A lot of people, espcially those want-to-be goths think that Death AKA the Reaper is evil. I understand that he symbolizes the end of all life, but would you say that he is evil. I think is is just symbolic of what people would think Death would look like and he just does his job. Why do we symbolize him as a sadistic, insane, killer. (Except for Discworld)
I always thought of him as a crazy, tea obbessed, over-exagerated bad english accent. (In a fun sort of way.)
Express thoughts here.
-
To some degree, we all fear death coming for us in what we will deem a very premature manner. Hence the vilification of the Reaper can be seen as a natural reflection of humans whom view death as an arbitrary menace that take lives based on whims.
-
I've never thought of death as evil. Just another part of life, y'know? Yes, death can cause pain to loved ones, but it strengthens us and is a completely natural and necessary thing. Death itself should not be painful but a release, since suffering before death is indeed not uncommon.
If anything I'm worried about death being seen as this great evil because it drives us to attempt to live forever. More and more anything that dies is seen as wrong. So overpopulation happens, animals are brought into captivity to keep them alive because we take their place in the wild yet still say they must live. I hate to say it, but we must draw a line in saving lives of human, animal, and plant. Either we must die or some of the less dominant species must. We can't keep them alive forever, though we seem hellbent on trying. Either that, or we decide to "overcome" nature as a whole. This half-and-half attitude with death (both as evil by society and good by nature) is just causing confusion and destruction.
And just for the record, I indeed do not like the "we must save all the animals!" mentality. I will fight against moving into their territory, I will fight for reintroduction if we can coexist but chose not to once, however I refuse to take in or save an injured animal in the wild. Yes, it may seem heartless to those who love animals and who have the same "Death is evil" mentality, but in actuality I see it as nature at work. The animal will die and other animals will live because of its death. It will not be wasted. The problem occurs when we do not allow the bodies to be returned to other creatures, but instead bury them to let the useful meat rot. If I were to die, I'd like to be left out for the animals to feed on, but I somehow don't think my Christian family would be okay with that.
I suppose to sum up all that ranting I'll say that my way of seeing death is through nature, being a nature-lover and all. I love animals and humans alike, but death is not at all evil in my opinion, just part of the necessary cycle of nature.
-
I honestly don't know many goths or goth wanna-bes that think that Death is evil. Death, seen by most who embrace or at least pretend to embrace that culture seem to think of Death as the ultimate good, ending the pain and suffering of the living world. Just look at the stereotypical statement that has been plucked from that culture, "Life is Pain."
-
Death is just a necessary force to complete the cycle of life. The only reason it gets such a bad rep is because it causes pain and pain to us is BAD.
-
I think that as a whole people are generally afraid of anything they cannot fully understand. Death might be the greatest and most contravercial mystery to humankind. No one really KNOWS exactly what happens after our hearts stop beating. Heaven? Hell? Reincarnation? I think the fear of death makes it a negative thing, and therefore it becomes an evil of sorts.
Death is just a necessary force to complete the cycle of life. The only reason it gets such a bad rep is because it causes pain and pain to us is BAD.
This is another good point. Fear of bodily harm is also another insatiable human fear that is expressed in many ways. There is a reason that horror movies and books are scary. We are afraid of bodily harm, especially harm that results in an untimely and painful death. Through this, we are forced to leave everything we know and love behind without preparation, and the fear of it happening at any given moment again reinforces the negativity of death. It is the only constant in every human life. We all must die, and there isn't a damn thing any one of us can do to stop it. I don't think it's evil. I am doing my best to get over the fear, and, as I am sure many of you do, I have my own ideas of what will happen to me when I kick it, but I see it as another step in life. There is no sense in fearing what you cannot control. Run while your legs can still carry you, because sitting in a chair for fear of breaking those legs leads to a most unfullfilling life. There, that is what you can all quote me for when I die.
-
Yes, that was something I was trying to say in that mishmash up there: we fear pain and view pain as evil rather than death (as death itself as far as we know is not painful), but because of pain occuring so often with death we associate them and fear death as well.
Also, I agree a great deal of it is fearing the unknown. Not knowing when, how, or what will happen is terrifying to many. What we fear we often label as "evil", if not formally then in our own minds. This fear is also what keeps us alive/from doing really stupid things, so I suppose it isn't all bad.
-
Its funny, I was just having a similar conversation the other day. People were asking me if I was suicidal or something and I responded with "No, why?". They told me they thought so because I said something about not caring if I died or something. Naturally, I responded with the very fact that I am comfortable with death and if it happens, it happens. Its not like I have a choice in the matter, but to others that is inconceivable.
-
in my opinion death comes when either you have acomplished your purpose in life and lived a decently long life or if you refuse to acomplish your purpose. and as far as the grim reaper i subscribe to the theory that it is just his job there is no feeling involved he might feel bad for the victims however its his job and he cant avoid it.
-
So "Don't fear the Ripper" ;-)
-
He just gets a bad rap thats all.
When Kali was offered the job in Hindu Mythology, she didn't want it and stalled on starting it for thousands of years. Finally one of the other gods had to show her how horrible life was when you didn't die. People could barely move, because there was so many. Illnesses were not killing them, but they still felt the pain. Finally she took the job.
So Death has to do the job.
-
So "Don't fear the Ripper" ;-)
Unless his name is Jack

