What Can We Say From The Facts?

The Mayans were a civilization that rose at about 200 AD and fell at about 900 AD. During that time, they built these huge buildings (I forgot what they were called) so their priests could watch the stars to decide what the best times for religious festivals would be. From that they gained knowlegde about astronomy, and from that information they created a calender.
This is what I've heard. This is my opinion, though: back in the early AD years, there was absolutely nothing to do, so a couple guys got together and made a calender. It ended on December 21, 2012 because they got bored of it after awhile, went to a local pub, and forgot all about it. What do you think? :)
