This article is rather interesting since it directly pertains to the medieval belief that vampires were purveyors of plague. Due to ignorance about the decomposition of the human body, disintegrating corpses which secreted a reddish fluid reminiscent of blood, were deemed were vampires. In order to prevent the vampire from continuing to claim more victims, its mouth was stuffed with bricks or stones. Interestingly enough this belief has parallels in south-east Asia where native reverents similarly have objects placed in their mouths.
