lederer

Fun little low budget film, in which Dracula leaves Europe and comes to a small American town. Very enjoyable.

Where to begin....

When I was in Montreal a week or so ago, my friend and I had a horror movie-a-thon when we weren't out and about in the city.

But I'll just stick to this weeks viewings  :-D

The Thing (1982)
The Descent (2005) - Just arrived in theatres here.
Blood Feast (1963)
Dagon (2001)
Dead And Buried (1981)
The Dead Pit (1989)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Prom Night (1980)
Eight Legged Freaks (2002)
Gothika (2003)
House on Haunted Hill (1959)
Idle Hands (1999)
American Psycho (2000)
Nightbreed (1990)
Maximum Overdrive (1986)
Altered States (1980)
Night of the Demon (1980) - Not to be mistaken with Night of the Demons, a totally different movie altogether.  This one deals with a mutant sasquatch.

And if Exploitation films are to be included:

Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
Ilsa - She Wolf of the SS
Ilsa - The Wicked Warden
Ilsa - Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks

The Ed Gein movie a couple of nights ago; last night I watched the final interview with Ted Bundy (Natural Porn Killers, I think), but it was more documentary than movie.

You could either take that as a compliment, because she was voluptuous, or you could take it as a compliment, because she was a Woman In Power....lol

Truly awful movie about a scientest turning people into King Cobras.  Avoid it at all costs.

Well...I wouldn't say "Pulse" was good, but it's just that I've seen so many horror films that were far,far worse that it didn't  seem so bad by comparison.  It's an okay movie. Now to be perfectly honest I went with 3 friends, and 2 of them thought it was awful.

"Dracula" (1979)
         -Frank Langella

I remember seing this movie when it first played in theaters and I thought it was a fine film and I still think it is. IMO it's much better then the early '90's Coppola film

"The Cave" (2005)

I  also saw this movie in theaters last year. I thought  it was a decent film, Not  nearly as good as this years, similarly themed "The Descent", but still fun to watch

Dracula" (1973?)
-Jack Palance
Produced and directed by Dan Curtis (creator of "Dark Shadows")
A very interesting and different version of the classic novel. I believe this is the first movie to mix the historical Dracula with the vampire count, and it also adds in the reincarnated love story that was later used in the Coppola version. (which of course, was a major plot line in "Dark Shadows)

"Hand Of Death"
                -John Agar

Classic slice of 1950's grade Z cheese. Agar plays a scirntest trying to create a "hypnotic nerve gas". When the experiment  backfires, he becomes a horrible monster, whose very touch can kill. Hysterically funny. The perfect movie if you want to perform your own version of "Mystery Science Theater 3000"

Population 436 (2006) - I think this may be Fred Durst's real first role in a movie, he doesn't do to bad of a job either.
The Wicker Man (1973) - What can I say about this awesome film other than it was FREAKIN' AWESOME!!
Dawn of the Dead (1978) - I had to break in my new widescreen LCD TV with a classic. :-D
Dawn of the Dead (2004) - Zombies should NEVER run.....EVER!!

I enjoyed the film, it's just that IF rotting zombies were to ever walk this earth for real, I'd like for them to be slow and almost at a snails pace.....The fast ones just creep me the Hell out.

Rose Red was a complete rip-off of The Haunting, and nowhere near as atmospheric or well-written. Storm of the Century was another of his bloated beached whales, too.

King has a terrible problem - has always had it - of having fantastic ideas that make great short stories and novellas... then smothering them in dross, quasi-Kerouac prose and frankly dull padding.  His days as a struggling magazine hack, being paid by the word, teaching and working in a laundry while living in a trailer to make ends meet, obviously affected him - he writes 66% more in each novel than is necessary or interesting. His artistic control over the movies ensures that they transfer to the screen in all their obscenely overweight blubberiness, like some out of retirement boxer who can't shake the flab and punches well below his weight.

Add to that his constant... shall we call it "recycling"?... of his own and other people's plot ideas - snoozerama  :|

He's not alone - Clive Barker can't carry off a full-length novel 8 times out of ten, either. His sin with the movies is completely the other end of the spectrum, however: surrendering all control over them. Hence the terrible Hellraiser series (oh, how I mourned the death of The Hellbound Heart from his Books of Blood... )

H.P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon (1994) - Jeffery Combs looks absolutely nothing like himself in this film, as he takes on the role of H.P. Lovecraft himself.  This movie is an anthology and consists of 3 other stories, all revolving around the Book of the Dead, besides the one that Combs stars in.

i agree, i was so disappointed in it...but it was based on a video game done by the same guy whose ruined other great games by making their movies...blood rayne, house of the dead etc...a lot of game fans are really not fond of him.

demons bah, they looked like geiger alien rip offs...now those were scary.   :-o

demonic, i thought tom savini would save it...not!

next will be do you like hitchcock, a murder/suspense by dargentino with a high compliment by fangoria, i'm hoping it won't let me down...it'll be a sad day when he does.  ;)

"The Car" (1977)
-James Brolin

Have you ever seen a movie and thought it was bad, but a few years later you see it again and think, "That wasn't as bad as I remember", well..."The Car" ain't one of those films, Almost 30 years since I last saw this thing and it's still a heaping load of crap. A decent cast toatally wasted in this god awful film. How it escaped "Mystery Science Theater 3000" I'll never know. Bad, really bad.

I recently watched “American Psycho” for the first time.  I laughed my way through the whole movie!  American Psycho shouldn’t be taken seriously as a slasher film, nor do I believe it was a sad commentary on the decade of the 80’s, in which the film takes place.  It is a great film, though, one I highly recommend.

The movie is about the fragile mental state of Patrick Bateman, played deliciously, wryly, and with zest, by Christian Bale (Batman Begins).  His breakdown could happen in any decade, as we all know too well by constant real life headlines that report serial murder.  As the movie opens, we find out that Patrick works at his father’s firm as some kind of stock executive.  He has a classy office with a view, a spotless stainless steel kitchen in a trendy apartment with overstuffed furniture, and skin conditioners in the bathroom to keep his face looking its pristine best.  In his world revolves a motley crew of cynical and wealthy circle of friends and co-workers who seemingly do nothing but go to endless luncheons, dinners, and parties with plenty of coke, booze, and affairs to go around.  This is the three ring circus where Patrick starts to mentally dissolve.

