Title: Talking to the deads

IT used to be a taboo subject, but is fast becoming a must-have talent among celebrities - the ability to communicate with the dead.

From Robbie Williams and Sir Paul McCartney to Gabby Logan and Barbra Streisand, the stars are insisting that we can get in touch with our deceased loved ones.

And it seems the sixth sense could soon be as commonly used as the first five, with the number of people experiencing strong supernatural experiences continuing to rise.

New research reveals that more than one in three people have had an After- Death Communication (ADC), though some experts claim the figure could be even higher.

Following the success of haunting Hollywood films such as Sixth Sense, starring Bruce Willis, and The Others, starring Nicole Kidman, many people are becoming more open about their paranormal experiences.

Hundreds of spooky examples from across the country have been collated in a new book, After Death Communication, by Emma Heathcote-James, which contains convincing evidence supporting psychics' belief that contact can be made from `the other side'.

An ADC is a spiritual experience that happens when a person is contacted directly and spontaneously by a family member or friend who has died, without the use of a medium, ritual or device.

They are always initiated by deceased loved ones and can happen anywhere and anytime. And the experiences commonly provide powerful emotional and spiritual healing, especially for those who are grieving or afraid of death.

Surveys carried out over the last decade showed almost a quarter of those asked said they had been in touch with someone who had died, once or twice. A further 15 per cent claimed to have had the experience on several occasions.

As ever, celebrities have been leading the way, sharing their supernatural sides.

Sir Paul McCartney has insisted he feels late wife Linda's spirit around the family home. Paul was devastated when Linda died of breast cancer in 1998, but is comforted by thoughts that her spirit lives on.

He says: "After Linda died, all of us in the family would hear noises or see things and think `That's Linda ... that's mom'. And in some ways, it's very comforting to think she's still here."

TV presenter Gabby Logan revealed recently how the spirit of her dead brother visited her just hours before her showbiz wedding.

The glamorous blonde was lying on a treatment bed, receiving acupuncture to soothe her nerves on the morning of her marriage to Scottish rugby star Kenny Logan, but her heart raced as the psychic therapist treating her told her that Daniel, who died at the age of 15 in 1996 from a rare heart condition, was in the room beside them.

Gabby, 29, says: "It was very, very emotional. All of a sudden my body went ice-cold and I had the incredible sensation that I was being pushed up from the bed.

"The acupuncturist's eyes filled up and tears started coming down her face. She said `can you feel it?' and I said yes. She said `your brother's just come into the room'.

"I can't tell you how my body felt. The acupuncturist said `the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up. He just wants you to know that everything is going to be all right and that he loves you very much'.

"I was in tears. Then my body went back to normal."

GMTV weathergirl Andrea McLean has had several spooky experiences, claims she has a sixth sense and can sense dead people around her.

She says: "I knew when my mum's dad, Alexander Nicol, died. It was my 21st and the family had been out. We got back and were all laughing about something. I was doubled up with laughter when the phone rang.

"My face supposedly went white and I remember knowing my grandad had died. Sure enough, the call was from my aunt saying he had. It was a complete bolt from the blue. He'd fallen and had a heart attack."

Geri Halliwell has regularly visited psychics since the death of her father six months before she joined the Spice Girls.

After becoming a solo artist, she recorded the song, Someone's Watching Over Me, about his continuing influence on her life from the other side of the grave. On moving into the Buckinghamshire mansion she bought in 1999, Geri claimed she could sense her father in an large dining room of the Georgian monastery.

She said: "I was always Daddy's little girl and I think he's decided to move with me here. As soon as I walked into this one room, I could feel him and smell him. It was like an old chip-fat, cooking type of smell."

Barbra Streisand claims the inspiration for her movie Yentl came to her from her father, who spoke to her from beyond the grave.

The singer and actress's dad died when she was just 15 months old. In 1979, four years before the film was released, she attended a seance and received two messages from her dad.

Barbra revealed: "The first one was `sorry', which was astounding because I wa angry at him for leaving me. The second message was `sing proud'.

"I know it sounds crazy, but it was my father telling me to have th courage of my convictions, so I made Yentl - and I did sing proud."

Robbie Williams has also claimed to be haunted in hotels while touring.

As a young boy, he saw ghosts in the bar of his father's pub, but now says he's visited by the spirit of his grandmother and the song, `Nan's Song' on his latest album, Escapology, describes the pair's close relationship.

Basketball star Michael Jordan is another high-flier who claims his late father continues to guide his career and private life. He's claimed he's had signs from his dad and often feels his presence.

Michael says: "All my choices have been more or less a influence of him. When I feel confused, over a night's period I feel like I've come up with a solution.

"I feel like I've gotten spiritual input from my father. It gives me the confidence to make a decision instinctively, whatever the decision may be."

Being open to your dreams, and the spirits who may be trying to make contact, can be a life-changing experience.

American housewife Teri Bonfield was devastated after her close friend, Tina Siegel, died from cancer aged just 24.

After a particularly vivid dream about Tina, Teri woke with a set of numbers in her mind which she wrote down and started playing on the Ohio Super Lotto.

The numbers struck gold 18 months later, when her ticket won the dollars 20million prize.

Well, I've never been contacted by a dead friend or family member, but I stayed in a haunted hotel once, and the ghost knocked on my door. I know it was the ghost because the hall was very creaky, impossible to walk in without making noise. It was earlier than most people get up. When I opened the door there was no one there, and I hadn't heard the hall creaking.
