Title: Doomsday Preppers
Post by: Nina on June 27, 2011, 01:30:10 PM
Dennis McClung has created a self-sustaining garden out of an unused pool in his backyard. If the end of days ever comes, he'll be all set.

How many of us are truly self sustainable?

That's cool, but surviving isn't going to be about being able to survive now. It will most likely be about adapting to survive in the days to come. I don't think a self-sustaining garden would come in handy if its all becomes doused in radiation (lame example, but no time to do better right now).

As for survival now, I can survive in the wild on my own. So no worry there. And no, not camping lol. I mean actual survival, without man-made tools.

True, there's 50% chance that that garden wont be able to survive the disaster, but still, if possible to have something like this prepared and if it does survive, that gives you more chance...

if it hits you it hits you, your dead and what comes is not of your concern. your dead. period. but good to have mind occupied :)

Pshaw, I'm a conspiracy theorist. My minds always occupied. And besides, he can have his garden. If it survives, I'll just take it from him.  :gun:

Its alot harder to be self sustainable these days than it used to be.  More people meens more housing, which meens less room to grow things.  It also meens fewer woodlands which meens poorer quallity of hunting.

Its not all that hard for one person who knows what they are doing to survive indefinatly in the wild...but to suport an entire family would be much more dificult.

In an end of the world situation we would have to decide wheather to stay where we are, defend what we have..... which will eventually run out, or become nomads... moving all the time.   Either way, there would always be someone wanting to take what ever you have.  Its a good idea to be able to defend it.

In case of doomsday i think priorities change. Its not about a crystal vase ur granny left you and ur warm bed. People will have to change the way they live, and for those that have no survival abilities it will be pretty damn hard. Staying in an area with too much people (or too little as well) could mean way lesser means to survive (food, water, medicine). One family alone cannot survive, people will go back to tribal hierarchy and system. Meaning, u need at least 5 families to be able to sustain all.

In a post-dooms day living situation, it would be about balance. Enough to survive, but not so much as to grab the attention of others. Me, I like living off the land from time to time. Its not hard to find what you need in the wild. And even if the wild is destroyed, I can survive still. Nomads is a good strategy, but with that you sacrifice having a sturdy location to be safe in. Of course, with a sturdy location, you become a target. Personally, I'd be for building a settlement. But to get people to help, I would need to make them believe that being a part of it would guarantee them better safety than their current situation. Not too hard. I also know well how to shoot and maintain firearms. And of course how to use things that don't shoot, and how to improvise. I'd like to think I'd do decently in a dooms day situation, but I couldn't say for sure until actually in said situation.

Depending on your situation, some people would have no choice but to relocate. Anyone living in large cities would be screwed once all the caned foods and such were looted. Gangs would have the uper hand. They would eventualy rule the cities with no police force to opose them.

I live in an area where I am relativly lucky compaired to allot of people. I know places where springs come straight out the side of the mountain. That water source would be pretty hard to contaminate. I also have allot of friends here. Most of them are nuts, but they all own and know how to maintain fire arms.

Not to toot my own horn, but in a post dooms day world I would become very valuable. I was tought by my Grandfather things that very few have learned in generations.  I know how to make gun powder, how to tan animal hides, I know everything that grows wild in my area that can be eaten or used for medicine. I can make traps for either animals or humans.
The list goes on...

Things of value will become food, water, clothing, blankets. (It gets much harder to make it in the winter time) and of course weapons and ammo. Tools like knives, axes.  Horses and such will become the new meens of transportation eventually. Gold and silver will always be valued, more by some than others....

Total chaos............for a while....... then we will revert to the old ways of life.
And for the survivers perhaps a better way of life?

Cites would mainly be bad because over time the buildings will began their fall. As for medicine, I don't use medicine right now anyways. Always prefer my body to fend for itself, and I'm still alive. I do have friends with their own skills, and fortunately they are people I can trust. I don't know how to tan hides as you do (which damn, would have been a very useful skill), but skinning and gutting animals is a pretty easy thing. If others still find gold and silver to be of value, good for me. I'll trade them for things I need. As for eventually going to the old ways, its questionable. I mean, we'd have to work together for that. And even then, I think we would pass through some of the phases of government we've had in the past before reaching one closer to the modern day version.

Ideally, the solar activity in 2012, combined with nuclear Holocaust will allow me to mutate. I am hoping to become self sufficient and not need edible nourishment. I am also hoping to maintain my human form as well, but mutations are more random.

So as of now, I am using edible nourishment to live. I am confident in my ability to live, I have not died once in 18 years. I think with that track record, I should be safe.

Now with all my lame jokes aside, I am looking into growing my own food. Assuming radiation won't ruin it, I will have some food for any possible, doomsday scenario. I don't like the idea of survival tools being left out in the open, or any item of value being in the open. Other individuals, who may be Vicious, might try to claim them. The best option is to keep everything indoors, but that also has faults.

I'm working on my plans, I'm good for a week right now, but any longer and I would have to go and forage.. Looks like my plan needs some revision....

Now regarding the two videos, I was rather impressed. I thought the ideas were innovative, logical and economical. I would actually try to attempt the same thing.  (But that costs money, which I lack) So to make up, I am reading wilderness survival materials, so that I may use the knowledge for foraging.

I'm not really any better off then anyone else here, but I am at least trying to get some knowledge.. That should count for something..

Someone somewhere will need your skill matthew, whatever said skill may be. And besides, hide what you'd like. I'm sure I can still find it if need be. Besides, I actually plan to establish my own settlement if the day ever came. I have planned for various scenarios, such is the life accompanied by paranoia.

I am actually pretty delicious, I would also eat myself if possible.  *<:)

Don't worry about it, I found it funny. However, if we employ cannibalism, everyone is fair game. If someone is trying to eat me, I should have the right to try and ingest them.

If human meat is anywhere close to pork, I will be a happy serial killer.. I mean, man...

Perhaps we should make a human cook book, just in case?

*Laughs*

This reminds me of when my English class had to do a paper on lord of the flies, and I told the class that if I had to share an island with them, if they didn't pull their weight in camp I'd eat them. Kill them while they were asleep, and turn them into hamburger.  :-P

Although in the doomsday scenario, it kinda depends what happens. Nukes...ick. Zombies...pretty cool. Finally get to play G.T.A in real life.