death is glories and should be celabrated. a happy time of remeberence and reflextion, and the start of a new adventure for the daparted.

Death is an event not a being therefore it can't be good nor evil. It just happens. Your death may be a result of an evil action or a good action but death in an of itself is neither.
ZRY
-
that statement is inconsistant. you say that since death is not a being it can not be good or evil but you say there are such things as good or evil actions. unles i am mistaking, death is an action. you die. it dies. i die. she dies. then again you could be seein death as a stated of being but you already said that its an event and therefore an action - something thats happening
-

Interesting point. Perhaps my syntax is bad but my point is death is neith good nor evil. Would you agree with this or not?
ZRY

Death is a natural occuring event. but it is also a state of being depending on the way the word is used you can be dead(state of being) or you can die(action) same word different forms
i'd say that i would have to agree with Zak on this topic and say that death cannot be catagorized as good or as evil seeing as it is not a concience entity but an event and as Janus pointed out also a state of being
But for these purposes lets say that all things with a beginning have an eventual end and if life or birth is the beginning death is the end so death is the result of life just as life is the result of death because in order for one being to live annother must die So even if it was an entity here it would be neutral because as much as it takes it also gives
Also alot of death has been over emphisized by humans so this natural occurence has been tipped to evil in most minds because they fail to see the positives and only their selfish negitives
-
Well, look at it this way. Death is a "Force of Nature". Which Force you ask? Well, certainly not Gravity, the Strong or Weak nuclear forces, or electromagnetism. No, death is the physical expression of Entropy. I invite you all to look up this concept online. The best article I've found yet is on Wikipedia, much as I hate to redirect anyone there. Just key in 'entropy' into the search bar, and give yourself an hour or two, it's a very involved article.
-
to zak: its not syntax that is a problem but it is no matter I do agree with you in saying that death is neither good nor evil
to moloch: death is not the force of entropy entropy is energy lost from a system death is recycling that energy into more life
-
exactly

