Disappearing Bolt?
« on: August 29, 2010, 06:14:07 AM »
Background Information Necessary to Understand:
*In a house I use to live in, I use to have this gigantic shelf that ran from one end of my walk in closet to the other. Mind you, the closet was long enough to do suicide sprints in. The only place it didn't run across was the door. This closet, and it's slightly smaller clone were attached to the two bedrooms that took up almost the whole upstairs. The only other rooms was a small bathroom between the two rooms and the small hall for the landing of the stairs.
*There was a spirit there who introduced himself to me as Jak and to fellow friends of mine. He loved to appear to you near the closet or attic latter. Generally at night.
*He hated it when people said he wasn't real. Hated it.

Now to the story:
I had tried to talk to my brother about the spirit, hoping to get shared understanding and knowledge and to verify that I wasn't losing my mind (like my Mother always told me when I had brought up my 'invisible friends' to her when I was younger). He flat out said I was full of it, and that it was just my imagination running away with me. I started to believe him. I told him 'I guess you're right... I need to stop playing so many video games and watching so many horror movies.' I retired to my room and laid in bed for a bit when I saw the figure at my closet door. It was odd cause there was still a lot of daylight left in the day. I got out of bed and started to my closet.
I opened the door, and it was blistering in there. Normal seeing as the poor thing didn't have instillation--if it had been a hot day. The heat only lasted on the left side so I wrote it off as someone cooking downstairs and it was seeping up through the floor (not the first time it's happened). I turned to inspect the other side, where we stored the Christmas stuff and such. I got about halfway through when I heard something to my right. I looked at the shelf and noticed the support's screw was missing. I had a moment to think 'that's odd' before the shelf that was helped up by nothing suddenly topped over, towards me!
Thank god I had the sense of mind to grab the shelf and hold it up against the part of the wall that jutted out to help the shelf supports. I started shouting for my brother. He came in seconds and when he saw what had happened, he started to yell at me about breaking the house. He unloaded the things off the shelf and we let the thing fall then. We searched everywhere for the bolt, but couldn't find it. I researched for it after he told my Mother. She said if I couldn't fix it before she found somewhere else to live, then I was going to pay for the new bolt (I didn't have a job and couldn't afford a Gum Ball!).

After a few months of little to no activity, I sat in front of my bookshelf, clearing out the childish things that I could finally let go of when I heard something from behind me. 'Sorry' was all I caught of the muttering. I thought it was my brother and I asked 'for what?' There was a knock sound moments later from the closet and I thought it was the house settling. I asked again 'for what?' and turned to look for my brother. I had forgotten he was at a club meeting and wouldn't be home for another few hours. I was alone in the house. I got up and grabbed a softball bat from the box of childish-things (wish I had kept it now...) and held it up. I started towards the closet door where I had heard the knock. I reached for the handle and hesitated. 'I should just call the police...' I remember thinking but slapped myself mentally. I'd look funny calling if there was nothing there. It would be like having the president check my bed for monsters. I grabbed the door handle and yanked the door open. I stepped in, bat raised, and ready to kick the ass of--
A bolt laying at my feet.
I was dumbfounded and put my bat down as I picked the screw up. In the words of Dr. Seuss's Grinch, I puzzled and puzzled until my puzzler was sore. I turned to leave, thinking I'd call my Mom when I tripped over the shelf and into the wall. I hadn't noticed it's slow progress into the door way until after the fact. That was when I put things together and fell on my ass, near tears, and apologizing my ass off.

I had offended not only a spirit, but someone I had viewed as a friend the whole time I had lived there. I felt horrible. I kept crying in that closet until it was cool in there. I only stopped when I felt safe, comfortable, and forgiveness all around me. I remember subconsciously grabbing at the air against my arms, as if to hold someone who was hugging me there for a while longer.

I have long since moved away from that house, but I drive by it here and there. I don't feel welcome in the lower level, but where my room was, I can still sense safety. Whoever is in that house now is very lucky, and will be safe.

That's my ghostly encounter that sticks out the most and touches my heart the most. Thanks for reading.

Me too. If I could know for sure if he was happy to see me there or if I just brought a slight smile to him... I don't know how to explain how much that would make me happy...
