Title: leprechauns ?
Post by: Vendoh on March 12, 2007, 11:07:49 AM
I figured this would be the best place to ask... what is the real story behind these mischievious members of the fey?

Oh ho! Great question!

Leprechaun is the shoe maker of the fairy people and also their banker. He looks like an old man wearing green and red with a pointed hat which he spins around on. On his jacket he wears seven buttons on each side.

Though he is very rich he never spends any of it which makes him look poor. Though all Irishmen know him by sight and grab him quick and hold tight so he can't escape. He'll lead them to his pot of gold (which isn't always at the end of a rainbow.) but humans must be wary for if you take your eye of him he'll disappear. If you do manage to get his gold it is likely to turn to rubbish in the morning because it is fairy treasure and won't be any use by the end of the day.

Any other questions? I know most of the popular Irish Fairies by heart.

Well that kind of blows the wind out of my sails... I was hoping they would be like the horror movie version. You know murderous, and vengeful....

Well they can be vengeful, but not murderous. I havn't really heard of fairies killing besides the Far Liath. And David, where did you hear they were extinct? No fairies are extinct there are just fewer of them on earth because some have left to the Otherworlds, or banished by relgious figures like St. Patrick....

I use to like Patrick untill I heard he called all fairies demons, banished them, made people stop believing in them, crushed fairy holy sights with sledge hammers, and he isn't even a saint no Pope has canonized him so is unofficial but people just call him one! I don't celebrate St Patricks Day at his death date, but rather as Irish pride and celebrate the fairies.

he was a bit of a ponce wasent he. thats cool thats the way i celebrate it to. he banished many things from that beautiful isle and that just causes many problems for believers.

Though he did do good and got the people from terrible practices such as the worship of Crom Cruach. He was evil.

I do hate steriotypes for fairies. The Leprechaun is a prime example, he never wore all green, and didn't wear shamrocks on his hat. That is only so because Leprechauns are the prime fairy of Ireland, green is the color of Ireland, and 'Saint' Patrick used the shamrock as an example for the holy trinity. (Three in one.)

steriotypes are so wide spread through the magic world that its hard to seperate truth from useless babble.

I don't mind some of them on fairy's though. They give people happy thoughts and good things to dream about.

When ever they enter my dreams it is hardly ever good. They normally cause me mental stress.

some are good some are bad. its all in how you look at it. many things that seem bad to one person can be a god sent to another. sorry for your mental stress fay have that effect on people who are more open to the unknown.

Actaully whenever I have them in my dreams or see them I get so spaced out with amazement I can hardly concetrate for about an hour then I get stressed out. They are never the bad kind, I know the bad kind and you should never mess with them.
