Title: Dryads, Nymphs, Dwarves, Elves, Faeries, Leprechauns, etc.
Post by: Daemonin on September 16, 2008, 06:28:13 AM
Discuss them here!  Describe what the differences are and what you know or have learned about them.

The topics are not limited to those in the title, so feel free to discuss all forms of fay and fay-like being.
Lore, location, appearance, personality, physical attributes, and anything else can be said.  And just to get started:

Leprechauns are Irish fay known for their gold and good luck on St. Patrick's Day.

Nymphs are common in Greek mythology.

Dryads are tree fae.

Dwarves are primarily Germanic fae that are short and bearded and drink lots of mead :-D

Elves are nimble and have been portrayed in many ways.  Tall and slender with agility like no other to the short Keebler elves that make cookies.

Faeries of all kind are seen as looking many different ways, from those with human-childlike features to the more seducing kind.

I may be right, I may be wrong.  Correct or enlighten me if you will :-)

Dwarves are not Germanic, unless you count Nordic in the generalization of all Germanic Lore.

Dryads are bound to their trees, and live as long as they do, a dryad bound to a Redwood would live awhile, 0_0.

Leprechauns are good luck any day, because they give gold to those with no greed in their hearts.

I'm frightened-deathly frightened of Gnomes. I've been petrified of them since my childhood-but I love faeries. I know Gnomes seem harmless but I fear them. It's so stupid, I know. I'm just wondering what more Gnomes actually entail? If they're known for evil or good? I'm assuming good in the opinions of others-but for me I think they're evil. Faeries though are beautiful and sweet and give me a sense of relaxation when I see a picture or drawing of one. I don't understand why I'm so fearful of stupid Gnomes!

dont let fae fool you fae, elves, trolls, gnomes, and dwarves all have varying unique personalities they can be good or bad any of them.

Gnomes are typically depicted as earth elemental spirits that are custodians of the earth. As far as my admittedly limited knowlede extends, there is little to suggest that they are beings with a fearsome reputation

Are dragons part of the fae category? :?

Or are they different completely? & what about orcs? Are they a modern day fictional thing, or do they come from legends & myths as well? :?

when i say fae i mean generally things that can travel from realm to realm and are not human, but dragons are not fae they are creatures with high degrees of magical power where as orcs i would have to check on because until the ehole lord of the ringd i think most people would have just called the modern idea of orcs trolls.

The idea of an orc as most people know it comes from J. R. R. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings series, and all of the myriad media that have been inspired by it.
The word "orc" originally meant a generic ogre/demon/undead creature in Celtic, Germanic, and Nordic myths.

Ive met brownies before a couple of dryad's and once a water sprite, a spirit, and several ghosts but as far as the fey have told me there are trolls, several magical creatures dragons and the like, elemental's, djinn and elves although Ive never heard mention of dwarfs.
Title: Re: Dryads, Nymphs, Dwarves, Elves, Faeries, Leprechauns, etc.
Post by: Regina Terra on November 07, 2008, 04:14:24 PM
I sorta think dwarfs & elves were originally the same thing. The only difference were that dwarfs lived in mountainous regions. So modern day writers decided to make them different.

I think I spelled "dwarfs" wrong, but stupid spellcheck keeps telling me that is how it's supposed to be. >.<
Title: Re: Dryads, Nymphs, Dwarves, Elves, Faeries, Leprechauns, etc.
Post by: Mr. Kreepy on November 07, 2008, 04:28:31 PM
Nope, you spelled dwarfs right. J.R.R. Tolkein used the spelling "dwarves" in his stories, to seperate his race of mortal creatures from the beings of myth. This spelling has entered popular usage because of the popularity of the Lord of the Rings series, but the former is the correct one.
As for dwarfs and nymphs being the same thing...Many ancient mythologies drew no clear distinction between the many beings of Faerie that we recognize today. The vast majority of the legends concerning faeries come from Celto-Germanic and Nordic myth, and both of those consider dwarves as a type of faerie, and sometimes even consider dwarfs the same thing as elfs.
Title: Re: Dryads, Nymphs, Dwarves, Elves, Faeries, Leprechauns, etc.
Post by: Regina Terra on November 07, 2008, 04:32:30 PM
So basically they are all the same type of things, just with certain specialties of magic? :?
Title: Re: Dryads, Nymphs, Dwarves, Elves, Faeries, Leprechauns, etc.
Post by: Mr. Kreepy on November 07, 2008, 10:44:24 PM
Yes, there is a little bit of that, but more than anything it's because the words "dwarf", "elf", "fairy", etc. are all particularly ambiguous, and they aren't the words originally used by the cultures that invented those concepts. Also, though in this day and age coherent information is more possible because of the internet, but back then two neighboring tribes might have completely different words for the exact same thing, thus leading to confusion as to what was what.
There is quite a bit of evidence to suggest that fairies/dwarfs/elfs/etc. are all diminutized versions of ancient European nature Gods, that were reduced to the status of minor nature spirits when more anthropomorphic Gods began to be worshipped by the pagan tribes.

