The idea of Godzilla originated in march of 1954 when a young Japanese movie executive was on his way back from to Japan from an unsuccessful trip as he had not been able to secure visas for some actors for a movie. On his flight back on the plane he picked up his newspaper and started to read. The headline said JAPANS 2nd ATOMIC BOMBING or something to that effect the article said that the USA had tested an H-Bomb at Bikini Island and had asked all ships to stay away while the tests were being conducted. Anyway the paper said that a Japanese fishing boat called the LuckyDragon had been struck by the blast. Both the USA and Japan blamed each other for the incedent and the crew of the boat had been nuked and an SOS had been called for rescue boats. The executive put down his paper and started writing words DRAGON H-BOMB BOAT ATOMIC BLAST. When his plane landed in Tokyo he went to the movie studio he worked for TOHO Studios. He pitched an idea of a movie about a giant radioactive monster that attacks Tokyo the studio heads liked the idea. An idea for a giant Octopus attacking Tokyo was given but seen that Dinosaur movies were popular at the time an idea for a large mutated radioactive Dinosaur was chosen. The Dinosuar was later named Gojira a.k.a. Godzilla. The executive who pitched the idea became the producer of the movie his name was Tomoyuki Tanaka. Tanaka had Ishiro Honda direct and Eiji Tsuburaya for special effects and Akira Ifukube compose music for the movie. The movie itself had been based on a real life incedent that took place at Bikini Island. Godzilla was a monster that represented all the horror of the H-Bomb. When the movie was almost complete the monster had not yet ben given a name and a studio employee who was pretty big for a Jap a Mr Gojira is who the monster was named after. The name Gojira itself is the combintation of 2 words the word Gorira and the word Kujira Gorira means Gorilla and Kijira means Whale the 2 words together are Gojira. Producer Tanaka told the press the monster was named Gojira because it was as strong as a Gorilla and as big as a Whale the press ate up the story and loved it. The movie Gojira/Godzilla opened a few months later on november 3rd 1954. The movie became an international success and Tanaka produced 21 more Godzilla movies 22 in all up til his death in 1996. The last Godzilla movie Tanaka made was Godzilla vs. Destroyer 1995. The Godzilla series was resurected in 1999 and the last Godzilla movie was Godzilla Final Wars in 2004 the 50th Anniversary Godzilla movie and the 28th godzilla movie.[/b]

Suit Actor Haruo Nakajima who wore the Godzilla suit in 1954 said he
lost 20 lbs while wearing the suit he said it was so hot inside he had to
remove his clothes all but his shorts and socks. Nakajima also said the
suit was so hot that while filming he passed out a couple of time as the
suit weghed about 200 lbs. Haruo Nakajima said they would have to stop
filming every 5 minutes to pour water on him to cool him down.
Nakajima played the part of Godzilla for 18 years in 12 Godzilla movies
from 1954 to 1972. Haruo said of all the monsters he played in Jap
monster movies Godzilla is the hardest to play and thats why very few
have been Godzilla as it is not as easy job and very few can do it.
Todays Godzilla suit is a bit more advanced than the ones made from
the 50s and 70s. The suits made from the 80s to present serve more
than 1 function. The actor can make the eyes go back and forth open
and close. The suit is waterproof and the actor can make the tail move
up and down side to side. And on top of that there is a built in fan so the
actor is not as hot inside as he would have been in the old days.
Kenpachuro Satsuma says the suit might be a little lighter and easier
to move in but now you have to opperate the suit from the inside
instead of just walking around in it. Its still a tough job.

I'll take that as a yes.

Hi Shadowling yeah you could say I am a fan of Godzilla right now I am super excited about G-Fest this coming july. G-Fest is a Godzilla convention held in Chicago each year. Anyway this year last years Godzilla movie Godzilla Final Wars will be showing at the Pickwick Theatr near the convention it will be 1 of 3 movies that will be shown for G-fest attendees. I am hoping to get a few things like maybe a few more movie posters. Bandai figures etc. Aside from Godzilla I also enjoy regular horror and scifi movies.

I actually like a number of the Godzilla films. Yes, they look silly and the buildings look like the actor is stomping on cardboard boxes, but that's part of their charm and appeal. Sometimes a corney film can be a really good one.
-
ITS NOT A CORNY FILM!*claws come out*
-
IT IS A CORNY FILM! *zapper and tazer come out*
-
Who cares if its corny or not its a good film they are all except that US one. Godzilla is the King of the Monters. Its nice watching him stomp around Tokyo.
