How do Zombies live so long
« on: December 13, 2004, 08:35:36 AM »
The Zombies in movies seem to live for a long time. It's true that the classic Romero zombies don't need their bodies to survive, but if they are milling around and chasing people, they are using calories. Does anybody have any ideas as to how zombies could live for a long time. I'm thinking about what could keep them going even after they have eaten most of the non zombie people. I realize that it's just hollywood, but it would be interesting to hear what you think could be an explaination

Because zombies dont fatigue, answers your question about chasing so long. Also whoever raises them and tells them to do something they wont stop untill the dead is done. They useally use zombies as slaves to work for them but in horror movies they would use them to kill people, or they would just wake up themslves and start killin people to eat them. If yhou want to know more there is a zombie part in this same websight

These are both good answers but my question is, and it's just for fun, if someone were to find themselves in a "dawn of the dead scenario", couldn't they just wait until the zombies decay? Despite the fact that zombie movies are frightening, it seems like it would be pretty easy to survive in such a situation, provided that you had some warning. What do you think?

I think that's just the thing, really. Nobody had any warning in any of these movies at all. One day things are normal, the next day WHAM! you're knee-deep in zombies.

Also, a corpse take a pretty damned long time to rot to nothing...  In DotD, Romeros zombies had a decay-factor as the movie progressed. In the beginning they all look pretty fresh, and then as it goes on they look more and more gross depending. Grant that if this trend continues, there'd be nothing left of them, but that might take up to a couple of months. Compound that with the fact that the longer these Zombies are running around biting and killing people, more, fresh zombies are being created all the time. So all-in-all you might be looking at close to a year before a city is even remotely inhabitable again. Now, hiding out in a mall like that wouldn't let you last for a year. You probably wouldn't last for a month after the power goes out and the refrigerators in the food court shut off... but if you could get a generator, keep the place secure, and ration appropriately (not to mention being able to eat semi-rotting food) then you might be able to last a little longer. But it's still not a good situation. Security can't last that long.

On a better note, if you lived further north, you might have an easier time of it. You'd only have to wait around 6 months for the zombies to freeze when it gets cold. Bundle yourself up, get yourself a nice, heavy pipe or a hammer, or what-not and go zombie-smashin' on a nice winter day. Just watch out for a sudden thaw....

PS: this is a really sloppy post... I could go on and on about zombie movies (I love them). Anyway... I juts posted my quick-and-dirty response to the questions at hand...

The general broader answer is that whatever causes zombification also retards the decomposition process. A good overview is in Max Brooks' "Zombie Survival Guide".

For one. in what movies do zombies acctualy have a purpose other then walking and killing. Or as movie makers put it the basic needs of survival. That need is to feed. But if it is dead why does it need to feed and where does this need come from. sure it could be there the 10 days or how ever long it is for the brain to de but other then that the need is where?? That's what confuses me

It depends on the type of zombie; you have your magical zombies, raised by a necromancer or something, and your virus carrying zombies. The magical ones obviously wouldnt die for obvious reasons, and the virus infected zombies would not die until their brain parished. For example, if their lungs stopped working, eventually so would their brain; also they would die if their cirulatory system stopped, because if blood isnt getting to the brain then neither is oxygen. Lack of oxygen would also be why they often move very slowly, beacuse without it your body just stops working. If you ever work out and it becomes extremely hard to move, its because your muscles arnt recieving enough oxygen; eventually the zombies wouldnt be able to move at all, though in the beginning they can move fairly normally. Too, their bodies would stop working if they didnt eat, and, inevitably, they would eat eachother as well as anything that moved.

that's true. But what about the chemical zombies that live with out there lungs. or had there lungs taken out when they die. The ussaly live just as long. I think chemical zombies are all only dependent on the brain

Braaaaaaiiiiinnns. They survive so long on braaaaiiiinnnnss. That and have you ever seen a zombie? They shuffle about slowly and lazily, they don't burn energy that fast.
