Bioships?
« on: December 18, 2008, 04:18:27 pm »
I was surfing the net and one thing led to another and eventually I began reading a wikipedia article on bioships.

Essentially bioships are space ships that are grown, either like a plant or an actual space farring animal, frankly it caught my attention, so to the topic of the thread: Are bioships possible and if so what would be needed for them to occur.
I have multiple personalities, one is a were-Sheepenguin, one is a fruit vampire, one likes to imagine cruel and unusal totures, that one's name is Bob the VI.

That is a interesting question, years, I mean years into the future it may be possible

That is technology that blows my mind just thinking about it, we will discover how to travel at the speed of light (if possible) before we develop bioships

One of my favorite scifi tv series had this type of technology, babylon 5, the Vorlons had ships that were organic in nature and at least partially sentient

Could you imagine having to deal with one, problems that you might encounter have a living ship

Attitude:

Captain: Full speed ahead

Living Ship (LS): Make me cheese-brain

Likes and Dislikes:

Captain: Activate Jump Gate

LS: No way, hyperspace gives me a headache.

Personality:

Captain: Fire all guns

LS: There must be some way to solve this problem in a peaceful manner Captain!
After all, we're all rational, intelligent life forms! Just give peace a chance!

Physical condition:

Captain: Evasive action

LS: Oh , I think I'm going to be sick. ( the thought of a 1000 ton starship being violently ill does not do good things for crew morale )

Psychological problems:

Captain: Move along side that other vessel

LS: I don't like the way his sensors are looking at me...I really don't like it...he's watching me...I can see it...he's watching me..........ARGG! YOU WANT TO KILL ME! YOU ALL WANT TO KILL ME!!........... I'LL SHOW YOU PARANOID!!

Captain: You just took out our command and control ship

LS: Hehheheheh........... got him before he got me

Survival instinct:

Captain: We've been hit! 2% damage to secondary hull

LS:     OWWWW!!!        WAAAHHHH!!!       I HURT!!         MOMMY..............HELP ME!!......THEY AREN'T PLAYING NICE!! WAAHHHH!!!         I'M LEAVING!!!

Sexual preferences:

Captain: Fire on the enemy vessel

LS: Actually, I think he's kind of cute. I wonder if  they'd like to go out........opening hailing frequencies...hey enemy destroyer...want to go surf the asteroid belt with me?

As you can see, living ships open up a whole new way for equipment to not act in the expected manner. After all, no one can exactly predict the actions of another living creature with any accuracy, I was planning to submit the Mrs as proof

What do you want, you moon-faced assassin of joy?

I think it's possible, if it is a plant like creature, then all you'd have to do is make sure it gets plenty of sunlight as it flies by stars, and frequent water stops. There are already plants hat can "walk" across the sea floor. So mobile plants aren't at all that unusual.

Plus, if it's a plant, it can produce all the oxygen we need while simultaneously getting rid of our carbon dio-stuff.

Plant based ships would also produce food for the crew and would probbably be the best choice for a bioship ^^

As for what Markus said I think bioships would at most be like domesticated animals so such sentience probbably wouldn't exist cause for what reason would a sentient creature like you described allow somebody to ride it in the first place? In fact enough sentience to be able to think such things would probbably be created due to artificial intelligence in non-bioships. . .

A living ship would most likely be designed for symbiotic relationships with humans. We give it protection, free food, and keep it free of parasites. All it has do is let us crawl around inside of it.

If they are self aware enough, we can even make contracts with them.

I believe that that kind of ships can exist, but human kind... well, we are just not ready yet for that kind of bio/tech. Some old SF writers, like Asimov, wrote about cyborgs. Why wouldnt it be possible to create AI that is powered by living organism?
