Ok so I am forming a paranormal research investigation team and I was wondering if anyone can come up with good names that can have fun initials like my friends team's name is Supernatural investigations (aka the S.I unit). So far I have come up with Paranormal supernatural investigations or paranormal scientific investigations (PSI) or paranormal scientific investigation research (PSI R ... if you sound it out is sounds like a noble lol). Research of paranormal phenomenon (ROPP) yeah something along those lines. you guys pick because I am making this happen and shoot me some ideas. thank you!!!

kind of both its going to be a school funded club/organization so when i gradutate i wont be part of it any more but i can get them started. I am going to continue after college but more on the hobby level and help someday fund and donate money to this organization.

I hate to be a killjoy Rave, but I think a jolly, abbreviated or 'fun' name for a group invariably sounds amateurish......  People (prospective 'clients', for wont of a better word) tend to look on such things as non-too-serious and would rather engage with a group which sounds 'pokerfaced' about their pursuits, etc.  As examples of the former, we have an all female group called 'Haunted Hussies' a couple of towns away from me and another called 'Spirit-Seekers', etc, etc.

Personally speaking, I'd just incorporate something to do with your geographical location - town, state, or whatever - or perhaps the school itself in your situation, into a reasonably standard 'paranormal related' framework....... ie 'Paranormal Research Group', 'Ghost Society', or whatever.

I know it's a really boring alternative, but it seems to set a better foundation for future generations, rather that something fun, but gimmicky.

I choose to disagree with that.

A name people remember and can be related to the work of the group in a lateral compared to literal way, is always a good choice for a company name.

For example which is more (for lack of a better word) enticing and memorable?

Hungry Jacks or Brisbane Fast Food?

But, of course, there is a big difference between a fast food emporium (for example) and an allegedly serious, research concern.

I have made a study of the 50 plus groups which have appeared in the area in which I live over the past 20 years and all of the catchy, faddy concerns have a life of 2 to 3 years maximum........  (Most failing well within the first year of activity).

In your area Enderfay, Rave's area could have entirely different preferences.

Although this paranormal reasearch investigation team seems serious enough, it is also a extra-curricular activity. The reason fast-food joints have such catchy/quirky names is partly because it generally attracts the younger generation (sorry MB I'm going to put you in the anomaly section for this one) therefore as a school group, they may gain more members due to the same reason.

Sure, it may be easier to identify why the business exists if the name is more straight forward however, 'Paranormal Research Group' and 'Ghost Society' are quite standard names and could belong to quite a few groups in the area which could lead to some confusion or innacurate referrals.

If this is a school based group which really is gathering for shared-interest purposes instead of professional purposes then S.P.I.R.I.T is unique, memorable and fits the purpose perfectly well.

Well thanks but this isn't knowledge, it's logic. 

However you are probably right about actual businesses (especially in smaller towns) acquiring more clients when they have less 'faddy' names.

My reasoning - especially when it comes to the paranormal - is purely logic based, Ryobi.   A catchy title is possibly the best way forward these days - mid-way / towards the end of the current, global paranormal furore - but when it comes to the less hysterical, serious side of the coin, I'd reason that a firm foundation is the best foot forward. 

As mentioned, the study of local groups in my area - and a general, watchful eye nationally, for that matter - speaks volumes.  The 'spirits-this' and the 'spooky- that' disappear as quickly as they came - 1 to 3 years max - but the more serious associations are anything up to 20 years old and still going strong.....  The W.M.G.C. was the first research group in this county for almost 20 years when it was founded in 1989, closely followed by one other within a year or so.  Another few years down the line and another, solitary group appeared (this one very short lived indeed, however) until 1998 when another turned up.  At this point, the British paranormal frenzy began and, in the last 10 years alone, some 45 plus clubs were formed..... the bulk of which fizzled out again within a very short period of time.  Of course, this latter mentioned demise has everything to do with attaining and maintaining a sufficient case-load - and healthy, logical attitude towards the subject - as to merit the continuance of an association..... however such sentiments are frequently reflected in the way that you initially front / forward your group - i.e. in its name.