After stabbing a homeless man for stinking and not having a job, he axes to death an annoying co-worker named Paul Allen (candy-assed played by Jared Leto),  all the while running a monologue on the merits of Huey Lewis and The News.  Talking a lot about the wonderful majesty of 1980’s rock like Lewis, Whitney Houston, Genesis, Phil Collins, and others while gleefully cutting up whores with chainsaws and knives is a signature in this film that has hilarious results.  Nobody but Christian Bale could’ve played this part, the guy is so good.  Did I mention he’s retentive about not having a coaster down when company sets a drink down on his glass top table?  That knowledge alone could save or get a person killed depending on what they do.

As things proceed, a Detective inquires about the disappearance of the axed Paul Allen.  Where was Patrick the night of Paul’s disappearance?  One would think this would slow Patrick down on his murdering, but no, he keeps it up with gusto, adding whores to his blood list after banging them into submission in his swanky apartment.  When he gets his secretary (played by Chloe Sevigny) to go out on a date with him, he opens the fridge to offer her some ice cream which is sitting by the plastic wrapped head of a model he dated, then decapitated.  It’s moments like these that the director wants you to smile at and smile I did.  It’s all about horrifying tongue-in-cheek gallows humor and I loved it.  There’s plenty of blood and gore in this movie.  I won’t spoil the movie by commenting more, but if you want to be riveted by some great performances, see this movie or check out the trailer at http://www.horror-stew.com/AmericanPsycho/index.html. 8-)

"Doomsday"

Wow, I haven't seen so complete a rip off of "Escape From New York" since, well..."Escape From LA".
Actually it's not a complete rip off of "New York" it also steals from "Mad Max" and "Resident Evil" and a little bit of George Romero's "Knight Riders" too.
But you know what's kind of funny about all of this. The movie is actually entertaining.I guess when you take the best parts from other films and blend them all together you can't help but come up with something fun.
A modern "B" movie with a truly beautiful leading lady.

"Fiend Without A Face" (1958)
-Marshall Thompson

An American military base in Canada is developing a missile control system based on nuclear energy and is facing problem with the people from the nearby town. When four locals, including the Mayor, are killed, Major Jeff Cummings (Marshall Thompson) is in charge of the investigation. When the coroner examines the one of the corpse, he finds that the brain and spinal chord was sucked out and Major Cummings defines the creature as a mental vampire. He looks for Prof. R. E. Walgate (Kynaston Reeves), a retired scientist that lives in town, and he discloses the scary secret.

another fun 1950's radioactive monster movie. Lots of fun. good stop motion FX.

The Wax House (1954)

Great remake of the House of Wax made in 1938 quite possibly one of the best horror movies of early 20th century.
Vincent Price is the absolutely amazing evil person who puts real people into wax sculptures.  (One of his very best)
I believe that it is now a public domain film that is available by several different companies on DVD, one of which has both The Wax House and the original House of Wax.  Fun for all of you old horror movie buffs, much better than the newest remake.

"Murder By Decree" (1979)
-Christopher Plummer, James Mason

Plot Synopsis: IMDB
Sherlock Holmes is drawn into the case of Jack the Ripper who is killing prostitutes in London's East End. Assisted by Dr. Watson, and using information provided by a renowned psychic, Robert Lees, Holmes finds that the murders may have its roots in a Royal indiscretion and that a cover-up is being managed by politicians at the highest level, all of whom happen to be Masons. Homes races to save the life of Annie Crook who has been forcibly incarcerated in an insane asylum and that of her friend Mary Kelly, in whom she has entrusted her secret.

Phantom's Review: One of the best Sherlock Holmes movies ever made. Great cast, Fine acting, and a superb story. I love this movie.

"The Giant Claw" (1957)

Synopsis: IMDB
When electronics engineer Mitch MacAfee spots a UFO as "big as a battleship," from his plane, the Air Force scrambles planes to investigate. However, nothing shows up on radar, and one of the jets is lost during the action. MacAfee is regarded as a dangerous crackpot until other incidents and disappearances convince the authorities that the threat is real. Some believe it is a French-Canadian folk legend come to life, but it turns out to be an extraterrestrial giant bird composed of anti-matter whose disregard for human life and architecture threatens the world.

Phantom's review: This is the Cadillac of schlock. Hysterically funny looking monster,( looks like a cross between a turkey buzzard and a muppett.) Over the top acting and a goofy plot. I love it.

mirrors, since it's advertised up top

it was good, i like how they kept to the spook story and didn't twist it into some psychological thriller with the main villian being the main character with a severe mental disorder.

those story lines are getting old, they need to bring it back to what made horror horror, uncontrollable forces, not something that can be treated with proper physician care.

"The Son Of Dr. Jekyll" (1957)

Plot: IMDB
The son of the notorious Dr. Henry Jekyll is determined to prove that his father's reputation has been unjustly deserved. He sets out to develop his father's formula in order to prove that he was a brilliant scientist rather than a murderous monster.

Phantom's Review: Well made, but ultimately dull sequel to the horror classic. The acting, sets and costumes are fine but the film has no real scare scenes and moves very slowly. A disappointment.

I just saw "The Haunting in Connecticut" & was pretty impressed. Although there were a lot of artistic liberties taken with the plot as far as the true story the lead actor was very good in a very difficult role. I can't say it was scary since I knew the whole story going in but it was worth the watch.

'A Haunting in Connecticut'

Better than expected ghost story. Based loosely on true events. I enjoyed it.

"Friday The 13th" (2009)

Exactly as expected. I got a few laughs out of it, but nothing more.

"The Fog" (1980)

One of my favorite John Carpenter films.

"The Fog" (2005)

I don't know why everyone hated this remake. It's not that bad. Not as good as the original, but as far as remakes go, it was all right

I know, I like alot of the older movies better, even without the special effects........PLOT DAMNIT, a good movie neads a farking plot, not just a bunch of carnage, not that Im at all aposed to carnage, but I nead to know why limbs are being riped off.

Kadesh: No, I haven't. Is it hilarious too??"

It wasn't funny at all.It was a good clasic wolverine flick. My favorite part was in the beginning when the main character turned into a werewolf in slow motion.

