Totems are animals and spirits of animals that can be invoked as your guide they lend their wisdom and strength to the one whom invoked them. They do not control you and having a wolf totem does not mean that you yourself are a wolf spirit in a human body. However being a therian means that you are an animal spirit in a human body. Therians can have totem animals to help guide them as can regular people.
