My dad owns a black cat and I haven't had any bad luck for some odd reason

The_Seeker

Try having a black cat in a dark stairwell and then you'll know bad luck!  Also, I think I read somewhere that in the UK it's white cats that are bad luck.  Could be wrong, my memory is a little foggy.

Just because a cats fur is black, doesnt mean that its any more special as a white cat. Its like say 'OMG dont walk by the black guy! You'll have bad luck!' I dont understand where this whole black cat association came from, but its really not logical, even for a magician.

If I had a guess, I would say that the myth comes from someone tripping over one black cat and proclaiming that all black cats are evil.  Then again, wasn't there a pope who declared all cats to be agents of Satan and thus led to the executions of millions of cats throughout all of Europe?

EDIT:It was Pope Innocent VIII.  However, as a complete 180 the recent pope is known as quite the cat lover (especially a black cat).

Thats aweful! Im sure the people in Egypt fell over when they heard that.

Egyptians liked cats, but they weren't obsessed with them. Bastet (the cat god) was a minor deity. Cat's stick out because they aren't really worshiped or praised at all in anyother culture. That and they are tiny, domestic animals, so they were commonly mummified, increasing our perseption of their value.

I don't trust black cats, they all remind me of  Begemot in Mikhail Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita"

But that wasn't all: as a third in that company appeared a cat, from who knows where, huge like a pig, black like soot or a raven, and with outrageous cavalryman's whiskers.
17
("A Restless Day") Black, sturdy, like a hippopotamus.
22
("By Candlelight") The cat, standing on his back paws and powdered, bowed before Margarita. Now on the cat's neck appeared a white dress tie, and on his chest a mother-of-pearl lady's binoculars on a thin strap. In addition, the cat's whiskers were gilded.
27
("The End of Apartment 50") Putting aside the primus, he then grabbed a Browning [hand gun] from behind his back.