Ok,well here's what I've watched this week

Phantasm

From Dusk Till dawn(funny/bloody vampire flick with quentin t&george cloony)

Carnival of souls
(Creepy flick with a wild twist at the end)

The last man on earth with Vincent Price
(Old school zombie film not gory at all but horrendous in the desparity of the mans routine)

The Toxic Avenger
(Funny gore comedy)

Camp Sleep Away
(Cheesy thriller but overall very good)

"Werewolves: The Dark Survivors" (2009)

Made for cable TV movie. (showing on Animal Planet of all places)
Faux documentary (shot like a true crime show) about a cop and a zoologist investigating a murder and how it leads them into the shadowy world of modern day werewolves.

Surprisingly decent take on the werewolf legend. Tries to be realistic even with such a fantastic subject. I enjoyed it.

I just happen to like the second more than the first.

No I liked the 1st Halloween Rob Zombie recreated.Part 2 was a waste of time and money. It was horrible. The ending was lame. The whole damn movie was lame. The coolest part was when the main character was wearing a black flag shirt. How could Rob Zombie spare the cheerleader daughter of the Sherif just to kill her off in a lame ass fashion?
So what?I'll tell you what. Its your opinion but it makes me question if you have seen the originals...Saying you like part 2 over 1 is like saying you like freddy versus jason than the actual movies themselves...

Saw 'Orphan'.  I hate movies like that. I think the last "horror" movie I saw, (good or bad) was '100 feet'. Not really scary but the part where the booty call gets pulverised, grossed me out big time.  I work in the medical field and its like I can feel every bone breaking as I watch it. Ewww! :|

28 Days Later, I really enjoyed it because the idea of a highly contagious virus that causes people to become enraged instead of hungry undead seems more plausible.

A horror movie only starts to become scary when it has a slightly realistic scenario.

Yeh not all that possible but close...

It's not that it was messed up, we didn't like it because of the bad directing and the horrible acting. And the racism... "Help us, are friends are missing!!!" "Calm down, what do they look like?" "White." xD

If it made you feel uncomfortable then it did its job.  After all, there is more to horror than blood and guts.

Good point Muerte but this went beyond what was necessary. I will admit that I have personal reasons for the discomfort but 6 minutes of a girl being raped isn't right, 3 minutes would have been just as uncomfortable & not nearly as inappropriate.
Title: Re: The last horror movie you saw?
Post by: Muerte on January 04, 2010, 04:53:32 PM
Given, but to touch upon reality, how long would an actual rape last, 6 minutes?  Not condoning such a thing, but perhaps it was the directors intent to show everyone the vileness of the act.  After all, we all hear about rapes in passing on the news, or through the grapevines of our individual cities, but one has to admit, due to the frequency of the act, it has almost become the norm.  A truth, very few people truly care, but once they have an exposure to it, then it becomes more real, it becomes something that people will, as a whole, attempt to stop.
Title: Re: The last horror movie you saw?
Post by: Muerte on January 06, 2010, 11:43:41 AM
I saw the remake, and I kinda agree about the rape scene. But it didn't bother me nearly as badly as the one in Watchmen. That one reminded me too much of a real life situation... my bf and I left the theater because he knew what it was doing to me.

"Pandorum" last night. Science fiction movie with cyberpunk elements along with survival horror elements.

Intro: In the twenty-second century, Earth's population reaches extreme numbers (over 20 billion) and the planet has been ravaged by war over resources. Humanity then sends its last hope into space: 60,000 men and women strapped in suspended animation in a sleeper ship named the Elysium with for destination the newly-discovered earth-like planet Tanis located at 123 years of travel from home. During the trip, two men wake up, apparently for their shift, but their third team member is missing and nobody's there to welcome them. They suffer from mild memory loss and only know who they are by their nametags and tattoos that show they're part of flight team #5.

In my opinion, the story was brilliant.

The reviews, however, were varied; some say the plot's "bloated" and "derivative". I can see where that comes from, but somehow, it seemed to fit the setting. They're traveling through a gargantuan ship haunted by mutants; there's no way the story's going to be straightforward without plot twists and changing plans. I'm thankful it's not another regular survival horror movies Hollywood loves so much.

If you like the cyberpunk "high tech, low life" settings, you'll love it. If you just like sci-fi in general, you'll probably love it also. All in all, I recommend watching it.

I want to see the new "The Wolfman" movie

Pros:
Seen it. And hannibal lecter as the wolfman = awesome!
Action scenes- acceptable
Real great sense of when to pop things out on ya.

GOT TO SEE IT (almost )ALONE IN AN EMPTY THEATER!!! I ALMOST CRAPPED Myself.  the only people who were there were like two or three couples making out/cuddling in the back.

Cons:
The line between man and beast is touched but not thoroughly explored.
and they have surprise infection at the end......Lame.... (though the idiot deserves it, acting like a beast himself and not using his head. and it gives room for a sequel)
Curse origin is somewhat iffy.
feral kids do not look like golum's lady.

Saw it by myself..... that in itself is sad to the extreme

I've seen this Korean(Japanese? Can't remember) horror movie. It is all about a room, who ever venture that place, they end up suiciding by dropping themselves out from the apartment after getting out from the room.

And all because of the "typical" 7-12 year old scary looking girl.

Halloween II (2009) - Not as disturbing as the first remake, but still pretty scary if not more.

"Fantastic Voyage" (1966)
                -Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch
Plot: IMDB
Scientist Jan Benes, who knows the secret to keeping soldiers shrunken for an indefinite period, escapes from behind the Iron Curtain with the help of CIA agent Grant. While being transferred, their motorcade is attacked. Benes strikes his head, causing a blood clot to form in his brain. Grant is ordered to accompany a group of scientists as they are miniaturized. The crew has one hour to get in Benes's brain, remove the clot and get out.

Phantom's Review: Slow moving, but highly entertaining sci-fi adventure. Interesting story, good acting and Oscar winning special FX, and , of course....Raquel Welch, the most gorgeous woman in movie history.  A really good movie.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" (2011)
                                   -Robert Downey jr, Jude Law

Plot: IMDB
Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.) and his longtime trusted associate, Doctor Watson (Jude Law), take on their arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), with the help of Holmes's older brother Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) and a gypsy named Sim (Noomi Rapace).

