You are letting me go bonkers in this thread?  :-)

Well, according to the U.S. government, we have nothing to fear and we should completely trust them.

Conspiracy theories exist in the realm of myth, where imaginations run wild, fears trump facts, and evidence is ignored. As a superpower, the United States is often cast as a villain in these dramas. ”

See problem solved... or it would be, if it wasn't for:

1) Project MKULTRA - This is about LSD-based mind control, but a CIA veteran revealed that:

Although the CIA insists that MKULTRA-type experiments have been abandoned, 14-year CIA veteran Victor Marchetti has stated in various interviews that the CIA routinely conducts disinformation campaigns and that CIA mind control research continued. In a 1977 interview, Marchetti specifically called the CIA claim that MKULTRA was abandoned a "cover story."

You gotta love Mr. Marchetti, who also wrote:

The real reason for the official secrecy, in most instances, is not to keep the opposition (the CIA's euphemistic term for the enemy) from knowing what is going on; the enemy usually does know. The basic reason for governmental secrecy is to keep you, the American public, from knowing - for you, too, are considered the opposition, or enemy – so that you cannot interfere. When the public does not know what the government or the CIA is doing, it cannot voice its approval or disapproval of their actions. In fact, they can even lie to your about what they are doing or have done, and you will not know it. As for the second advantage, despite frequent suggestion that the CIA is a rogue elephant, the truth is that the agency functions at the direction of and in response to the office of the president. All of its major clandestine operations are carried out with the direct approval of or on direct orders from the White House. The CIA is a secret tool of the president – every president. And every president since Truman has lied to the American people in order to protect the agency. When lies have failed, it has been the duty of the CIA to take the blame for the president, thus protecting him. This is known in the business as "plausible denial." The CIA, functioning as a secret instrument of the U.S. government and the presidency, has long misused and abused history and continues to do so.

2) Operation Northwoods - For those pesky fools who don't believe high up officials would ever want to harm you.

In short, it was a false flag operation intended to garner support for the cuban war. It was rejected by Kennedy and several other individuals with a bumper sticker understanding of morality.

By the way, it'd seem that John F. Kennedy was quite involved in this thing, looking into the wikipedia article. Was the rejection of this plan one reason that he was killed?

Following presentation of the Northwoods plan, Kennedy removed Lyman Lemnitzer as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, although he became Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in January 1963. American armed forces leaders began to perceive Kennedy as going soft on Cuba, and the President became increasingly unpopular with the military, a rift that came to a head during Kennedy's disagreements with the service chiefs over the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Indeed.

Methinks that this is also why the 9/11 inside job idea became popular. Call me a generalizer, but sometimes I get the feeling that Bush really would allow for something like 9/11 to garner support on his "war on terror." The muslim hijackers that might agree to such a conspiracy would probably love the idea of blowing up a couple of American buildings.

3) Operation COINTELPRO - Because you thought the FBI was innocent in comparison to the CIA?

COINTELPRO (an acronym for Counter Intelligence Program) was a series of covert, and often illegal, projects conducted by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and disrupting domestic political organizations.
COINTELPRO tactics included discrediting targets through psychological warfare, planting false reports in the media, smearing through forged letters, harassment, wrongful imprisonment, extralegal violence and assassination. Covert operations under COINTELPRO took place between 1956 and 1971; however, the FBI has used covert operations against domestic political groups since its inception. The FBI's stated motivation at the time was "protecting national security, preventing violence, and maintaining the existing social and political order."

Which is why they also targeted the civil rights movement.

According to the Church Commitee, founded by Frank Church, designed to expose this stuff for what it is:

Many of the techniques used would be intolerable in a democratic society even if all of the targets had been involved in violent activity, but COINTELPRO went far beyond that...the Bureau conducted a sophisticated vigilante operation aimed squarely at preventing the exercise of First Amendment rights of speech and association, on the theory that preventing the growth of dangerous groups and the propagation of dangerous ideas would protect the national security and deter violence.

Oh, but we should trust our government... yes.

Those are just three of a heavy load of conspiracies that have otherwise been proven true, as opposed to just being theories. More research can be done on one's own time, I suppose.

Oh... and off-world intelligent beings, along with an Earth/Terra-indigenous Reptilian species, (they really are nice folks, I'm not sure where all the "evil Reptilian" woo comes from), currently inhabit the subterranean world that a couple of high end officials know about, but you don't need to know about that. Go back to sleep...  :)zzz