Late post.
So the subject of this topic is.....
"Life fears death, but lives only to die"
-
nope the question is if death is evil . i personally do not think death is evil at all. death persona was portrayed as a scary skeleton wearing all black and ending peoples life's with its huge scythe. but it only does its job, i seriously doubt death persona. runs around killing people just for fun. i think god gives death a laid out plan of when who dies when and where, death shows up and escorts that spirit from its body and to whatever its destination may be.
-
This is going to sound way crazy, but Death and it's/his roll is portrayed well in a movie called 'Monkey Bone.' Yeah, I know I'm screwy. *<:)
-
I think death is no(properly)t personified. AT ALL.
So
He
Needs
a
SIMILEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
No takers on that theory?? I didn't really think so anyway. But why is everyone so afraid of Death? Because they're scared of the act of dying. And since he represents that, they're afraid of him. But Death himself isn't scary. He's an angel of mercy. He releives suffering. He teaches. He strengthens those that are left by whom he takes.
-
((Late post))
On my opinion it depends on the psychological history of the person, since we mainly learn to see Mr. Death as evil, if a person was of peaceful and accepting nature s/he would maturely accept it as mandatory in the life cycle. If a person is suicidal they would actually receive with opened arms. Killing is one thing that is evil but a natural death is inevitable. And regarding to the wanna-be Goths who see the Death as an evil Grim Reaper it all depends of culture and point of view. In Mexico, for instance, Santa Muerte is a religious (often female) figure who receives petitions for love, luck, and protection - and Saint Death shrines are very popular for those who pray for the recovery of sick relatives or stolen items. Interesting, no?
-
In Ancient Egyptian Mythology Anubis was the god of the underworld. He was prayed to and asked to take care of the dead. I think it's mainly an English speaking theory that death is evil. It seems that other cultures have their heads on straight though.

Exactly, and (nothing against our country) but the superstitions change from good to bad here as well. Take for example western history, black cats have often been looked upon as a symbol of bad omens. One of the prevalent black cat superstition alive in our the western culture today is if a black cat crosses your path, it is considered bad luck. Interestingly, in most other cultures, the black cat is a prized possession & owning one is said to bring the owner good luck. Some of the stuff (besides death/Grim Reaper) some people would consider bad omens and are practically the symbol of good fortune in other countries.

You know, I am going to keep it simple.
I am going to say death is in love. Death is in love with all of us and we will all see death at least once in our lives.
-

Death is in love! And sometimes Love can be in Death...
Yet Death isn't going to knock on our doors to give us flowers, but Death can still be romantic somehow... <^>

Nah, death gives us thae enternal kiss that we will always remember... So who am I kissing next? <^> lol!
Death can truly be romantic.

*<:) Oh what an awkward silence, Tybalt! Say something! *<:)
-
I think i would say that Death is no good or evil, but rather a neutral force, all he truly does is take people when it is their time... and if Death didn't do this then death in the sense of someone's life ending could not happen, this would break the cycle and could result in the end of life as well...
-
:3
*<:) Oh what an awkward silence, Tybalt! Say something! *<:)
Well if I posted a picture of myself I am sure I would get many comments which would break the silence.
:focus:
Eh, death is death, nothing more, nothing less. Most of the time.
-
Ok people what we have learned so far:
Death is death. -Tybalt
Death is rather a neutral force. - Hunter
Death is just doing his job. - Many people
Death is not evil, it's the act of dying that is scary. Death isn't evil. Death is an angel of mercy. - Kadesh
Death is a part of the life cycle. - Many people
etc etc etc...
Anything to add here? Don't hesitant to comment. 8-)

Death is not a enternal sleep, its a awakening.