Phantom's Review: First, let me say, I'm a huge Holmes fan. I've read all the original stories and novels, seen dozens of films, collect the comic book, etc,. So when Downey Jr's version of Holmes hit theaters a couple of years ago I was just a bit curious about this new grungier action hero Holmes. Much to my surprise, I thought it was pretty damn good, and the sequel is even better. it follows the same style as the first one, but has a much better villain and a more interesting story. A rare sequel that's even better than the first.

"Whiteout" (2009)
                    -Kate Beckinsale

Plot: IMDB
U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko is three days from the end of her tour at an international research station in Antarctica after which she'll resign. An incident from her past haunts her. The continent's first winter storm is coming when a body, wearing no gear, is discovered in the tundra. She investigates, soon finds more bodies, and must find a motive and a murderer before the storm and her departure. A U.N. agent, Robert Pryce, appears, seemingly out of nowhere, to help. An aging physician about to retire, a nervous mission chief, a downed Soviet plane, and the weather's deadly elements add to the story.

Phantom's Review: The absolutely gorgeous Kate Beckinsale stars in a pretty standard murder mystery. Beckinsale and the rest of the cast do their best  with the material, but except for the location, most of this film is unoriginal. Not bad, if your a mystery fan, but not all that great either.

"The Mummy" (1959)
                       -Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee

Plot: IMDB:   In the 1890s a team of British archaeologists discover the untouched tomb of Princess Ananka but accidentally bring the mummified body of her High Priest back to life. Three years later back in England a follower of the same Egyptian religion unleashes the mummy to exact grisly revenge on the despoilers of the sacred past.

Phantom's Review: My personal favorite "Mummy" movie. A little more fast paced than the Karloff classic, but not an "Indiana Jones" style movie like the Brendan Frasier version. Good FX and make up. Stylish sets and costumes (of course, it's Hammer Films) and fine acting from the cast.
A highly entertaining movie.

The Wicker Tree 2011.

After four decades Robin Hardy is releasing, not a reboot or official sequel follow up to The Wickerman- The Wicker Tree- based upon his novel of the name "Cowboys and Christ" he brings to our screens what stirred a cult following back in 1973.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8etQKSZcHEY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8etQKSZcHEY)

The Wicker Tree: Young Christians Beth and Steve, a gospel singer and her cowboy boyfriend, leave Texas to preach door-to-door in Scotland . When, after initial abuse, they are welcomed with joy and elation to Tressock, the border fiefdom of Sir Lachlan Morrison, they assume their hosts simply want to hear more about Jesus. How innocent and wrong they are.

Interesting watch.

"The Town That Dreaded Sundown" (1976)
-Ben Johnson
Plot: IMDB

A Texas Ranger hunts for a hooded serial killer terrorizing the residents of a small town, set in 1946 Texas. Loosely based on a true story.

Phantom's Review: I remember seeing this film in theaters way back in '76 and thinking it was a pretty good thriller, well..36 years have passed and time has not been kind to this film. With the exception of star Ben Johnson (who had been making movies for about 40 years at this time) most of the actors seem amateurish. The attempts at humor fall completely flat and their is absolutely no suspense. Actress Dawn Wells (of "Gilligan's Island" fame) has a small part as one of the victims and she does a good job, but is in the film for a very short time. Overall, my memory of this movie was a lot better than the actual film.

"The Woman In Black" (2012)
                             -Daniel Radcliffe

Plot: IMDB
A young lawyer travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.

Phantom's Review:  This is a terrific, old fashioned ghost story. Instead of the sledge hammer shocks and gore that most modern day horror films go for, this film opts for a slow build up of suspense. This film has excellent atmosphere and a couple of good scares. Daniel Radcliffe does a great job as the young lawyer  If you like classic style ghost stories, I think you'll like this film, I know I did.

"Godzilla 2000"

Plot: IMDB

Godzilla saves Tokyo from a flying saucer that transforms into the beast Orga.

Phantom's Review: First "Godzilla" film after that wretched American film was made, brings the Big G back home where he belongs. Plenty of monster action, a very cool looking "Godzilla" costume and a basic plot make this an entertaining film. Not the greatest "Godzilla" movie, but certainly not the worst.

                         -Craig Stevens

Plot: IMDB
A giant prehistoric praying mantis, recently freed from the Arctic ice, voraciously preys on American military at the Dew Line and works its way south.

Phantom's Review: Wonderfully corny, 1950's monster movie. Decent FX, plenty of stock footage to pad out the film and a monster that sounds just like "Spot" from "The Munsters".  A total blast.

"Psycho" (1960)
              -Anthony Perkins

Plot: IMDB
Phoenix officeworker Marion Crane is fed up with the way life has treated her. She has to meet her lover Sam in lunch breaks and they cannot get married because Sam has to give most of his money away in alimony. One Friday Marion is trusted to bank $40,000 by her employer. Seeing the opportunity to take the money and start a new life, Marion leaves town and heads towards Sam's California store. Tired after the long drive and caught in a storm, she gets off the main highway and pulls into The Bates Motel. The motel is managed by a quiet young man called Norman who seems to be dominated by his mother.

Phantom's Review: Screenwriter Joseph Stefano and Director Alfred Hitchcock take Robert Bloch's novel and create what is arguably the greatest suspense thriller of all time. Perfectly cast, acted and filmed. this movie is damn near perfect. The last shot of Anthony Perkins staring at you is still terrifying. Very few films are truly worthy of the label "Classic", but this is a true classic from start to finish.

Plot: IMDB

Phantom's Review: Entertaining prequel. The plot is basically the same as the first two films, but with a little faster pacing. Some good "BOO" scenes and the actors do a fine job, but this whole documentary style "found footage" type of movie is starting to wear a bit thin for me. Overall, a decent film.

Phantom's Review: Awesome. I loved this movie. Forget all the bad press and negative reviews, this is a fun old fashioned Sci-Fi movie. Good FX and a fun story. It makes me want to go and Re-Read all the novels again

"The Thing" (2011)

Plot: IMDB

At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson. While Dr. Halvorson keeps to his research, Kate partners with Sam Carter, a helicopter pilot, to pursue the alien life form.

Phantom's Review: Decent, if totally unneeded, prequel to the John Carpenter classic. The main problem with prequels is you pretty much know how there going to end, unless of course, there set decades or centuries before (like the 3rd "Underworld" movie). This film tries to recreate the paranoid atmosphere the Carpenter film had, and does okay. Decent FX and acting make this an enjoyable time waster, but if you want a really good monster movie, watch the 1982 John Carpenter film, that's a modern era classic.

