Ryobi:
What about the theory; when technology advances so much that 'mind-uploading' becomes possible. While this is happening serious progress in neuroscience and artificial intelligence is under-way, and eventually we're able to isolate individual cognitive modules and connect them up to modules from other uploaded minds. If all these modules conformed to a common standard you could in theory make the individual mind kind of like a block of code, you could take certain traits out or add new coding where wanted.

Want to learn Japanese? Hire a professional language module to articulate your thoughts for you! Why learn arithmetic? Buy some time on Arithmetic-Modules Inc. whenever you need to work out a few nasty calculations. Don't bother making decisions, get some certified executive-modules that can scan your goal structure and manage your assets to the best of your programmed capabilities for you.

Some uploaded minds might want to keep with some of the old ways though, learn japanese through research and taking lessons, do the sums on paper etc. They'd end up more like hobbyists right? Like people who cultivate their own herb gardens, or make their own clothes. Less efficient than regular uploads with their frequently changing base-mind and soon outdated.

Gets the gears turning in the old modules brahs

What if you download a virus?

I dont like the idea of having a computer brain, yeah you could remember everything youve ever learned or seen, but alot of us have things we would rather forget.

If you think about it, most or mabey all of our major achevments are due to a few people, not all of us. And then, most of them drew upon knowledge that was already here, left by older generations. Im sure we have evolved some, but mabey some more than others.

That would be a big issue... Because knowing myself I'd pirate every single program possible and learn every last one of 'em as fast as possible... XD Pirating is bad, m'kay? What would a mental adware look like? O_O Would you have random thoughts that don't belong to you? "MUST... BUY... NOW!"

Ryobi:
In every species there are those that exceed at the traits inherent in that species. Falcons with larger wing spans and lungs and sharper claws etc.

Maybe gettting a virus within a module would sort of be the same as if mental illnesses became contagious. Still curable, you might have to reboot the system though and the media would have to constantly be putting out new lists of infected software. Adware would work in the same way, everyone would invest in some kind of anti-virus/adware and at night just take it like a pill from the old days before going to bed.

Ravinclaw, that's why modules are better, you can take out whatever you don't want anymore, like memories and fill in the gaps with self-esteem boosting speeches or a sex scene maybe...

KubeSix:
Hmm contagious insanity... Imagine a world filled with schizophrenics! :-o
