Title: Meditation 101
Post by: matthew321 on June 16, 2010, 03:58:56 PM
Okay I am tired of people asking how to do this. Or some people just plainly do not know how. I will be happy to give my technique and I encourage others to contribute.

First of all there is no set way to meditate there is also no right and wrong. If you are satisfied with your results then that is close enough to right for me. Meditate in any position you like, any time, place,

Second of all there are different ways and methods and forms. This seems like this would be the first thing but it is slightly different. All meditation is relaxing the mind. That is all meditation is for. Now people often use this relaxation for greater focus on a specific task and that is fine. But the original intent of meditation is to relax the mind. Some people find gardening a form of meditation and that is different from just folding your hands and having your legs crossed while you go "ummmmm". People do it in different ways. If you find a specific task relaxing guess what? It is a form of meditation.

third thing is that I will be covering the more advanced meditation. Not just doing something relaxing but channeling your mind to accomplish a specific task. Such as to talk to spirits, talk to yourself, get better understanding of something, etc.
Now you are putting your calm mind to work and are leaving your body out of the equation for this.

This meditation is the form where you close your eyes and focus on your mind. You are to be relaxed when this is going on. You are not doing any other activity then this. You are relaxing your mind but for a specific purpose. So your relaxed mind is going to work. Which means it is not going to be as relaxed as it would be gardening but this is deeper. This is to solve issues or to maintain them. You can learn to do many things with this. I am getting ahead of myself so I will describe the technique.

The technique I use is to turn off all lights, electronics, power strips, nothing has power going to it. In the room I am going to meditate in. I like to sit on a nice comfy bed, but I just sit on mine instead. I clear all the blankets to the side, or stretch them all out and make my bed look pretty. Then I am to climb on my bed and sit crossed legged. Before I sit on the meditation spot I like to stretch all my muscles (even my fingers) it helps me, other wise they get twitchy. Now I fold my hands together and sit straight. I do some deep breathing while I am still sitting up straight. I thought the breathing was stupid until I started then I understood it is useful. It slows down my heart rate and calms me. I do this for very few minutes. The goal is to get very relaxed. I love it when my feet go to sleep and I can't feel them. You will be sitting there with your eyes closed and your body will go to sleep. Now don't just sit there and wait for that because that will seem like it takes forever. Your mind is going to be preoccupied and will be ignoring the body. Since if you think about your body it will never go to sleep if you are focused on it.

What your mind will be doing is relaxing. I like to clear my mind, now that means focus my thoughts. I will focus them on relaxing just the feeling of being relaxed. If I realize my thoughts will take away the experience then the thoughts will slowly dissipate for me. I like to focus on not thinking and you have to be a crazy person for this to work. You have all your thoughts focused on not thinking. "must not think" "must not think" "must not think" Do not think you will be perfect at this and trust me I am not perfect at all. My mind will wander off and I often day dream or think of something else. I then bring my mind back to "must not think" This takes practice. Now at this point I am very relaxed I am feeling great. You can either stay here and enjoy the bliss or take it a step further and do something.

Some people like to talk to their spirit guides using meditation (also known as animal totems, guardians, guardian angels) I hear the technique of picturing a place in your mind for just you and your guardian to talk works great. Such as being at a beach, a park, your room, volcano, the white house where ever. This requires a deep meditation and you will be very unaware of your body. You can also make your own world in your mind and torture the poor people you have created!... I mean go fly around... and not torture people...

There is the technique of astral projection and there is a different topic on that. This happens to be my favorite.

Anyway this will be edited and I will post more but this is the basic idea. The longer you meditate the more deep your mind can get. You must relax and focus. You are not likely to get it first try it takes practice.

I tried to do this, but it seems that when I get to the relaxed part that I fall asleep, waking up about 2 hours later.

what am I doing wrong?

You are so relaxed you fall asleep? Well if your goal is to relax then you succeeded. I am guessing you were lying down, when I lie down and do it I do fall asleep. I have to sit up because I am so accustomed of lying down for sleep. Your goal is to sort of fall asleep. Your mind will stay awake but your body will be asleep. You are on the right path, just practice.
Tell yourself "I will keep my mind awake as my body falls asleep, the mind awake, body asleep, mind awake, body asleep." Keep conscious control if you need too just keep on controlling your thoughts then work on emptying your mind. This is designed as a starting point.

Keep in mind I have said my opinion and my methods. I am not perfect and I am not the master at this. I am stating what works for me. You will adjust it to work for you. It takes practice don't expect to be perfect first time.

yes, I do lay down.

After I emptied my thoughts and their is nothing left to think about where do I go? Where ever I feel like going?

I hope that that is not a dumb question.

Yes go wherever you want! Do what you want! It is your mind and it is controlled by you. This means in basic terms that you are god in your mind.

Now if you wanted to do something more advanced then relaxing you will want to state that in advance to the meditation. Such as  "I will leave my body and not fall asleep" "Or I will go to my own world"

I know saying it out loud might seem stupid but it reinforces it. Especially if you think it is stupid. Then your shame of doing it actually will work as a stimulant to provoke it. Meaning your shame will make you absorb your words more. That increases the probability of good results.

Also practice makes perfect and don't get discouraged if you succeed less then you wanted too (do not use the words fail and can't). Just keep trying and you will adapt a method that works for you. You will find the words you need to motivate yourself. The world that is easiest to imagine to go to. The easiest ways to relax as well. These all come from you all I have given are pointers.

If my methods work then great! If not then try someone else's or try some of your own. There is no wrong way with your own mind.

funnies thing in the world happened while i was meditating. :P My dog[less then a foot tall and less then a foot long] was laying on the guests bed in my guestroom. i was meditating, and when i  meditate i usually stretch, i find it the easiest way to relax [ i was in gymnastics for 7 years so i stretched on a daily basis and it helps clear my head] and i go down to the floor so my nose is touching the ground with  legs spread out [basically doing the splits] and all i hear is patpatpat. i was like wth, so i look up. and there is my doggie laying on the edge of the bed with his head in between his small paws starring at me. [after my nose was touching the ground he could no longer see me so he moved to the edge of the bed to watch] cutest thing ive ever seen. i wish i took a picture to show you guys/gals how cute he was [:
