WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States government is attacking conspiracy theories about the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York as the fifth anniversary of September 11 approaches.

According to a Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll carried out in July, more than one-third of Americans suspect U.S. officials helped in the September 11 attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could later go to war.

The State Department responded this week with a rebuttal of World Trade Center demolition theories and doubts about other events of the day that abound on the Internet.

It listed some of the most prevalent September 11 myths, led by claims the twin towers were destroyed by secretly planted explosives, not burning passenger jets.

"This is how the collapses may have appeared to non-experts, but demolition experts point out many differences," said a department "special feature" available at http://usinfo.state.gov/media/misinformation.html.

Demolition professionals always blow the bottom floors of a structure first, while the collapses began at upper levels -- where the hijacked Boeing 767s hit, it said.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed on September 11. The Bush administration responded by leading an invasion of Afghanistan and, in 2003, of Iraq.

'CORRECTIVE' EFFORT

The State Department was providing "corrective information" in response to misinformation in the media and on the Internet, said Joanne Moore, a department spokeswoman.

The information in the rebuttal was not new, she added, but drawn from public sources.

In a similar vein, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology posted a "fact sheet" on its Web site on Wednesday in question-and-answer format responding to alternative theories about the fire and the collapse.

NIST, which carried out a three-year investigation, concluded the towers collapsed after being hit by separate, fuel-laden aircraft flown by hijackers.

The resulting fire, which reached temperatures as high as 1,000 degrees C (1,800 degrees F), led to an inward bowing of perimeter columns and subsequent collapses, NIST found in 43 volumes that comprise a final report issued last October.

In putting out its answers to 14 questions about the World Trade Center, NIST, an arm of the Commerce Department, said its findings did not support the "pancake theory" of collapse premised on a progressive failure of floor systems consistent with a controlled demolition.

"NIST is a group of government scientists whose leaders are Bush appointees, and therefore their report is not likely to veer from the political story," said Kevin Ryan, an editor of the online Journal of 9/11 studies.

Ryan says he was a former site manager of a division of Underwriters Laboratories, an independent, not-for-profit product-safety testing and certification organization.

"The more information we learn about this investigation, the more concerned we become," he said.

they present a good arguement, and i'm tempted to believe that bush would most definitly have done something like this to further his own agenda...but i really don't want to believe our government would do such a thing, i suppose it wouldn't be the firsrt time though.

i don't know, maybe i listen to too much neil bortz?  ;)

An article from MSN today about the rise in 9/11 conspiracy believers:

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14723997/ (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14723997/)

Here's some excerpts, with opinion from both sides (those who believe there was gov't complicity, and those who don't)

Quote
He felt no shiver of doubt in those first terrible hours.

He watched the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and assumed al-Qaeda had wreaked terrible vengeance. He listened to anchors and military experts and assumed the facts of Sept. 11, 2001, were as stated on the screen.

It was a year before David Ray Griffin, an eminent liberal theologian and philosopher, began his stroll down the path of disbelief. He wondered why Bush listened to a child's story while the nation was attacked and how Osama bin Laden, America's Public Enemy No. 1, escaped in the mountains of Tora Bora.

He wondered why 110-story towers crashed and military jets failed to intercept even one airliner. He read the 9/11 Commission report with a swell of anger. Contradictions were ignored and no military or civilian official was reprimanded, much less cashiered.

"To me, the report read as a cartoon." White-haired and courtly, Griffin sits on a couch in a hotel lobby in Manhattan, unspooling words in that reasonable Presbyterian minister's voice. "It's a much greater stretch to accept the official conspiracy story than to consider the alternatives."

Such as?

"There was massive complicity in this attack by U.S. government operatives."

If that feels like a skip off the cliff of established reality, more Americans are in free fall than you might guess. There are few more startling measures of American distrust of leaders than the widespread belief that the Bush administration had a hand in the attacks of Sept. 11 in order to spark an invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Quote
Chip Berlet, senior analyst at Political Research Associates, a Boston-based left-leaning think tank, is no fan of the 9/11 Commission. He believes a serious investigation should have led to indictments and the firing of incompetent generals and civilian officials.

But he has no patience with the conspiracy theorists.

