Arthur C. Clarke



This man is one of the reasons for the thought that humankind is only limited by its imagination.  He along with other science fiction authors helped open up the minds of young scientists.  Here is a time line of his life:

1934: Joins the British Interplanetary Society

1936: Joins the British Civil Service and begins to write articles on space exploration in his spare time

1941-6: Is a radar instructor in the RAF

1945: His essay published in "Wireless World" predicts the use of satellite communication.

1946:  Rescue party, is published (his first sci-fi story)

1948: Against the Fall of Night, is published (his first sci-fi novel)

1950: Interplanetary Flight is published (his first non-fiction book)

1962: Wins UNESCO's Kalinga Prize for his popularization of science.

1968: He and Stanley Kubrick release 2001: A Space Odyssey

1989 Awarded the honor of Companion of the British Empire

1994 Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

1998 Knighted by the Queen of England



Interesting Facts:

He was the first person to suggest placing satellites in geosynchronous orbit to allow TV shows to be shown world wide.
Was the first person to use a book to present a powerful argument for space exploration
Earned the nickname "Ego" because of his huge ego and he even signed an early story "E.G. O'Brien"
"We will never really know much about the universe when we are still crawling around in the playpen of the Solar System" Arthur C. Clarke.

2001: A Space Odyssey is an amazing movie.

Hammer of God is a great short story of his, really sober look at the future.