The Night Stalker" (1972)
                        -Darren McGavin

Plot: IMDB

Carl Kolchak is a newspaper reporter with an abrasive personality that has gotten him fired ten times from various big-city papers. Now he's reduced to reporting for a relatively small-time paper in Las Vegas. It's here he gets the story of his life. But will the local sheriff, or the D.A., or even his own boss, let him print it? He has an ally in the FBI agent brought in to investigate this strange case. It seems someone is biting the necks of young girls and draining their blood. Can this killer with supernormal powers really be a 70-year-old Rumanian millionaire? Can he really be a vampire? And can an aging reporter do anything to stop him?

Phantom's Review: One of TV's best horror films. Produced by Dan Curtis' (Dark Shadows) and starring Darren McGavin in one of his best roles. A great blend of classic vampire story with modern day sensibilities. (at least for 1972). Good atmosphere, acting and story. a classic.

Captain Kronos-Vampire Hunter (1974)

Kronos' search leads him to the Durward estate where he is met by the effete children of the apparently aged and sick Lady Durward.

Phantom's review: Probably the last great film from the original version of Hammer Films. A very underrated film. Great action, plenty of atmosphere and an different take on the vampire legend. Sadly the proposed series of films never happened. It would have been interesting to see where they took the series.

                                  _David Carradine

Plot: IMDB
New York police are bemused by a spate of reports of a giant flying lizard that has been spotted around the rooftops of New York, which they assume to be bogus until the lizard starts to eat people. An out-of-work, ex-con piano player is the only person who knows the location of the monster's nest and is determined to turn the knowledge to his advantage, but will his gamble pay off or will he end up as lizard food?

Phantom's Review: I remember seeing this film in theaters back in the early '80's and thinking what a piece of crap. Well thirty years have passed and I got to see it again recently and "what do you know" ......it's still a piece of crap. Terrible acting, even from good actors, average plot and the title monster is rarely seen. Perfect for a bad movie night.

"The Pirates! Band Of Misfits" (2012)
--------Hugh Grant

Plot: IMDB
After years of humiliation and failed attempts to win the coveted Pirate of the Year Award, Pirate Captain and his oddball crew take on the cream of the pirating crop - Black Bellamy, Peg Leg Hastings and Cutlass Liz - in a race to pillage the most booty. They soon cross paths with lovelorn scientist Charles Darwin, who persuades the Captain that the crew's prized 'parrot', Polly, could be the answer to the 'untold riches' they are searching for. Their adventure takes them to Victorian London where they meet Darwin's sidekick 'man-panzee' Mister Bobo, and the notorious pirate-hating Queen Victoria herself. It soon unfolds that Darwin's motives for helping the crew are not what they seem, and the Queen has an evil hidden agenda of her own. The Pirate Captain must choose between basking in the glory of being crowned Pirate of the Year, or staying faithful to his trusted crew.

Phantom's Review: Wonderfully funny animated film from the folks that brought you "Chicken Run" and "Wallace And Gromitt". Well written and funny story, though it does get a little dark  towards the end (sort of like "Toy Story 3") good voice acting and some truly well made animation. Lots of little sight gags fill the film and make it even more enjoyable. Go see it if your in the mood for fun.

"Dracula" (1974)

Plot: You know, if you don't know the plot of "Dracula" what are you doing at a horror site?

Phantom's Review: Well made, if not great version of the Bram Stoker classic. Jack Palance is perfectly cast as the count. If I remember right this was the first Dracula film to directly tie in the Vlad The Impaler legend with vampire story and Palance really does seem like an old warrior. Produced and directed by Dan Curtis, the film does occasionally feel like a large episode of "Dark Shadows"but it still is a worthwhile effort.

Plot: IMDB
Young Jim Hawkins is the only one who can sucessfully get a schooner to a legendary Island known for buried Treasure. But aboard the ship is a mysterious cook named John Silver, whose true motivation on the journey challenges Jim's trust in the entire crew.

Phantom's Review: Decent, if a bit overly long version of the Stevenson classic. All the actors do a fine job and it's nice to see a wide range of accents among the pirates, but a four hours the film tends to drag in a few places. Not a very faithful adaptation, but still worth a viewing.

"Dark Shadows" (2012)
               -Johnny Depp

Plot: After almost 200 years of sleep, vampire Barnabas Collins reawakens in 1972 to battle the evil (but gorgeous) witch who cursed him, help his descendents rebuild their fortune, find his lost love and generally deal with the strange new world he now finds himself in.

Phantom's Review: First, let me say I love the original "Dark Shadows", been a fan for decades, so when I first heard that Depp and Burton were going to do a film version I got very excited I'm a fan of them and I like their style, but then I saw the first few previews and I saw a comedy not a Gothic Horror movie, but I went and saw it anyway and much to my surprise I loved it. The film does have some comedic moments, but they seem natural since they mostly deal with Barnabas trying to figure out his new world. There are some really decent BOO! scenes, great FX and the film really tries to keep the atmosphere and spirit (no pun intended) of the original show. The whole cast does a great job with their characters. My only main complaint is a late film reveal about the Carolyn character that really goes nowhere and the original "Dark Shadows" music is only barely hinted at in the soundtrack. Outside of that really enjoyed this film.

I would like to stress something that I seem to have accidentally omitted from my original review. While I thoroughly enjoyed this film, I want to say that "Dark Shadows" 2012 is definitely NOT a carbon copy of the original series or movie. This is a different take on the familiar themes. Depp and Burton have taken the essence, the spirit (theirs that pun again) of the original show and put their own spin on it. Some characters are very different from the originals, most notably "Victoria Winters" and "Maggie Evans" and some characters remain true to form. This is a remake after all, and most remakes do some things differently. If you are a die hard purist of the original, you might not like this new take, but if your like me and can enjoy this film on it's own merits I think you'll enjoy it.

"It Came From Beneath The Sea" (1955)
                                                   -Kenneth Tobey

Plot: IMDB
A Giant Octopus, whose feeding habits have been affected by radiation from H-Bomb tests, rises from the Mindanao Deep to terrorize the California Coast.