"They don't do their homework; it's a kind of charlatanism," Berlet says over the phone. "They say there's no debris on the lawn in front of the Pentagon, but they base their analysis on a photo on the Internet . That's like analyzing an impressionist painting by looking at a postcard."

Now comes a loud sigh.

"I love 'The X-Files' but I don't base my research on it," he says. "My vision of hell is having to review these [conspiracy] books over and over again."

Let's move on to Eager of MIT. "Demolition experts say, 'Ohhh, it's all science and timing.' Bull!" Eager says. "What's the technique? If 200,000 tons gives way, where do you think it's going? Straight down."

In the days after Sept. 11, experts claimed temperatures reached 2,000 degrees on the upper floors. Others claimed steel melted. Nope. What happened, Eager says, is that jet fuel sloshed around and beams got rubbery.

"It's not too much to think that you could have some regions at 900 degrees and others at 1,200 degrees, and that will distort the beams."

The truth movement doesn't really care for Eager. A Web site casts a fisheye of suspicion at the professor and his colleagues. "Did the MIT have prior knowledge?" notes one chat room. "This is for sure another speculative topic . . . "

Jordyn, well i'd say we are talking about an extremely small faction of government officials who were/are "in the know" about any of this in terms of planning and foreknowledge. Maybe a few hundred people within the US government/military ranks, and a few dozen heads of major corporations/media/entertainment ect, ect who had some kind of direct knowledge of what was going to occure. I don't even think that Bush JR knew the exact day that the disaster was going to happen, though he probably knew that SOMETHING was going to happen in order to go to war with Iraq...

And many of those within government, or even secret societies, who question the events of 911 have all taken oaths, sworn secrecy, or honestly think that all of this is for the benefit of America and national security.. Not to mention their own personal safety..

It isn't necessarily that "our government" is evil, though we can only look at the origins of America and the slaughter of millions of Native Americans and Mexicans who were seen as "heathens" when compared to the puritan movement and Crusaders of the New World..

And then the hundreds of years of slavery, of political assassination, of corruption, of international banking interests, of media manipulation, of human experimentation, of wars for money, wars for oil, wars for territory and religious idealogy.. All for the benefit of carving out this coveted "New World Order" that has been in the planning for decades, and even hundreds or thousands of years..

It goes so deep that the majority of people in government and politics would rather avoid the issue all-together than face the facts of what really transpired that day. And continues to transpire before our very eyes on a daily basis..

you sound like my husband.  ;)

we have these discussions frequently, my eyes were opened to the history of our government, learning in school how noble and good they were..and then i went to college and started to realize what was really done to the native americans...i guess that's when the first seeds of mistrust for those who are in control of our country first took root.  it's sort of interesting that it's coming to light, it's going to be harder and harder for them to cover up these things if they are indeed...covering it up.

it's just depressing that a government that's supposed to be an example for the rest of the world is as corrupt as those they take extreme steps to quelch.

What bugs me about all the 9/11 conspiracy theories is the lengths they'll go to in order for their theories to get as far from what actually happened as possible. For example, if you look in the article I posted earlier, they talk about a guy trying to convince people that there weren't actually any planes crashing into the WTC. No planes...  :-o I don't know what that dude is smoking, but he must be paying primo for it.

I understand.. But there are plenty of people out there who get paid to promote bogus 'conspiracy' theories, and not just concerning 911, but all variety of hogwash..

Though it's perhaps most damaging when regarding 911 and you've got all these bozos talking about UFO's flying around the building, or the biggest conspiracy of them all.. That Bin Laden or Bush planned it all alone.. They don't see that Dems and Republicans are really two sides of the same coin, and one will continue the work of the other on the road to the New World Order...

Unfortunately, i think that many people think that Bush is the sole problem, and that once he's out of office everything will be better....

American's believe that about every president that isn't in their party.  IMO, 90% of politicians are crooks and the other 10% are just new at it!  America needs to get back to electing Statesmen and ont Politicians.  Some of the darkhorse canidates may cause just enough ruckus if elected to get some honest folk in there....

 :focus:

Conspiracies will always fly when something like this happens.  I believe a person needs to know that their own motivations are true and then let the chips fall where they may.
