Well, I don't know about microtonic or whatever...but what I thought of when I saw the thread title was what happens to me sometimes when I play...I have bits of tunes come into my head, and if I let myself start playing them they just flow to a natural ending. These are tunes I've never heard before, and I never know if I'm playing the same thing over and over or if it's different every time; I never remember what I play and I've never recorded it. But I know it sounds good because I've done it in front of people.

I often have sometnhing similar happen. I am a musician with about 8 under my belt and I have a pretty good singing voice. Sometimes, whether I'm practicing or not, I'll have random songs come into my mind, often sounding like orchestral pieces. I have never heard the songs before, but it gets to the point that I begin humming it as it continues along a path, eventually coming to an ending. I never remember the way it goes exactly, but it is just so amazing the first time. I can't write it down for that reason. Sometimes, like with you, it happens during a little practice session and I just go with it until I end or lose the song.