Phantom's Review: One of those great fun 1950's monster movies.

-- The stop-motion animation by Ray Harryhausen is excellent, despite the fact that the movie's low budget made the octopus have six tentacles instead of eight.
The cast is lead by 50's sci-fi regulars Kenneth Tobey (The Thing From Another World, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms), Faith Domergue (This Island Earth) and Donald Curtis (Earth vs the Flying Saucers). A love triangle develops with these stars to keep the movie going.
If you love cheesy fun monster movies, then sit back and watch this one. You'll; have a lot of fun.

"The Return Of Dracula" (1958)
                                     -Francis Lederer

Plot: IMDB
Count Dracula kills a passenger on a train in Transylvania and steals his identity. He comes to a small community in California where the Mayberrys are expecting their cousin from Europe. His strange behavior, sleeping all day and going out at night are surprising to young miss Rachel Mayberry. A policeman from Europe comes to investigate while Rachel's best friend Jenny dies unexpectedly. And the count plans on giving Rachel the gift of eternal life...

Phantom's Review:. This film was released a few months before Christopher Lee's "Horror Of Dracula" but was quickly forgotten when that classic came out. but it's a Surprisingly, well made little low budget thriller. Francis Lederer makes  a suave Count. The rest of the cast does a decent job and the writing and direction are fine. Hardly a classic, but worth watching if your a "Dracula" fan, and keep your eyes open for a "colorful" death scene towards the end.

Plot: Amazon

Phantom's Review: One of the great monster movies of the '50's. Stop motion FX by the great Ray Harryhausen. Plenty of monster action decent acting and a fine story. Harryhausen manages to give the monster (called "The Ymir") a personality that sort of makes you root for him. The plot is reminiscent of "King Kong"but not a exact copy. This film is a minor classic, and should be seen by anybody who is a fan of 1950's monster films.

The future president discovers blood-thirsty vampires are planning to take over the United States. Lincoln makes it his mission to eliminate them, becoming history's greatest hunter of the undead.
-
Phantom's Review: First let me say Yes, I have read the book and I enjoyed it. Now Having said that let me say I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Even though there were many changes to the story and characters, I found the film to action packed, well acted and interesting. The actors do a fine job and it's nice to see a modern film trying to make vampires scary again. The film is beautifully shot and gives a look of an old style sepia tone photo. The middle portion of the film does get a little slow, but it picks up big time at the end with a major action piece. Overall a highly enjoyable action/monster movie.(Now if only they could figure out a story that combines Lincoln,Van Helsing, Blade and Buffy..now THAT would be a movie)

Phantom's Review: First, let me say, I'm a huge fan of the original. I saw it in the theaters back in the '80's and thought it was one of the most entertaining and original takes on the vampire concept. Full of interesting and likeable characters, fine FX and a great story.
Which brings me to the remake. If your a fan of the original...SKIP THIS WORTHLESS PIECE OF s**t!
All the characters have been "re-imagined" and are now all thoroughly unlikeable. "Charlie" is now a self absorbed little s**t. "Evil" Ed is just an obnoxious lout and worst of all is the "Peter Vincent" character, who is now just a foul mouthed and totally unlikeable figure.
Like so many remakes, this one doesn't hold a candle to the original. What a waste of time..

Sam Rami's horror/comedy classic. My 5 year old daughter saw it for the first time and she loved it. The next generation of fans has arrived.

"The Dark Knight Rises" (2012)
                                   -Christian Bale

Plot: IMDB
Eight years on, a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham's finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.

Phantom's Review: I've been a Batman fan/collector for about 45 years now. I've seen the character go through many, many changes in those years. Funny live action series, badly animated Saturday morning cartoons, Epic size Gothic motion pictures, brilliant animated series and several things in between, but in my opinion I don't think I've ever seen anything as awesome as "The Dark Knight Trilogy" and the final film in the series, "The Dark Knight rises" is absolutely brilliant.
Great acting, excellent action scenes, great FX and above all a wonderfully written script. I liked how this film brings all three films together and takes it to a entertaining conclusion. And Anne Hathaway looks damn good in that Catwoman outfit.
A great film.

August 16th, 1956 the world lost horror great Bela Lugosi.
To honor this star today's movie is (what else)

"Dracula" (1931)

Universal's classic about the vampire king going to England for a bite (sorry). One of the best.

"ParaNorman" (2012)

Plot: IMDB
In the town of Blithe Hollow, Norman Babcock is a boy who can speak to the dead, but no one besides his eccentric new friend, Neil, believes his ability is real. One day, Norman's estranged eccentric uncle tells him of an important annual ritual must he take up to protect the town from an curse cast by a witch it condemned centuries ago. Eventually, Norman decides to cooperate, but things don't go according to plan. Now, a magic storm of the witch threatens Blithe Hollow as the accursed dead rise. Together with unexpected new companions, Norman struggles to save his town, only to discover the horrific truth of the curse. With that insight, Norman must resolve the crisis for good as only he can.

Phantom's Review: Beautifully animated, surprisingly well written and a couple of decent scare scenes. To be honest, my expectations were a bit low but I thoroughly enjoyed this film.  A good spoof of horror films with a very good story.

"Vampire" (1979)
-Jason Miller, E.G. Marshal, Richard Lynch

Plot: IMDB

-- His self-made, but unwanted sleep of nearly 40 years disturbed by the ground-breaking to build a new church, over his self-collapsed tomb, under an old house that was his refuge in the 1940's, Anton Voytek arises to drink the blood and control the lives of people of the modern age in the late 1970's. His plans thwarted to use the wealth he had stolen and hoarded over the ages of his long life, he takes revenge on the architect, his wife, a retired policeman and all the people who are important to them all, to gain his revenge and perhaps a companion in his never-ending night.

Phantom's Review: In the late '70's there was a major revival of interest in vampire stories, Frank Langella had a successful Broadway run as "Dracula" and in '79 starred in the film version. George Hamilton made the popular vampire spoof "Love At First Bite" and on TV there was a show called "Clifhangers" that had a segment called "Curse Of Dracula"with Micheal Nouri. During this vampire boom came this minor film. A pilot for a series that never made it. The film has a few things going for it, most notably Richard Lynch as the vampire. He plays the character with great style and nobility, but also very ferocious. He is what "The Vampire Lestat" should have looked like..Veteran actor E.G. Marshal does a fine job as the retired cop. In fact the only person who seems out of place is Jason Miller, he looks like he'd rather be any where else then in this film. In fact he seems totally bored by the whole thing. It's not a bad film, if your a vampire fan, but skip it if your not.

"Equinox" (1970)
Plot: IMDB
Four friends are attacked by a demon while on a picnic, due to possession of a tome of mystic information. Told in flashbacks by the sole survivor.

Phantom's Review: What an amazing turd of a movie. Amateurish acting, directing and story. The only thing worth watching is some half decent stop motion animation FX by Jim Danforth. It;s a shame innocent film had to die for this.

"Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1959)
-Vampira, Tor Johnson, Bela Lugosi (kinda)

Plot: IMDB
Aliens resurrect dead humans as zombies and vampires to stop human kind from creating the Solaranite (a sort of sun-driven bomb).

Phantom's Review: It's been years since I last saw this "classic" and it hasn't improved any. Still hysterically bad and Totally amateur. The best of the worst.

"House Of Dracula" (1945)
                 -John Carradine, Lon Chaney jr

Plot: IMDB
Dracula arrives at Dr. Edelman's office asking for a cure to his vampirism. However, this is a ruse by Dracula to get near Dr. Edelman's beautiful female assistant and turn her into a vampire. Meanwhile, a sincere Lawrence Talbot, AKA the Wolfman, arrives seeking a cure for his lycanthropy. When Dr. Edelman's first attempt fails, Talbot tries to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff, but instead finds a network of underground caves where Frankensteins Monster is in stasis. Chaos ensues as the three monsters fight for dominance of each other.

Phantom's Review: The last of the "serious" Universal horror films. Not quite as good as "House Of Frankenstein" but still highly entertaining. John Carradine makes for a very classy Count Dracula, Chaney gives his usual fine performance as The Wolf Man and Glen Strange is an awesome looking Frankenstein Monster, although he spends most of the movie strapped to a lab table. Like most of the Universal films, this one has great atmosphere, fine music, sets and costumes. A minor classic, definitely worth watching.

"The Four Skulls Of Jonathan Drake" (1959)
                                  -Henry Daniell

Plot: IMDB

-- Jonathan Drake, while attending his brother's funeral, is shocked to find the head of the deceased is missing. When his brother's skull shows up later in a locked cabinet, Drake realizes an ancient curse placed upon his grandfather by a tribe of South American Jivaro Indians is still in effect and that he himself is the probable next victim. That night he is awakened by the approach of an Indian, his lips sewed together with string, and wielding a curare-tipped bamboo knife

Phantom's Review: , Micro-budget horror film. Themes that might have more interesting, had the film had a better script prove to be a bit silly here.Head hunters, immortality and Amazon magic are all used but to no great effect. The acting is over the top (especially Henry Daniell) and there are no real scares. Overall, just another low budget film that is easily forgettable.

"Trick r Treat" (2007)

Plot: IMDB
Five interwoven stories that occur on the same block, on the same night. A couple finds what happens when they blow a jack o' lantern out before midnight, a high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer, a college virgin might have met the right guy for her, a group of mean teens play a prank that they take too far, and a hermit is visited by a special trick or treater.

Phantom's Review: Let's face it guys, as Horror fans, we have to sit thru a lot of crap looking for something that's good to watch. But every now and then a film comes along and makes it all worth while, for me "Trick r Treat" was one of those rare little gems. This is a great  movie. Terrific acting, a superb story that blends several interlocking stories together, very atmospheric. It's a nice blend of scares, gore and humor that really captures the "spirit " of Halloween. I think this film is going to go on the list of yearly treats that I watch. Highly recommended.

"The Haunting" (1963)

Plot: IMDB
Dr. Markway, doing research to prove the existence of ghosts, investigates Hill House, a large, eerie mansion with a lurid history of violent death and insanity. With him are the skeptical young Luke, who stands to inherit the house, the mysterious and clairvoyant Theodora and the insecure Eleanor, whose psychic abilities make her feel somehow attuned to whatever spirits inhabit the old mansion. As time goes by it becomes obvious that they have gotten more than they bargained for as the ghostly presence in the house manifests itself in horrific and deadly ways.

Phantom's Review: Arguably, the greatest ghost story ever filmed. Every time I watch this film I'm amazed by how good it is. With the just the use of good acting, writing, some superb direction , minimal FX and plenty of atmosphere director Robert Wise made a true classic. With so many modern films overloaded with special FX, it's nice to sit back and enjoy this creepy classic.

Plot:IMDB

A group of heavily armed hijackers board a luxury ocean liner in the South Pacific Ocean to loot it, only to do battle with a series of large-sized, tentacled, man-eating sea creatures who have taken over the ship first.

Phantom's Review: I love this movie. It's just a good old fashioned monster movie. Plenty of scares, action, gore and humor. A fun "leave your brain at the door and enjoy" type of film. Highly recommended.

John Carpenter's
"Vampires" (1998)
                -James Woods

Plot: IMDb
A vengeful vampire slayer must retrieve an ancient Catholic relic that, should it be acquired by vampires, will allow them to endure sunlight.

Phantom's Review: Vampires have always been my favorite movie monsters and before they were ruined by sparkly, twinkly pansy boys, they were like this: Scary , violent and powerful. "John Carpenter's Vampires" shows them like this. The film is well made. Has some good scares, plenty of violence and gore and has some damn sexy women and James Woods is totally bad ass as the veteran slayer with a personal grudge against vamps. Highly entertaining.

"Snow White And The Huntsman" (2012)

Plot: IMDb

In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen.

Phantom's Review: First the good things, Charlize Theron is excellent as the evil queen. The movie is beautifully filmed, it has a kind of "Lord Of The Rings"style going for it. Some good special FX and fine action scenes.
The Bad things: Sadly, the worst thing about the movie is Snow White herself. Kristen Stewarts vacant, dead behind the eyes stare gave her a look of somebody who is perpetually stoned. Her acting abilities are non existent and she has the emotional range of a paper bag. I have never seen her before in a movie and if this is the best she can do, then I truly don't understand her popularity. This is a film that should have been great but instead is only OK.

"Hound Of The Baskervilles" (1959)
                             Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee

Plot: IMDB
Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson investigate the legend of a supernatural hound, a beast that may be stalking a young heir on the fog-shrouded moorland that makes up his estate.

