I recently got seasons 1 and 2 on DVD.  It's better than I remembered, perhaps because these are uncut episodes.  In their full hour length.
I was interested to see that they didn't have the comedy shorts during season one.  These were introduced during the second season.  The pilot film was included in the season one collection.  In that one, the portraits were actually used in the stories.  In the series the portraits never appeared in any of the tales.

A pretty good series, not up there with Twilight Zone, but good and some nice Rod Serling stories as well.

Great find quest

It's nice to see it in it's original form and uncut.  Also good to see the evolution of the series.

Season 1 was only six episodes.  It ran as part of a series called "Four in One".  There were no humorous shorts and it usually featured two segments, one long and one shorter.

Season two ran about 22 episodes.  That was the year they started the funny short "blackouts", which only ran a few minutes in length.  Some episodes had as many as four stories.

Season 3 hasn't been released yet, but that year it ran 15 episodes and was only a half hour in length.  No humorous shorts and only one story per episode.

It suffered when NBC moved it to Sunday nights.  It originally ran Wednesdays at 10pm.  Following the NBC Mystery Movie.  However, the third year NBC opted to move their Mystery Movie to Sundays.  Sundays was a bit different for the networks then.  Normally they broadcasted from 8-11pm weeknights and Saturdays.  On Sundays, however, they opted to broadcast from 7:30-10:30pm.  NBC Did this to keep their "World of Disney" on from 7:30-8:30 as it had been running.  So they decided to move the Mystery Movie/Night Gallery combination to Sundays.  However, with Disney running 7:30-8:30, this left only two hours on Sundays.  Mystery Movie running ninty minutes, Night Gallery ended up being cut to half length and ending at 10:30pm.  Additionally, NBC decided to expand some episodes of Mystery Movie to two hours, bumping Night Gallery.  Hence, NBC didn't need a full season anyway of the series. 

By Mid-Season NBC decided to cancell Night Gallery and just fill in with two hour Mystery Movies.
