Title: I am writing a novel
Post by: Acewingx on January 04, 2012, 08:11:05 AM
Hey folks. My Name is Gary Etchingham and I have just finished chapter 1 of my first ever novel. It is a tale about a young girl called Debra who finds herself thrust into the world of a zombie apocolypse where she is trying to get to her father's house the next town over to find and protect her little brother.

I am just curious if any of you would find something like this interesting and any feedback would be very much appreciated :D

Hey.

Yeah, zombie apocalypses are pretty common, so I might recommend adding some big twists in there to make it good - turning the genre itself on its backside. Work with the seemingly obvious cliches. It's your novel, but working with this - I'd try to make the main character a genre-savvy person who thinks she knows what is going to happen based off other zombie apocalypse movies. Of course, this is where you make the big changes - making the protagonist unsure of herself.

Flat out lie to your audience--if you like--about some of the events in the book. Otherwise,  make the audience uncomfortable - it is a horror based novel, isn't it? The fact that the main character herself isn't so sure of what's going to happen anymore should work to the effect of making the reader uncomfortable.

Just my tibit of suggestion. Like Loki says, It would be better to read it, but I understand copyright and all.

Thanks Copper Dragon. Some really great suggestions there. I'll definately take them into account. I'm working on character development at the moment as well as trying to come up with story twists to go with the overall story that I have in mind. Ill be sure to update you with info on the book in the future.

Again thanks so much for the tips.

Gary.

An acquaintance of mine has recently published a novella along those lines, called The Dead Walked (http://bit.ly/xc1fsh). You might want to check it out, and hit up his site to see if you can garner some tips on getting a Kindle edition published. That’s the way forward these days.

Might not need to say this, but you never know. Make it bloody and give details for the slaughterings. The youngest that read this book will be in their late teens. So it won't hurt for some blood and gore.