Phantom's Review: While not one of my favorite Holmes films, this is nonetheless a superior mystery film with the ususal Hammer Film atmosphere and style. Cushing makes for a fine Holmes and Christopher Lee is a bit subdued as Sir Henry Baskerville. Well made and entertaining even though they made a few changes to the Arthur Conan Doyle story.

"Curse Of the Undead"(1959)
                 -Michael Pate, Eric Fleming

Plot: IMDB
Young women in a small Western town are dying one by one of an unknown malady involving massive blood loss. The Carter family's ranch is being terrorized by ruthless land baron Buffer. And a mysterious black-clad gunfighter with an aversion to sunlight has just arrived in town.

Phantom's Review: I love this film. I watch it every Halloween. While most definitely a "B" movie, this is actually a very good "B" movie. It's able to combine elements from both supernatural horror and western into one story and make it good. Filled with familiar character actors that are easily recognizable to fans, some nice creepy atmosphere and a great spooky music score. This is a fun Halloween treat for those of us who are fans of both Horror and Westerns.

Plot :IMDB

In the process he meets local girl Maggie Evans and notices that she looks exactly like his deceased fiance Josette. Barnabas assumes that she is the reincarnation of Josette, and plans to make him his unholy bride for eternity.

Phantom's Review: One of my favorite vampire films. Good story (adapted from the soap opera) plenty of Hammer film style gore and atmosphere. And some fine acting from the stars. Highly entertaining.

"Gammera The Invincible" (1966)

Plot:
After the atomic bombs carried by a shot-down Soviet bomber explode in the Arctic, a 200 foot tall, fire breathing, flying turtle monster (Damn, what were they smoking back then) awakens from it's hibernation and goes on a destructive rampage.

Phantom's Review: Japanese cheese at it's finest. Cool monster, bad dubbing, lots of destruction. And like the original "Godzilla' before it, this film has been "Americanized" with footage showing soldiers, scientists and talk show hosts dealing with the monster. These scenes are hysterical. A fun way to spend an afternoon.

Waiting to watch Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, I'm having issues with my bluray player but it's sitting on my shelf in it's lovely netflix envelope. :)

Bloody Mallory is the last one I actually watched, I love it!!!! and own it on dvd.

"Heroines Mallory, Vena Cava and Talking Tina fight the fallen angel Abaddon and his accomplices vampire Lady Valentine and succubus Morphine. "

The colorful characters, wacky humor and rather impressive, even if it's a little corny and cliche storyline does the french horror industry justice, in my quirky opinion.  :)

"The Raven" (2012)
                    _John Cusack

Plot: IMDB
When a madman begins committing horrific murders inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's works, a young Baltimore detective joins forces with Poe to stop him from making his stories a reality.

Phantom's Review:

This is a great murder mystery. Well acted, very atmospheric, interesting story and a bit of gore. Cusack is terrific as Edgar Allan Poe. The film has a bit of a "From Hell"/"Sleepy Hollow" feel to it but it works to it's advantage. Very entertaining movie.

"Men In Black III" (2012)
-Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Josh Brolin

Plot:
Even though agents J and K have been protecting the Earth from alien scum for many years, J still does not know much about his gruff partner. However, J soon gets an unexpected chance to find out what makes K tick when an alien criminal called Boris the Animal escapes, goes back to 1969, and kills K. With the fate of the planet at stake, J goes back in time and teams up with K's younger self to put things right.

Phantom's Review: Fun, entertaing sequel. Better than Part 2, but number one is still the best. The best part of the film is watching Josh Brolin do an amazing job as the young Agent K. You could really believe he would eventually turn into Tommy Lee Jones. I really enjoyed this film.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012)

Plot: IMDB
Peter Parker/Spider-Man finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner.

Phantom's Review: I personally found "Amazing" to be ...adequate. Not a bad film by any means. Good FX (if you don't mind a ton of CGI) good cast , story but the film seemed to lack the fun and excitement of the first two Sam Rami pictures. I really didn't see the point of retelling the origin over again. It made the first half hour of the film drag. But my biggest complaint with this film (as well as many other super hero movies) WHY THE HELL DO THEY KEEP TAKING OFF THE MASK!
Most of the film , he was walking around in his Spidey suit with no mask on. Do the producers feel the audience is so stupid that we would forget what the actor looked liked? It was an Okay film, I just hope the sequel is better.

"Paranormal Activity 4" (2012)

Plot:
It has been five years since Katie murdered her sister and disappeared with her infant nephew, Hunter, in tow. Now, a new family is about to fall prey to nighttime terrors. A mysterious accident next door leads to teenage Alex and her family becoming the temporary guardians of Robbie, a very creepy neighbor boy. Cameras installed throughout Alex's home capture the sinister events that unfold after Robbie's arrival.

Phantom's Review: When the "home video/Found Footage" type of films first started, I rather enjoyed them. Films like "Paranormal Activity" (1), "Cloverfield", (rec) and a few others were very entertaining. But now with "PA4" I think that ship has sailed and won't be coming back for a while. It's not so much that this is a bad film, it's not, the actors do a good job and there are a couple of decent BOO! scenes, it's just a feeling of "Been There/Seen That". The series has completely lost any sense of originality, that it once had (probably due to too many sequels and imitations)Right from the beginning you could tell who was going to get it, where most of the major scares were coming from and what was going to happen next. Not bad as a rental, but I think it's time to wrap this franchise up.

"Hotel Transylvania"(2012)

Plot: IMDB
Dracula, who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a boy discovers the resort and falls for the count's teen-aged daughter.

Phantom's Review: First, let me say, I can't stand Adam Sandler. Don't know why, he just irritates the s**t out of me. Now, having said that, I must say that I liked "Hotel Transylvania".
It's cute, silly and has some fun spoofs of the classic movie monsters. It's not great by any means, but it's a fun family movie, and it's a good way to introduce the classic monsters to a younger audience.

Shadow People!

Not bad, not only it based on a true story, it also explains the potential rational reasons for the phenomenah. Sort of a placebo effect. Makes sense, especially if you're of the mind over matter school. A little slow but paired with actual interviews and footage keeps you engaged.

If you enjoy true life ghost stories, it's wonderful.
