Curious Pain

Alright, so I've had many quirky problems and things that happen to me but one particular seems to be problematic here and there. For some reason, when I'm around certain people who are in physical pain, I feel said pain too. For example, one of my friends started cutting again after over a year and the minute she walked into the room my arm was burning with pain, it felt as if I had my wrist cut. Usually it's not a problem and it rarely happens around anyone. Heck, I can even count the number of times it's happened on one hand.

...but I'm worried it might be a problem. My art professor/adviser injured her wrist in an accident. Due to several bad surgeries, now her arm is much more damaged than the initial injury. She can still use it but she is in deep pain a lot of the time. A few days ago, a friend of mine with a lot of psychic abilities (mostly centered around healing and sensing) walked into the room. As soon as he started helping her with her arm, I began to get a sharp, nagging pain in my own arm. That wasn't the only thing though, the more he worked with my professor's arm, the more anxious, uncomfortable and stressed I felt. By the time he was done, I was clutching my head and almost in tears.

It's quite a curious situation. I'm not that worried about it. I just want to know two things:
I. What happened?
II. How do I prevent it from happening again? (because although it was interesting I am NOT looking forward to going through that ever again)

Curious, yeah o.o All I have to offer at first glance here is a theory:

Most people, when suffering from any degree of pain, feel the need for others' support, the need to share that pain. If we assume some people, sometimes, let out empathic "broadcasts" as they're called, when that happens, even if it's a subconscious, instinctive thing, nearby empaths would receive those signals and could, in some cases, feel the pain. Theoretically, a broadcast is received by everyone, empath or not, but they're usually not as precise and strong signals as one with a specific destination, so those without empathic training (or natural affinity for it, you tell me) wouldn't receive such a subtle signal, even more so if it's subconsciously sent out.

You said your friend was cutting, right? Those who do that usually need to share their pain even more so than others, depending on their reason for cutting... As for your professor's case, she was most likely asked to "open up" and such before the healing began, right? That could've caused the broadcasts, since it was an isolated case and from what I understand you've never felt any such pain around her, right?

If I'm guessing this right (and I'm really just guessing here), there are two ways to stop it:

1. Learn to shield or get someone who can put up shields to shield you against those signals. Program the shield to work as a filter against those specific signals.
2. Learn to control yourself which signals you receive and which don't. If you learn to isolate yourself from those signals through empathic training, it should be easy from there.

All in all, unless you know someone who can shield you, you'd have to become a psion (if you're not one already, that is.)

I hate how everyone here has cool psychic/supernatural powers. It makes me feel left out *<:)

Hmm, I see. The thing that bothers me is I've had severe empath problems before and was almost sure my shield was alright. The one with my friend who cut did cause my shield to fall down due to shock but with my teacher I didn't feel my shield slip (because when it slips it also keeps me from inadvertently getting people's thoughts as well as emotions so usually if it breaks that's how I know). However, it could be because I'm so close to my professor that she might have slipped past it somehow....but the only one who's ever done that is my boyfriend. I thought the one guy might have been the key to it because he has abilities himself, and he tends to experiment in matters of which he shouldn't a lot but I don't know how that would work. Thank you though. At least I have somewhere to start. :)

Honestly, Raz, if you want some of it and the problems it brings, you can have it. Some days it's just not worth it, hon. :P

Yeah, maybe you're right, maybe it's because you're so close to your teacher. She was hurting and being helped out, so you might have subconsciously let it in or something. I dunno, I've never tried to stop empathy myself, it's always come in handy at some point in my life.

Then learn to use them yourself, Raz :P (It's pretty easy, really...)

I've had to shut them out to a degree lest I get migraines, panic attacks or worse. Even then things seep through. I don't block everything out, I just keep it at a more manageable level. You are right, a little bit is helpful, too much is not. :)

Hahah, I wouldn't know, I never tried to improve it :P So I just have my basic ability I developed when I was little. Not enough to be a problem, just enough to know how most people feel at will.

At the very least it'll give me something to do with my free time. Self love-gratification isn't fun anymore.