Title: Re: Dryads, Nymphs, Dwarves, Elves, Faeries, Leprechauns, etc.
Post by: Regina Terra on November 08, 2008, 12:04:33 PM
That question was asked a while back.

Basically:

1. It depends on the exact region you are getting your info from.

& 2. some of the Fae can choose to appear as whatever you wish, so if you have a pre-set idea of what they should be, then they will appear as that.

Honey, it's cold iron. It's the Fae version of silver to vampire & werewolves. Simple, everyday, bullets from everyday guns should kill them.

However, the best way to protect yourself, is to cary a piece of it on yourself, or have it around your house. That way you don't need to kill them, they'll stay away on their own.

Soil yourself with pure terror since the fey can be extremely vicious when their rage is provoked. If folklore has anything to say on the matter, it would suck to be you if you ever were foolish enough to piss one off.

Angels are beings that are the direct creation of Judaic theologians while '' the fey'' is a generic term employed to describe various minor spirits that were venerated in Europe throughout the ages prior to the arrival of Christianity. Any comparision between these two starkly opposing sets of entities can be attributed entirely to the endeavours of mediavel Christian theologians who were determined to cast Europe's aboriginal deities and spirit beings in a negative light.

As far as I know, they are what I like to call remnants.

They come from an age where humanity was very young, some think they are the watered down myths & legends of ancient gods, others that they are spirit entities of the elements & life.

In any case, in my personal opinion, they are a mere shadow of whatever they truly once where, either gods, or powerful spiritual beings.

Brownies are small usually nude or scadly clothed earth fairys that can serve as an attendant to a home famil or person performing chores and notifying there master kind of like a familiar although have a weird social system in witch gifts and payments are considered grave insults and have some reverse magical connotations

You're both wrong. The name "brownie" for the spirits comes from the English pronunciation of the Gaelic word "brùnaidh".
The brownie dessert is named because of the color.

Simple as that.

"Imp" is just a generic term for a small, mischievous otherwordly thing. Demon, fairy, familiar spirit, whatever. Kind of like "gremlin" and "goblin".

now in my experience imps are specifically more keyed down than fairy's or more substantial than a fairy and despite all the beauty of the fae good and bad imps have shown me very ugly angular and crude faces with lack of properly formed bofyparts
Title: Re: Dryads, Nymphs, Dwarves, Elves, Faeries, Leprechauns, etc.
Post by: Mr. Kreepy on November 29, 2008, 03:23:31 AM
I'm going to say it again. There is no such thing as an "Imp". The only recorded instanced of imps in any folklore is medieval texts on witches written from a heavily Christian point of view and alchemical texts, which are less than reliable. It's just a generic name for a small and mischievous spirit, similar to "Goblin" (which came from the Old Germanic word "kobold", which were malicious dwarfs)

If I may ask, Levin, how much knowledge do you actually have concerning the spirits from ancient myths that have recently been called by the name "Fae"?

Dude, he's SEEN them. I think that's a lot more experience than some texts or myths.

Are you aware of the nature of Fae?
They think of humans the way we think of animals. No, they think less of us. They will trick and harm humans simply for laughs. The reason I tell him that "imps" are purely a human construct is because if something is appearing to him under the guise of an imp, I think he should really watch his back.
As for his experiences, I refuse to simply take his word for it. As I have found some credibility in claims of the existence of spirit beings I will give him some credit, but you can't expect me to believe based on testamonial alone. Even If he's not lying or insane, the human mind is so strange and complex that it can easily be tricked in its perception of reality.

I just realised something. You are basically saying a certain type of Fae isn't real. This MIGHT be true, and it MIGHT piss them off (since you can't honestly talk about Fae and believe that they will just ignore you like some mild mannered school girl) to the point where they will personally pay you a visit.

Yeah, good luck with that Kreepy.

Heres my opinions on this matter:

Elves & Dwarves are from Norse Mythology, which was one of the writer of LOTRs whose name I am too lazy to type's influence,

Dwarves were created from the maggots from the flesh of Ymir when Odin & his brothers killed him and made the world, and lived in the underground of Nioavellir, one of the 9 worlds connected by Yggdrasil, and were not described as short until the 13th century (aka 1200s, aka over a thousand years since the you know what), were said to have pale skin and black hair, and were responsible for making most of the god's artifacts like Thor's hammer, Odin's Spear and even Sif's Hair,

Belief in Elves was common among all Germanic Tribes which included the Norse, the were described as human size but incredibally handsome, and important figures could become Elves after Death, they live in Alfheimr which lies in the sky, Alfheimr was ruled by a king, one of which was named Gandalf, the source of the name for the LOTR character,

The modern fantasy Elf & Dwarf are nearly completely based off the LOTR books.