Since all things that cause unnecessary harm are, by default, evil, death could be considered evil.
-
I dont see a base classification like "evil" having anything to do with death. It simply reigns in the randomness of life as we know it,excuse me as I know it.For some, say an advanced case of ALCS,death would probably be pleasnt vs. evil. It's one of early man's reasons for the creation of imaginary God's & religions. The need for comfort & control.
I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking. The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides. [Carl Sagan, 1996 in his article In the Valley of the Shadow Parade Magazine Also, Billions and Billions p. 215]
-
I do believe that I'll go on... somehow. How else can I explain the pain of the lady in white down at the bridge that hung herself? Or the rage and hatred from the man by the lake? Or the sweet simplicity of my darling little ghost cat. Crazy? Yeah, I am... but not in the bedlam way. I plan to come back and haunt the out of someone. I just haven't decided who.. or maybe I'll just float around and randomly annoy people... So many people to freak out.. and all of eternity to do it in...
-
Does any one else see death as a female?
-
Only when I look in the mirror! Ha... Joking of course. No, I have the sterotypical view of Death as being male. Never pushed the boundaries on that particular theory.... But now I have something to think about at work.
-
What I think is correct is that Death has no gender :-o but usually I fall to the stereotype of Death being male too.
-
... Please tell me I wasn't the only one who felt death as female!? Son of a lady! I hate being the freak, yet I am often the freak many times.
-
Tyb, if you see Death as a female I bet you can't wait to die. *<:)
-
Look around, TY... there's a lot of them here.... me included.
-
All the deadly monstrous females ARE considered to be death, does that count? <^>
(http://www.funerella.com/graphics/graveyard/albums/gothic/Follow_the_Reaper_by_VvBornOfDesire.jpg)
-
My variations towards death vary. At one point death was a ugly lady with a fat ass! Now well, now she is, actually sortive not there atm.
-
Well the traditional Grim Reaper is a skeleton with a hood on, so actually I still see it has no gender, it's just a skeleton reaper dude. :-D
-
Nah, death could use some good tits to spice things up a bit!
-
Death isnt evil... same as one would ask if birth is good... for me I think that my coming to this world was bad..... it is all a matter of personal view.....
-
Awww don't say that, Monstrous isn't the same without you.
-
Nah, death could use some good tits to spice things up a bit!
...and one big hunk of some other kind of.... meat
~please forgive me, Im into what Vulcans have when they... recreate   :-D, but sometimes the Klingon side wins <^>
-
Hmm.... I'm on Nina's side.... I wouldn't mind death having a nice thick...... steak..... to give me when he comes to get me.
-
Awwwwwwwwww!
I'M NOT HEARING THIS! I'M NOT HEARING THIS!!!
I need Kain, where the fark is Kain when I need him, I need male back up right now! Right now!

Wow, inhe other thread I was joking about being death, now I find that in other threads others joke about me being death. Wow... I just left my self open for Raziel to make some crude joke.
Any way, so we conclude that death has a nice pair of tits and quality meat. I bet death has a wild pussy- CAT! As well.
Wow, deaths a freak! Who knew death was a herm
... If any one raises their hand I swear to that freaky skeleton herm that I will shoot your ass!
-
But if you shoot my ass.. I can still run my mouth... wait... unless Death volunteers to take care of that..
As someone I know always tells me "You didn't get that round mouth from eating square meals." :-fly)
-
Wow, I have to say this... That wasn't even funny.
Go ahead, run your mouth, it will stop what ever sentence you were saying and turn it into OW YOU SON OF A lady!
-
Nah.. I don't actually know his mom.
-
SA13. please try to keep this place neat and tidy. jokes are fine. but no cum stains ok?
-
Nah.. I don't actually know his mom.
Oh so again I am being called death, lol. It doesn't matter who your shot by, the words son of a lady come out or some thing along those lines.
The words that formed from my lips were "YOU DIRTY COCK SUCKING FILTHING F* U& C% K$ I& N$G WHORE COCK SUCKER lady CUNT!!!"
Yeah, that insult was poorly put together, but a bullet tends to release a great deal of anger.
SA13. please try to keep this place neat and tidy. jokes are fine. but no cum stains ok?
Raziel, your making it worse. I am begging you, pure begging you to not make it any worse, I am trying to stop it, please don't make it worse, that will destroy every thing I am trying to do, please please don't make it worse.
-
SA13. please try to keep this place neat and tidy. jokes are fine. but no cum stains ok?
It's fine, but I would have said the same thing about you when you... planted cum stains once.

No.. not really.... When has anything ever really been sacred??
-
everything is sacred.

About what is sacred and what isn't definitely deserves a new topic.
But one thing is for sure, that link ISN'T sacred, lol. And whether it's worth or not, no comments.

Lets see, my food is sacred, I will get pissed if you mess with that, my privacy is sacred, good luck fidning me in my private time, and oh yeah, last but never ever least, my hand cuffs are sacred, I will get pissed if you mess or touch those as well.
-
Wow, maybe it's just me but the only thing sacred to me is the people I love and care about. Touch them and I will come after you here, now, when I am dead, and their after. Guess I am not very materialistic. Bu5t their are few people I know i can truly call friends, and besides family their are even fewer people I would say i love. Just my friends and family. Believe me the people I do them I would do anything to protect. :gun: I mean anything and everything <^> so keep that in mind.....