Trolls were also from Norse mythology but occur much later, taking the parts traditionally reserved for other norse creatures including the dwarf and the ice giant (the true name of which is hard to spell so I shall not) they are described as being incredibally ugly (true in modern fantasy) and as being turned to stone by the suns rays (Not true in modern fantasy yet occurs in the Hobbit)

Like has been stated Dryads & Nymphs are Greek in origin Dryads are technically the Nymphs of Oak trees but generally refer to all tree Nymphs, and as a matter of fact do NOT die when their tree is cut down, those are Hamadryads, a subrace, Nymphs are really any female  mythological creature tied to a certain feature of the land, Naiad is the proper term for a nymph of water, there are nymphs of water, trees, valleys, clouds, and even the underworld.

Leprechauns are just basic male faerie folk known for being shoemakers other then that I'd say modern fiction is pretty accurate (though truth be told English & Celtic mythology aren't my strong point) though I doubt they are as hmmm. . . mascotty? as in modern interpretation. . .

Faeries or Faerie Folk covers a wide range of mythological creatures primarily from Europe, sort of like a Phylum in scientific classification,

Brownies are small creatures that do not like to be seen, they tend to come out at night to help with work in exchange for small gifts or food like porridge or honey but will tend to leave if the gifts are called payment as that implies a type of master / servent (okay, employer / employee is more acurate but master / servent sounds better) they tend not to talk to people but are quite sociable among their own kind, and I believe offending them some times causes them to turn into a boggart though I can't seem to find the site I learned this from. . .

With the increase in communication the lines between them blurred and they have been predominately groupped in one category due to certain similar charateristics as this thread gives evidence to. . .

You know one of my peeves is when a person (Tolkein in this case) interprets a certain creature in a certain way then the rest of the world takes that as being true without even looking at where that person got their interpretation from, not that it's that person's fault, mainly it the mindless mass we know as human society. . .

For example the Hobgoblin, in modern fantasy it's considered a bigger badder version of the goblin (again partially Tolkein's fault but he tried to fix it so no fault of his) but in actuality it was a smaller and NICE version of the Goblin. . .

Hmmmmm. . . I hope that made sense . . .

IN SUMMARY: The only person who knows what is the true form of something is the person that created it (NOTE: don't take the litterally, okay, don't go looking for some wise and deeper meaing just don't take it as it's litterally written)

And now I have run out of steam so I will push the Post button before this degrades any futher into an incomprehensible pile of gunk. . .

In Forgotten Realms, and a lot of other modern day works, Trolls are described as kinda dog headed, and can reproduce much like a-sexual plants. Where as if you chop off an arm or leg, they will regenerate, so you have TWO trolls where you once had one. Although they still retain separate genders and can mate to give birth.

Is any of that even true? Or is it pure hogwash? :?

In Norse mythology, they are nowhere near as dim witted as modern fantasy portrays them to be. Instead of being gigantic hulking brutes which are only dimly sentient, trolls in Norse myth are the relations of the dwarves and like their kindred, dwell in fairly advanced socities ruled by kings. Although extremely hideous, they could be shrewd and cunning.

Trolls are more common in slavic lands and old places of the world. They are not any stupider than your average human, have thier own language or often speak the local one, theyre average of 9 or ten feet tall. Love meat, people cows horses goats it doesnt faze them. They are actually very good at stone masonry and are ill tempered at the best of times. The only diffrence is Japanses Oni who are very smart trolls indeed but not related to thier European counterparts.  They are very hard to kill and have thick skin. The only way I managed to kill on in Bosnia was to stab its eyes out and cut its throat. Then I burnt it to make sure. Thankfully due to me and my kins efforts there are very few left.

So… basically you killed a sentient being whose only offense to you was its very existence? Again, how mighty white of you… You remind me of the Klan and other various hate groups. In fact, your reasoning and logic behind your actions is very much like theirs.

This being the case, I have to assume that…

A) You were born –and raised in – a shack in some god-forsaken backwoods hicktown in West Virginia (My deepest apologies to all members from this area… I don’t intend to make you look bad.) and at some point was moved to the Deep South, where your uncle introduced you to the family secret… and then to the Klan or Aryan Nation or some other group of morons.

OR

B) There is no danger of you reproducing because you’re too lost in WOW to find a real girlfriend.

Whichever is the case, it doesn’t matter – you lose.
